Title: As Strong as Life
Fandom: Haru wo Daiteita
Author: bronze_ribbons
Rating: PG
Words: ~ 1000

Pairing: Iwaki/Katou, pre-Katou/Yoshizumi
Summary: Katou and Yoshizumi can't say "no" to Iwaki's last requests.
Warning: character death (you think I would break them up any other way? Well, ok, I could, but not tonight. But I do have some notes for a set of drabbles...)
Notes: You'd think I would have learned by now not to taunt the bunnies. This one thumped me so hard that I wrote this whole thing just now in the Kentucky-Tennessee rest area parking lot (ETA: with some edits since). Feedback welcome (constructive as well as complimentary, if you feel so moved).

The week before he died, Iwaki forced Katou to swear that despair would not triumph over life -- that Katou would continue to act, and that Katou would someday let himself love someone else worthy of him.

Katou had screamed, "What's the use of promising something that won't happen? There can never be another Iwaki-san!" Iwaki had replied, "It will comfort me. You will let me die believing that I have defeated my own selfishness."

Katou's eyes had been stormy with mutiny and misery, but he had whispered, "Then of course I will promise you that." Iwaki was relieved that Katou was no longer arguing about "letting" him die, but he was also well aware that allowing nature its ruthless ways had never been Katou's inclination. Katou was "letting" him die only because Katou had seen how much it sapped Iwaki's remaining strength when well-meaning visitors pleaded with him to "fight on."

The last week, the only other visitor allowed in Iwaki's room was Yoshizumi. Yoshizumi was allergic to sentimentality, so Yoshizumi was restful. Yoshizumi brought snacks and changes of clothing for Katou, as Kaneko had become too well-known as Katou's manager to elude the press. While Katou showered or exercised -- knowing that Yoshizumi would call him immediately if Iwaki's condition changed in any way -- Yoshizumi stayed by Iwaki's side. He provided light chatter when Iwaki felt like discussing films, and he sat in companionable silence whenever Iwaki drifted into sleep.

The day before Iwaki died, he said to Yoshizumi, "It would be a great favor to me if you would care for Katou when I am gone."

Yoshizumi couldn't help frowning -- which caused Iwaki to smile. "I'm not trying to nauseate you."

Yoshizumi muttered, "Are you sure you're not delirious?"

Iwaki continued smiling. "Quite sure. I'm not asking you to love him or to cover for him. He's become quite a grown-up now that he's almost forty, and he can take care of himself."

"Then what--"

"He needs someone to be generous to. He needs people who are worthy of his generosity." Iwaki had become too weak to raise his hand up to Yoshizumi's head, but Yoshizumi instinctively pressed his cheek down against Iwaki's palm. "You will spend time with him?"

Yoshizumi nodded against Iwaki's palm, his throat too constricted to answer out loud. Iwaki murmured, "Good," and closed his eyes, still smiling.

Over the rest of the winter and throughout the spring, Katou sought out Yoshizumi almost daily. They seldom spoke of Iwaki, even though the dead man's presence was what bound them together, but Yoshizumi sometimes wondered if Iwaki had meant to continue "living" through him -- that Katou would cling to Yoshizumi's company the rest of their lives because he had been someone close to Iwaki.

One summer day, as they walked through a market, Katou suddenly stopped at a table heaped high with fabrics. He appeared mesmerized by a silk printed with cherry blossoms.

"I haven't seen that color since --" He broke off with an apologetic glance at Yoshizumi. "Sorry. Wasn't trying to nauseate you."

Yoshizumi surprised himself by grinning. "It's okay. Even though you've now ruined that color for me."

Katou grinned back. "Then I promise this won't be for you," he said, as he handed the fabric merchant some cash. As the merchant's assistant packaged up the silk, Yoshizumi theatrically shuddered, eliciting another grin from Katou.

"What do you intend to use it for?" Yoshizumi asked. "Underwear?"

Katou laughed out loud. "I wonder, would that please Iwaki's spirit? Or would he find it too outrageous? Either way, it would serve him right for not being around to stop me." His smile dimmed as he continued, "I'm actually going to use it to wrap up some of his belongings. I couldn't bear just to dump them into a box." He continued, his voice thoughtful, "It will be like this fabric is wearing them, when it holds them."

Yoshizumi glanced sharply at Katou, but refrained from comment until they'd reached the gate of the market. As they exited, he cautiously stated, "You have been taking this better than he would have, had you been the one to die first."

Katou looked directly at Yoshizumi. "Do you really think so? It is all an act, you understand. But I promised him I would keep acting, and that's all I can give him now."

Yoshizumi slowly said, "I could use your help going over the script I'm trying to learn... and there's a good yakitori place a few blocks from here."

"It would be my pleasure," Katou said. Several steps later, he added, "Would you then have time to read with me the new script from Hida-sensei?" His smile had brightened again. "You have a way of helping me see outside of my usual lens. It's one of the reasons Iwaki loved you too."

Yoshizumi's heart skipped a beat. It's just a phrase -- don't overthink this! He managed to keep his voice calm and friendly as he answered, "I would be honored to do so. So many actors would kill for an advance look at that script."

Katou nodded. "Indeed, they would." His eyes locked again with Yoshizumi's. "But not many actors can challenge me anymore. Not the way Iwaki-san did. Not the way you can."

Yoshizumi neither looked away nor flinched. "I am not Iwaki-san. No one can replace him."

