The show was going well. For the first time Kerr took a moment to watch it herself. Standing off to the side, she watched as King places his giant paws on Jean’s shoulders and they walked a few steps together while Sheeba sat patiently to the side. A ‘click’ was heard and the trainer ordered King to the side. He padded to his spot and another ‘click’ and Sheeba came front and center. As the show went on, the tiger allowed her trainer to stand on her leg and raised her in the air, then did a jump through a hoop that raised in increments.
Kerr smiled and watched the tiger, almost sharing in the excitement it felt by performing- though not fully realizing that’s why she was smiling. Everything was going fine, until she suddenly felt a bit of apprehension. Her eyes were drawn to King who had moved to the edge of the stage. His rumbling growl grew louder. Most of the audience was focused on the performance and not the lion sitting on the side. At least, not until the worst happened.
When asked about it later, Kerr found herself able to only describe the events in flashes of memory. King leaped off the stage and rushed through the audience. He seemed singularly focused, just bowling through anyone who got in his way. Kerr felt anger in her and worry that didn’t seem to be her own.
Somehow, some reason, while everyone else scattered, she found herself standing before King, hands held up as she pleaded with him to stand down.
She felt his strong paws on her chest as he knocked her down, his eyes seemed torn by her pleas and wanting to go after whoever or whatever had gotten him riled up.
The tent emptied, Jean had ushered Sheeba into her cage before returning to help Kerr.
Kerr felt tears stream down her face as she looked up at the lion, begging him to get off her. As she touched his arm he seemed to pause. He backed off and let her get up. Kerr held a hand out to him, feeling the swirl of emotions coming off the big cat. It was strange, but she knew it was from him. “Please King, you’re scaring everyone. Go to your cage.” She felt fear and pain and something else she couldn’t describe. An energy. King’s head lowered and he snuffed at her hand before going to his cage. Jean ran after quickly and locked up.
The air felt electric as Kerr held her chest while Jean met to escort her to the med tent. Meanwhile, almost without either of them even knowing, Kristoph was standing near the Eli sending roustabouts and talkers out to spread the word and clear out the Carnival for the night. It was still a few hours before they normally ended, but with all the commotion caused by the incident it was better to clear everyone out and deal with things.
Word was passed to everyone to close up and retire for the night. There would be a gathering in the morning during breakfast, before mass.
