Just a thought...

Something to ponder.

We all know that LJ has an auto-payments option for people with paid accounts. You give them your credit card information, they keep it on file, and your paid account ends up being about five bucks cheaper a year. Right?

I don't have that feature set up on my LJ (my paid time doesn't run out until December, but then I'm letting my account lapse) but I know that there are plenty of people who do.

Which raises a very interesting question. If LJ permanently suspends/bans a person with a paid account that has auto-payments set up, can they, in theory, get money from that person indefinitely? Especially since the account won't have been deleted, only suspended, and the person has no way to go in and turn the auto-payments off?

I'm half-tempted to write a support ticket to LJ about this, and then I have to wonder if it would even really matter considering their utter lack of anything approaching good customer service, especially as of late.

Velcome

Figured with burr's fuck up last night it would be an appropriate time to toss out a welcome to any newcomers who are wandering over. There are a few useful asylums listed in the user info, and it occurs to me that I should probably find an exact copy of the guidelines for adult content and put them up as well, since Squeaky actually... you know, has a ToS. :P

So while I'm here, anyone have a copy to save me having to go dig it out? And if you can think of anything else that would be incredibly useful to have in the user info, tell me that as well. :)

Hello!

I wasn't going to move from LJ at first - the whole strikethrough didn't affect me much personally. However, now I heard that Ponderosa, one of my favorite fanartist, has been banned because of her art, I got thinking. I mean, I gave LJ credit last time for designing a mass deletion thing that affected more people than they'd anticipated, but this time the ban was way deliberate. So, I decided to get an account here, because who knows if whether someday some dude would report me for abuse and LJ would decide to actually follow thorough and ban me, too.

Oh, who am I. Right. Well, on LJ I was solitaryjane, or more known as the chick who runs around with Vincent/Cloud stuff a lot. Hi everyone!!! :-) Right now my journal here is only going to be something for my fics and for the asylums. I also run an IJ version of [info]30_kisses, with an alternate list and different dates and stuff. *shameless pimp* So yeah, hopefully here I'll have loads more fun and meet more people and not have to worry about what I post as much. Ciao!

From Pictishqueen over on Greatest Journal:

This post at Valleywag may be of interest. Six Apart's problems seem to go far deeper than mishandling fans. Live Journal founder Brad Fitzpatrick may be about to jump ship because of their problems and they may be looking for a buyer for the company. Apparently it's not only their users they wont communicate with.

Perhaps the most telling bit of this story is this comment

Six Apart is in two separate businesses -- selling blog software and services to big companies, and managing social networks LiveJournal and Vox. The two don't mesh well, and it shows. CEO Barak Berkowitz's corporate-running-dog background has not prepared him at all for dealing with feisty online users, and his ineptness was on display in the recent fan-fiction censorship scandal.

More at the link below. If it's of interest then please pass it around and digg it.

My Plans

Because a lot of people are discussing their plans with this whole deal, I've decided to put in my two cents over the matter.

Insanejournal appeals to me. Immensely. Almost more than GreatestJournal, but at the moment they're at about the same level.

As soon as NDK (the local con) is over, I will be saving money for my new laptop. The instant- The INSTANT I purchase that new computer, my next paycheck will be put toward a permanent account on Insanejournal.

This may take several months, but it is a realistic goal with priorities as they are. Until then, I will promote Insanejournal as much as possible. I will keep my journal both here and on Greatestjournal. And I will help get fandom grounded in both sites, so we can stay together even through the transitions that are occurring right now.

So let's all be friends with our fandoms. Let's go and bond together, and have a reason to stay on this site. Build your loyalties here, and never let Livejournal isolate us again.

Me, too.

I remember back when LJ started. I didn't sign up because I thought it was a Star Trek fan community (it's that little baldy guy that gave me that impression; don't ask why). Later on I learned it was a bloggish community, and a lot of fans were there because they felt they could freely express themselves without persecution there.

How things have changed.

I wasn't totally taken aback by the first strikethrough. That one was obviously a knee-jerk reaction by corporate big-heads. They made a mess and a messier cleanup. Very unprofessional for such a supposedly professional company. I've seen this kind of mess before in the corporation where I work when they were trying to impress another corporation to buy them out. Thankfully, the new corporation was far more professional and their cleanup efforts are finally paying off. I'm glad I stayed with them.

LiveJournal, on the other hand....