Katou's voice was steady. "No, no one can. But what kind of actor would I be if I wasn't capable of loving different things with all my heart? "

A silence stretched between them -- a silence enveloped both with sorrow and possibility. Yoshizumi started to lift his hand towards Katou's cheek, but then thought better of it and let it fall onto Katou's shoulder.

"I have so much to learn," he sighed.

"So do I," Katou softly replied. "I can't help feeling glad that I'm alive to enjoy it."

Hmmm. I really liked this a lot, despite the breaking of couple. I wasn`t sure I believed in it until I reached this:

"Katou looked directly at Yoshizumi. “Do you really think so? It is all an act, you understand. But I promised him I would keep acting, and that’s all I can give him now.”"

It made sense, and made me truly believe that Katou/Yoshizumi could be a possible combination, were there no Iwaki left for Katou.

Also, I think that this, even if brief, showed some of Yoshizumi`s stoicism and the quiet, calm person he is. I like him, and the brief glimpse of him in this.

Con-crit-wise I don`t have much to say, since it is related to the breaking of Iwaki/Katou, and therefore only a personal like/dislike which in that regard has nothing to do with this well/written glimpse of what might happen if such a thing happened. You made me believe in it, which more than anything shows you did a good job.

Also, I am so happy it seems that the tiny comm`s members seem to take a liking in different characters than Iwaki and Katou. It would be so boring if we all sat and shipped them in this little corner. *loves on Onuzuka*

Thank you - I'm so relieved it passes muster!

the breaking of Iwaki/Katou, and therefore only a personal like/dislike

The irony is, I personally don't really want to read any story (canon or otherwise) where Iwaki/Katou aren't a couple, either. But sometimes a story insists on being written no matter what -- not unlike the Snupin adultery fic I couldn't help writing, or the Remus/Draco (IIRC, Lore actually growled at me after reading that one).

(Fortunately, once I posted this, my brain consented to focus on other stuff for the rest of my drive - including on a recording of old tanka translations I'd been meaning to listen to for months. The Librivox reader is great, but is very, very weird hearing anything Japanese translated into rhyming English with "thee"s and "thou"s.)

That's very intriguing. He's very intriguing... *considers Yoshizumi/Onozuka*
*brain now hurts*

*likes Remus/Draco a lot*

Yeah, that's how it is, impossible to suppress it at times. (And I'd have loved to see that; Lore growling...)

After I read this, and I had a little time pondering over it, I think I have decided that Yushizumi would go well with Miyasaka. I'd so love to see Miyasaka try to manipulate Yushisumi, then see how Yoshizumi pick him apart, just by being himself. Same could go for Onuzuka, although I am not sure Onuzuka would notice Yoshizumi.

I have Onuzuka/Iwaki Kyosuke (from Irokoi, Man Loves a Man, not the same as Harudaki Iwaki). That would be the clash of two Slytherins, and the outcome would be... impossible to predict.

Same could go for Onuzuka, although I am not sure Onuzuka would notice Yoshizumi.

He probably wouldn't if it were left just to him... but one tantalizing possibility would be to pay more attention to Yoshizumi's mean streak. It interests me that he shows zero hesitation about trying to send Katou into a jealous rage just as a "prank." while there are many benign ways to interpret that scene (and I like the Iwaki/Katou/Yoshizumi friendship dynamics, so I'm likely to keep with those in most of my reading/writing) ... but one could also argue that Y. is showing signs of a coldness and/or ruthlessness that Onozuka might well find attractive, or at least compelling. For example, Y. might casually critique O.'s attempt to manipulate a third party, which would subsequently stick in O.'s craw...

Aaaah - so many delicious possibilities! *tears self away from the plotwarren*

It's so sweet and sad. I like the flow. Not forced at all.

I just wish I could remember who Yoshizumi is... I need to go back and re-read. I suck at names.

Thank you - I'm so glad to hear the pacing's right.

(Yoshizumi's the actor who first played Aizawa before the fire accident damaged his voice and lungs. He appears mainly in volumes 9 and 10.)

I'm either not remembering that bit, or I don't have it. Ah, well... Something to look forward to, I guess. :D

I'm working on my Yoshizumi fic, and I thought I'd go back and re-read your Yoshizumi fics, since they've really influenced how I view the character. I didn't leave any feedback the first time around, since I hadn't read the Yoshizumi chapters of the manga yet.

So I just wanted to say, rather belatedly, that this was really beautiful and touching, even though you killed off half of my OTP! ~_^ But somehow you did the unthinkable and made it work. It was sort of manipulative and yet very loving, the way that Iwaki made Katou promise to move on with his life after Iwaki was gone, because he knew that Katou wouldn't be able to deny him once he said, "It will comfort me." And I loved the way that Yoshizumi was able to offer comfort to both of his friends, and in the way that Katou found the strength to keep his promise to Iwaki and begin to open his heart to Yoshizumi. I also agree with Yoshizumi that Katou would handle Iwaki's death much better than the other way around--I'm sure we've talked about this before, but I think Iwaki would just break if he ever lost Katou.

I also have to say that I was fascinated by your and Snapelike's discussion of Onozuka and Yoshizumi, and now I really want to see the two of them interact. I think that Onozuka's gotten a little smug in his manipulations of Katou and Miyasaka, and it would be really great to force him to deal with someone who's more of a challenge.
