1986
It was late and he knew he shouldn't be out. There were a number of bad people out there, he had never met any, but his mom always said they were there. So, it reasoned, as his father liked to say, there had to be bad people out there. He was very certain none of them would find him if he walked fast enough.
Ahead, an alley cat crossed under a street lamp, pausing midway to look behind it and sniff the air. Ianto watched it as he hurried down the side walk. They were both heading towards the park down the block. When the cat spotted him, it took off back in to the hedge row it came from.
Crossing the street, Ianto looked both ways quickly. It wasn't for any reason except his mother always made sure he did it. There would be no cars on this street, there never were. It was hardly a street any more, all broken bricks and scraggly patches of grass.
He was right where he remembered last seeing it. Mother had said his brother had dropped it not far from the park. Pulling his flashlight from his back pocket, he began to search under the hedges. The weeds were so thick, he had to bend down and inspect in several spots.
Ianto was bent over to feel in a clump of grass when a warm gust of wind blew over him. The next second he was blown in to the shrubs as the world exploded in a cacophony of light and noise. He barely had time to react before a hellish rain of flaming debris came down around him.
The bulk of the falling remains crashed to the park, leaving a blazing trail behind it the length of the sky. Moments later, another blast wave, this one much stronger than the first, flattened everything within the park and surrounding area. Caught in this wave, Ianto was buried under the billowing limbs from the bushes.
Minutes, that felt like hours, later, running footsteps echoed down the old street. Knowing it was someone come to inspect the wreck, Ianto tried to move. His right arm was fine, but when he tried to use his left elbow to sit up, he cried out in pain. The lower part of his arm was wrong, but he was in too much pain to figure out how.
Hearing the cry, the owner of the footsteps came to a halt. They came near, stopping at the curb. When Ianto whimpered, the figure hurriedly went to inspect the rubble. He dug quickly, carefully removing large chunks before pulling away the dead bushes.
The first sight of the stranger, Ianto forgot all his Mother and Father's words of caution. The man was knelt down in front of him with his arms out and that was all that mattered. Wrapping his good arm around the stranger's neck, he sniffed. "My arm hurts."
"You're not crying." His tone was light, almost shocked. "Are you a very brave boy?"
Ianto nodded.
"Well, then, this might hurt a little. But since you are brave and strong, you are going to get through this. All right, here goes!" Wrapping his arms around Ianto, the stranger gently pulled the boy from the rubble and debris. He brought his brown coat up to protect them from another gust of wind. Climbing to his feet, he cradled Ianto's injured arm to his chest. "You're doing a great job, Ianto, just hang on a little while longer."
Nodding once more, Ianto buried his now tear streaked face in the stranger's neck. There was something almost soothing about him that put the pain at a distance. Ianto felt his eyes start to close. They shot open once more when the man shook him.
"Don't go falling a sleep, you've got some nasty injuries that need tending too." He shifted Ianto higher up in his hold. The movement jarred Ianto's arm, causing the boy to cry out. He shushed him with a press of his lips to Ianto's temple. "Sorry, Ianto, I didn't mean to hurt you."
"Okay." But he was in too much pain to make the word sound any where near brave enough for the strange man. Ianto clutched at the man when his weight was shifted again.
"It's okay, I'm only setting you down." With greater care, he eased Ianto down. The man had to reach up over his shoulder to untangle the boy's fingers from his collar. As he pulled back from the boy, he chucked him under the chin. "Don't worry, Ianto, you'll be fine."
Ianto didn't want him to go. He reached out with the intention of stopping him, catching the stranger's coat pocket as he stood up. "Please, don't go! Don't go."
With a hesitant smile, he removed Ianto's from his pocket. Cupping it between his own, he patted the tiny hand. "You're safe now."
"I don't want you to leave." He couldn't explain why, but once the stranger let go, he would be all alone. There would be no one for there for him again. "Please, stay."
"Doctor, we have to go!"
The stranger glanced over his shoulder. An impatient blonde woman was watching him from down the lane. When he looked back at Ianto, he pressed his open hand to Ianto's cheek. "You'll be fine."
The moment it made contact, Ianto felt as if a warm blanket was wrapped around him. All the world went away, taking with it everything that was bad and mean. Raising his eyes, he blinked at the comforting man. "Will you come back for me?"
A smile graced the stranger's face. "Certainly." And with that, he was gone.
Ianto couldn't remember the strange man walking away, or the blonde haired woman with the strange accent. There, left behind in his mind, was the feeling of promised peace. He said he would come back, and so, he would wait.
