They stood on the platform at the train station, waiting for the train to pull up. Gus clutched a duffel bag in his left hand and tried to straighten his cap with the other. Casper was huddled into himself because of the deep chill in the air, there was also a light fog that rolled across their feet.
The station was busy that evening, due to all the men leaving off to war. Some were with their wives and kids, ready to say their goodbyes in a flurry of tears or girlfriends clutched tightly in their arms. Gus and Casper could only stand side-by-side and wait for the train to come. Seeing Casper shiver from the cold, Gus, wished he was able to put his arms around Casper so he could reassure him, but with all the people surrounding them it was in vain.
A loud whistle was soon heard through the silence, signifying the trains arrival. People started to crowd around the train and say goodbye to their boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. Gus sighed and turned to Casper with a sad smile on his face. He then extended his hand out towards Casper in a formal farewell, Casper stared at the hand with a quizzical expression on his face.
“Better get going, don’t want the train to miss me.” Casper continued to stare at the hand for a few minutes and soon sighed, taking the hand in his and shaking lightly.
“Yeah don’t want to miss the train,” Casper said, trying his best not to start crying in front of the crowd. Gus shook Casper’s hand in return and gave a slight smile before walking away. Casper watched him go and sighed, wiping tears from his eyes.
Gus was slowly walking towards the train, but stopped suddenly when he felt a small pain shoot up his back. He turned his head slightly to see Casper smiling at him while wiping tears from his eyes. At that moment Gus knew something was missing, that something wasn’t right. Gus usually kept control on his impulses, but this time seeing Casper’s pain was too much for him and he found himself running back towards Casper. He then grabbed Casper’s shoulders and kissed him on the mouth hungrily, holding onto Casper as if he was a life preserver keeping him afloat.
Surprised by the force of the kiss, Casper, could only stand in Gus’s arms with his eyes wide open. When Gus pulled away, Casper, swung back on his heels ever so slightly. Gus smiled a cheeky grin and gave Casper’s cheeks on last peck before pulling away completely.
“Gus, what if somebody saw?” Casper asked in a high-pitched voice. Gus gave a wave of his hand in response.
“Everyone’s probably to busy saying goodbye and crying to notice. I just needed to kiss you, to feel the taste of your lips, one last time.” Casper stared at Gus for awhile then he was soon smiling, his slightly flushed cheeks growing even redder.
“I’ll miss you,” Casper said, his smile starting to fade just as fast as it had appeared. Gus nodded his head and gave Casper one last kiss.
“I’ll miss you too, write me?” Gus asked in an uncertain voice. When Casper said he would, Gus, grabbed the duffel bag he had dropped by his feet in the run and walked away, waving back to Casper and smiling. Casper waved goodbye back, wishing that he could just stop the tears that flowed down his all ready wet and cold cheeks.
Gus was soon on the train and pulling a bruised book from his duffel bag to read on the way, returning to waving his goodbyes. The train pulled away from the station and moved on with a whooping whistle. Kids ran and continued to wave towards their fathers until the train was out of sight.
People soon started to move off of the platform and away from the station, making sure to collect their children along the way. Casper stood in the middle of the platform when almost everyone was gone, staring straight ahead from where the train used to be, still waving. He was soon snapped out of his daze and laughed embarrassingly as he put down his hand.
Casper then turned around and walked away from the train station, ready for the long journey ahead.
