Gawain mingled easily with the crowd at Arthur's court, courteously exchanging words with everyone who crossed his path and if one knew how to watch him, it became clear that if he hadn't been a great fighter, he could have been Arthur's eyes and ears at court with equal success. Not that anyone believed Arthur used spies. Still, by the time the evening had passed, Gawain had heard almost all the interesting gossip and learned a few things that weren't public knowledge yet.
Arthur himself was a diplomat by nature, able to manage vastly different groups of people with words and only rarely resorting to force. It often seemed that he knew the intimate secrets of the lives of the members of his court, from the best knights and lords down to the ladies' pages. Usually because he did. Discussions of courtiers, their lives and their intrigues passed for pillow talk when he and Gawain were together, and only partly because their meetings were theoretically justified by the fact that Gawain was his heir. In between kisses and caresses, the two men murmured their thoughts on managing tetchy knights and their ladies, where to intervene and when to remain silent. Each carefully judged manipulation fueled their desire, each carefully planned maneuver led to deeper kisses until political fervor led to other kinds of passion. And afterward, they spoke of courtiers, their live and their intrigues, of tetchy knights and their ladies.
