Series: Harry Potter

Warning(s): None
Summary: At Christmas time, Hermione gives Draco a baby's rattle as a gift.

Disclaimer: If only I were J.K. Rowling...
Author's Notes: This story is an old one and I was sorting through older stories when I had come across it. I do believe that it will fit the prompt just nicely. :D
With evening giving into the pre - dawn hours, the occupants of Malfoy Manor were none too surprised to find a fresh layer of virgin, white snow had blanketed over the rolling hills of the manor grounds. The sun was trying in vain to melt away the clouds and allow it's golden rays to fall upon the snow - covered grounds, but the grey clouds had held together tightly, refusing to budge an inch to allow the sun to melt away what they had given the earth.
Inside the quiet residence, Lucius Malfoy settled himself at the head of the table with his wife to his left and Draco to his right. Across from Draco sat Hermione Granger - Malfoy, whom seemed to be seeped in conversation with his wife, Narcissa. The two of them had been whispering since the moment he and Draco had entered the breakfast room and shooting small conspiratory glances between the two of them. It was odd to see such an interaction between his wife and his muggleborn daughter - in- law.
Long ago, Draco would have been killed for daring to fall in love with such filth. Lucius would have not resorted entirely to killing his heir and successor, but rather to obliviating his mind of any images of the filth he seemed so intent on continuing a relationship with.
He still did not understand the attraction between his son and Potter's brain. He had always thought Pansy would be the next Lady Malfoy, seeing as she always seemed to be a permanent fixture at the Manor during the Winter and Summer holidays; but somewhere along the way, Draco's affections had turned away from Pansy and towards the one - third of the Golden Trio.
"Happy Christmas, darling," Narcissa's warm greeting cut through his reverie.
"Happy Christmas, Lucius," Hermione acknowledged, reaching for another warm biscuit from the basket.
"Happy Christmas, Father," Draco said inclining his head in a nod towards his father.
"Happy Christmas," Lucius returned, picking up his fork.
Breakfast had gone off as a silent affair with only Narcissa and Hermione continued whispered conversing. He had tried numerous times to listen to what the women had been discussing, but their voices were far too low to make out a thing. It was during this course of action that he wished more than anything to have extendable ears. It would make it so much easier to understand what they were talking over.
Even Draco himself seemed to be quite interested in what his mother and wife were whispering about. He had caught Draco straining several times whenever mention of his name appeared in conversation.
As breakfast came to a close, the two couples rose from their chairs and exited the Breakfast room and poured out into the spacious hall. Lucius and Draco escorted their respected wives towards the large wooden double doors that lead to the Family room.
At Draco's side, Hermione seemed nervous and excited all together as Lucius drew open one of the doors and stepped to the side to allow the three of them to enter. Inside the room, a large Christmas tree was nestled in the corner of the room overlooking a large bay window.
On it's branches were Malfoy Family ornaments dating back to the very first arrival of the Malfoys upon English soil. Each one decorated with a Malfoy's name, date of birth, and date of death. It had been a family tradition to celebrate always with the ancestors of the family and keep even their memories alive during the holiday season.
When Draco married Hermione a year ago, Narcissa Malfoy had seen to it that Hermione's ornament was created with her house crest design and resided next to Draco's whenever the tree when it up. It had been a wonderful gesture - in Hermione's opinion. She had truly felt as if she had become part of the Malfoy Family now. She had taken pride in it whenever she saw it and even proudly pointed it out whenever Harry and Ron came to visit the manor (which were rare occasions, in itself).
Moving to the tree, Narcissa knelt down and began rummaging through the gifts, handing each of them out according to the name printed neatly on the small piece of parchment attached.
The sound of paper wrapping tearing broke through the silence of the room as each member of the Malfoy Family had set about opening their gifts. Lucius was the first to finish, holding up his beloved Snake cane for all to see and turned his stunned gaze upon Hermione.
"How did you...?" He began but the words never quite finished falling from his lips.
"I went to the Ministry months ago and demanded that the cane be returned to you as it was a Malfoy Family heirloom and that they had no right to keep it," she announced quite proudly. "I had to argue over it, of course, but in the end, I managed to convince them that it should be returned to it's rightful owner."
Draco turned his grey eyes to his wife and lifted a fine, sculptured platinum brow at her. He was not sure what she meant by 'convince them', but he was sure he did not want to know. He could only surmise that the unfortunate wizard or witch were probably no longer working in the section of the Ministry.
"Thank you, Hermione," Lucius said finally. His voice filled with sincerity in his tone. It was the first time he had ever whispered such sincere words to another human being and he was quite sure he would be hearing it again sometime in the future.
It was not long before they all finished their unwrapping and setting their gifts to aside to converse freely in conversation as Hermione removed one more gift from behind her back and held it out for Draco.
"What's this?" inquired her husband.
"This is from me," came Hermione's soft answer.
Narcissa, whom had been privy to the knowlege already, scooted closer to her husband and waited for her son to unwrap the small box.
Taking the gift from Hermione's hand, Draco shook it and heard a small ringing inside. He looked again to Hermione, who only smiled and urged him to open it.
It was all he needed as he tore the wrapping paper off and opened the lid to find a baby's rattle nestled inside with white paper. Taking it out from the box, he eyed it for a moment and then smiled.
"I see how it is," he teased her. "You think I'm an overgrown kid who still needs alot of growing up to do."
Hermione chuckled softly at his words, but shook her head. "No," she answered nervously, "it's for your baby."
"My ba - "
The words died before they could further form the word as he looked at Hermione astonished. It was not the sort of revelation he had been expecting.
"We're going to have a baby?" He asked, dropping the rattle onto the carpet.
The nod of her head was all he needed to confirm her words as he rose and swept his wife off her feet and twirled her around the room. His parents remained seated; and waited for Draco to place Hermione back down on the ground before they too rose to their feet and congratulated the soon - to - be parents.
For the Malfoy Family, this news was indeed the best Christmas present they had ever been given.