This second strikethrough bothers me because after just one post they simply suspend all accounts of the user...and disallow any further future accounts from that user! What? What ever happened to a fair warning? Were any of the members who were recently permanently suspended been in trouble before? It's one thing to be a repeat offender of policy, but a one-time offender? Is this what it's like in, say, heaven? "Oh, I'm sorry," says Saint Peter at the pearly gates. "You said 'Goddamn' once, and I'm afraid you can't go in. Dem's the rules." He points to the posted sign of the Ten Commandments and "Thou shalt not use God's name in vain," and boots you out of line to wander eternity.

I've got until November before my paid account runs out there, and since I only bought it for some userpics, the creation of polls to use with my community, and to do fancy stuff with my journal customisation, I won't cry in my milk over losing that functionality.

*heads over to LJ to turn off automatic payments*

WAVES!

Hi, been reading the "why I am here" and just had some thoughts.

In post 18685 http://blasphemy-blue.insanejournal.com/ commented 'and never let Livejournal isolate us again.'

I think that was what always bugged me about LJ. I was given "codes" early on, and one I filled out. Never posted. Never felt really welcome there. Joined a yahoogroups list that was heavily into LJing. So I reactivated (read: started using) my 2nd account set up over there. But still, LJ felt like a clique. "all the cool people are on LJ" and that just bugged the crap out of me. And JF doesn't appeal to me, cause the "fen". I do a lot of FYI about my RL. Welcome or not, that puts me off.

Maybe IJ is just still small enough, but it feels more comfortable. I tried GJ; it always took to long to load and stuff. Plus. GJ has it's own problems (loading/downtime/Missing icons...) I know part of it is Squeaky. He's very friendly, and sent me personal thanks early on for supporting the site. That meant a lot to me.

I did come over during the strikethrough. I was not personally affected, but know some folks who were. IJ was mentioned somewhere...Stewardess, maybe, as a good, cheap alternative. And after filling out 1 trouble ticket about a weird screen, I used another code, and it works fine.

I moved my unused comms here, too. TheGenGate and AtlantisGenGate. For Gen Stargate stuff. Got a couple members. Not concerned. *GG* Thinking about a seperate journal, too, for just my writing. Should have thought about that before Squeaky raised his rates *gasp!* :-))

Hope that was enough rambles for you guys. I'm hot and tired and kinda grumpy.

Gifts

Here's something I haven't seen anyone addressing yet on any of the fandom diaspora communities, yet I imagine it will affect quite a few people. I have no desire to give LJ/6A any more of my money. However I know many people have given virtual gifts and I know I have also gifted people with paid time, extra userpics, etc. What would be a good alternative to these sorts of micro thank you/special occasion gifts for people who are only on LiveJournal?

Important- Caution about creating RSS feeds

We’re trying to get the word out that folks should NOT use actual usernames when creating RSS feeds from LJ to other services, as it may block those folks from creating new accounts at IJ (and presumably GJ and JF as well). Seems the RSS feed creates a “dummy account” at username@journalservice.com in order to feed out the incoming entries. More info at http://stewardess.livejournal.com/277877.html?view=5724277#t5724277 and in comments further down the entries.

Some of these RSS feeds at IJ now have a number of people who have picked them up. According to the response I got from IJ support, no one can delete the actual RSS feeds but the sysadmin. Anyway, I suggest that if you have tried to create an IJ (or GJ) account and found yourselves blocked, leave a comment here, so there is a list for the support ticket. Or even just to see if there are enough folks to affected to put in a support ticket.

And, just in case, if you're at IJ and have subscribed to a feed for someone who appears on the suport ticket list, you might want to check for a username variant in already place and switch to that instead, just in case the IJ sysadmin will delete some feeds for folks.

gifts, another thought

YourLibrarian made me think. Dangerous thing, that is. I know it's early, but a "Holiday Wish List" site like LJ had last year would be nice. I'd love to see something year round.

Like if someone *really* wanted a paid account, and could not afford it, or only part of it, they could request on there. If folks wanted to donate a certificate or whatever, there would be links to the paid info at IJ. Plus, they could request fanfic, icons, pics, books, DVDs, avi's folks may have DLed...etc.

Would anyone think that would be a nice thing?

Shameless pimping

I made an icons challenge community.

[info]icons50.

Seeing how I run icons50 over on LJ *and it's always quite busy*, I figured I would make one for over here as well.

It's 50 icons in 12 week. No themes. Your choice of topic. I have lots of fandom categories to claim subject from: *Actors/Actresses, Animation, Comic Books, Miscellaneous, Models, Movies, Music, Sports, TV, Wrestling, Video Games*

You are allowed two claims at a time.
