Coira couldn’t believe that she had New Year’s Eve off. She had spent the last few days checking, double checking, and triple checking with the GM at The Howling Pint that she and her bandmates wouldn’t be needed on the busiest nights of the year.

“Okay.” She texted back. “I’ll have my phone on me no matter what, if you need me.”

She looked around her studio apartment. Waving her wand she watched her guitar cases close and her songsheets fly back into her portfolio. It felt odd. She didn’t need the extra gig tonight but she didn’t quite know what to do with herself.

She picked up her phone again, scrolling through her contacts. She knew better than to check in with Maria, with the break-up it would be better to give her oldest friend the space she needed. Opening up Winstagram she noticed an announcement from the Victory Bar Account: “Sing in the New Year with Karaoke. A Champagne Toast to follow as we ring in 2027!”

“Hmm.” She mused before popping into her starred contacts. “Feel like karaoke and a little bit more intimate atmosphere?” She hit send, watching the message join her messages to Chet. He’d been incredible with her lifestyle and had somehow helped her push out of her own insecurities. They were still there but they weren’t as pronounced. She watched as he replied “Sure.”

She tore into her closet, gods it was a wreck but she managed to pull a small fit and flare pink dress out. Paired with a pair of black tights she did a spin in the mirror, a smile on her face as the dress spun with her. “I’ll meet you there.” She texted Chet before disappearing on the spot.

—
Victory Road was packed from one side of the lane to the other when she finally made it into Victory Bar she was surprised she could move. Looking over the crowd she spotted Chet, leaning on the bar across from Rachel Davies. She glided through the bar toward the bar sliding a hand around his neck and landing a cheek on his cheek, “Happy New Year, darling.

He looked absolutely classic. A dark blue suit with a black button down unbuttoned to reveal his neck. He smiled and said, “Happy New Year.” His blue eyes gleaming down at her. Coira couldn’t stop herself from smiling. “What can I get you to drink?”

Coira stopped herself from asking to drink champagne all night. “Gin Fizz.” She let herself melt into his arms. “I was thinking, I’d sing for you.” She watched his smile grow. It was different from one of her shows. She had to perform for the masses but here it was different. Here if she wanted she could zero in on Chet and sing just to him. “Thoughts?” She watched him nod back.

“Thanks, Rach.” Coira said, picking up her cocktail and making her way over to the karaoke booth. Thumbing through the catalogue she looked at the wizard manning the station, “Do you have anything by Kelly Clarkson?” The wizard nodded and ran a search. “That one.” She said finding a favorite halfway down the list.

“Name?” He asked, placing the song into the queue.

“Coira.” She replied.

He nodded, turning down the house music. “Ladies and gentlemen please welcome, Coira.”

The crowd went silent followed by a growing cheer for those that recognized her from her gigs. She took a deep breath, as the intro to the song started and when she opened her eyes she looked only at Chet. Her emotion grew as the song went into full swing. Swaying with the music she saw the look of absolute contentment on Chet’s face. He loved to see her perform and had reminded her about it often over the months. And as she hit the high notes it was as if she was sending him to heaven and back.

The track faded out and she thanked the wizard before heading back to the bar landing a kiss on him. This time on his lips. “What did you think?”

“It was wonderful. Thank you.” He kissed her back.

“If you ever want a private concert, all you need to do is ask.” Coira scrunched her face and sipped at her drink.

“I know.” He responded in turn. “I might take you up on that some time in the new year.”

Coira had been holding back on saying it for months and she felt that familiar feeling building in her chest. “I love you, Chet.”

Chet's chest seized as tight panic took over when she said that. Why would she say that? They'd hardly been dating six months... it was just... a lot.

He knew he couldn't say it back yet, but he knew he couldn't have that sort of conversation here in the middle of the party. Instead, he kissed her fiercely, holding her whole body close to him. After he broke the kiss, he continued to hold her tightly and leaned down to say in her ear, "I know," and then pulled back to flash her a cheeky grin. He didn't know where his response had come from, and he knew this would need to be a discussion at some point between them, but he knew most of all that he wanted to spend the night with his arms wrapped around the first person in this world to make him happy in nearly two years - the first who hadn't judged his sullen ways, his burying his grief, his strange lifestyle. The beautiful - nay, gorgeous - rock star who somehow loved him. He knew it might be an impetuous, spontaneous use of the word on her part, but part of him simply felt that she really believed it either way.

So he did just that - staring into her beautiful eyes, holding her close, kissing her with abandon at midnight, and then he took her home with him and spent the whole rest of the night wishing her a very, very happy new year, indeed.
