The six year old’s cry ran out over the shelves of the department store. Dean rolled his eyes and hung on to Aaron as Sam tried to console Desi.
“Sweetheart, the vampire costume is too big for you. And look: doesn’t this princess costume look much better?”
“No!” Desi’s lower lip jutted out and she stomped her foot, glaring at her younger father. “I wanna be the vampire, Daddy.”
Looking over at his husband pleadingly, Sam sighed. “Alright, sweetie, your brother needs his juice. Talk to Papa about it, okay?” Taking the four year old from Dean’s arms, Sam dodged a glare from his brother.
“Don’t call me Papa,” he groaned, handing the boy to Sam. “And why do I always have to deal with the tantrums?”
“Why don’t you explain to her the real reason?” Sam grinned as he tore off, child and unicorn costume in hand. Taking a moment, to contemplate why the hell they were dressing their four year old son up as a unicorn, Dean shook his head and crouched down to Desi.
“Desiree, what do you want to be for Halloween?” he asked, holding up the adult vampire costume and the child-sized princess dress.
“That one,” the girl replied, thrusting her hand towards the adult robe.
“But that’s too big for you.”
Desi’s eyes narrowed. “Daddy already told me that, and I don’t care. I wanna be a VAMPIRE!” Dean could tell that this was escalating into a full-blown tantrum. Taking the child by her arms, he lowered his voice to a whisper.
“Desiree, your daddy doesn’t want you to be a vampire for Halloween because he killed a big, scary man named Gordon who was a vampire. So we’re going to buy the pretty princess costume, okay?”
Dean knew he had made a mistake when he saw the six year old’s eyes fill up and her lip begin to wobble. Swooping her into a hug, he grabbed the vampire costume. “Okay, honey, you can be a vampire,” he said in resign as he headed towards the checkout.

“Nice job convincing her to be a princess,” Sam muttered as he watched the kids walk up the driveway to another house.
“Don’t you remember how you were at that age?” Dean whispered back, pasting a smile on his face for his children gazing lovingly down at them.
Sam groaned. “Yes, and I’m trying to forget it.” When pumpkin-clad Aaron reached the bottom of the driveway, sister in two behind him, he slipped his child-sized hand into Sam’s. Looking up at him with blue eyes filled with adoration, he smiled a gap-toothed grin.
“Daddy, did you weally kiw a vampiwe?”
Smiling weakly at the child, Sam shot a death glare at Dean.
“Happy Halloween,” Dean shrugged, an apologetic smile spreading across his face.
