Eye of the Tiger!
Who: Daisuke and Lovisa
Where: Dojo area of the Gym in the Catacombs
When: 14 January 2012, early afternoon
What: Daisuke trains and takes on a pupil.
Rating: IDK G?
Status: Complete

Daisuke had a considerable amount on his mind. He was content on pushing it into the back of his head and continue on with what he was supposed to do like he normally did for most of his life. That stupid child of Loki had to begin to poke the nest. And before that, Simon had his episode. While Daisuke knew part of that was influenced by the love potion but he was unsure about how much of it was. Before then, it was already a seed of thought planted in the back of his head and the plant was now starting to grow. He wanted to cut at it but it seemed to grow. And grow. And worse, he felt he couldn't properly articulate how he felt beyond feeling confused.

The winter short days were additionally getting to him. He had a mild case of Seasonal Affective Disorder but it came with being a solar demi-god and his curse was to be lethargic at night. He had to force himself to be more active. While Daisuke did run on the treadmill about twice a week and he'd practice his kendo at least once a week, he knew he had to kick himself to be a bit more active.

So that brings him to today in the gym in the Catacombs in the dojo. It seemed many people didn't want to work out there on a Saturday afternoon. Probably because they had something of a social life. He wanted to work off his confused set of feelings and to work off the winter funk. Then afterwards, he would make baguettes. Baguettes with Simon. No. He shook that out of his head as he worked on his kata. Dressed in traditional garb and holding Hi-Ken high above his head, he swung downward, complete with a kiyah, which unintentionally set off his sunny battle aura which disappaited at the ending of the movement. It was in his effort to practice the task at hand and forget about all the confusing aspects of his life.

I should really get back into competing again, Daisuke thought as he continued with another, no aura this time. I need to stop being idle... Nevermind he was busier than a lot of people.

For Lovisa, going to the gym was a bit of a necessary hassle than something she enjoyed doing. Every other day she would take to a stationary bike or the treadmill, then follow it up with free weights or something to strengthen her core or maintain her flexibility. Post holiday season, her work level had subsided but she still felt that sense of harried rush that came with too much to do in a short amount of time. For the past week she had focused on nothing but meditation and yoga, doing all that she could to shake off the stress and holiday burnout.

She had finished her cardio warm-up and was walking in the direction of the yoga room when her attention was turned by the loud kiyah. A flash of light consumed her peripheral vision and she turned her head to locate the source. Stepping into the dojo with her towel slung over one shoulder and a yoga mat tucked under one arm, Lovisa caught sight of a tall Japanese man in traditional kendo attire, but the light was no longer present. She silently watched the next kata from the doorway, not wanting to steal his attention away but impressed by his movements on the dojo floor.

Daisuke did focus a lot on his energy into kendo. He was a year away from his 5-dan and Daisuke knew he had to keep it up to hold onto his level in terms of practice. After all, he never knew who was watching and who was looking to him to be some sort of rolemodel. Like it took him a few moments to realize he was being watched then. He turned around to position himself for a different kata and that is when he noticed he was in the line of sight of someone else.

His eyes grew wide in surprise but he did not express any other sort of body language that he was surprised. She looked Asian... well, Asian and had a hair full of redhair. Daisuke didn't know if it was natural or not. Especially not this day in age. Still, he had to admit, he felt reasonably awkward. He usually did in situations like this. However, he didn't want to show it. So he squared his shoulders and held his head at a level like he was looking down. It was quite different from the look he presented when he thought it was just him. That was of the man who at least was seemed a tiny bit unsure.

He licked his lips as he tried to think of the best way to greet her, "Good Afternoon. Do you practice kendo?" He realized for a moment, the irony in that statement. If he had been a white guy, that would have come off as particularly racist. But then again, he was assuming since she was Asian and watching his forms, she must know some.

"Good afternoon," she repeated with an uncertain smile. Not only was he very tall, but being looked down on did make her feel on edge. She kept close to the wall, hugging her mat now. If push came to shove, she could use it as a weapon. Maybe. Shaking her head at this question, she chuckled at the presumption but didn't take offense to it. She looked more Asian than she did European, those conclusions were made often. "I practice yoga."

"I'm Lovisa, that's nice handling of the-" Lovisa trailed off, unsure what they called the weapon in Daisuke's hand, so she pointed at it instead. "-well, that. It looks like it could really do damage."

"Ah. Well, yoga does have its benefits..." Daisuke said after a pause as he pondered what would be the right reaction to it. She definitely seemed like the sort who engaged in yoga frequently. But he somehow felt that would be rude to point it out.

"I'm Daisuke," he introduced. While he had an American accent, he said his name in the appropriate pronunciation. "Ah, I suppose it could. And has. But it is never about how much damage you do, but whether you can appropriately protect yourself and your loved ones..." he said in a stoic tone, still holding himself in the way before.

"You should try it sometime, it's great for stress," she recommended, smiling faintly. Was she implying that the guy looked as if he needed loosening up? Most definitely.

"Nice to meet you, Daisuke." Lovisa replied, using the correct pronunciation of his name without difficulty. "You know, I've been trying to have this exact same argument with my father. Why give someone a weapon to defend themselves and then not show them how to properly use it?"

Daisuke raised an eyebrow because he was unsure if that was a good-natured jab or a malicious one, "Perhaps. The exercise you get from yoga is definitely unique and great for muscle toning..." he decided to pretend it was good natured. "My schedule is tight enough, however."

He smiled a little at her response, "I know of many godlings who feel the same way. Like I was 12 when I got my sword but I already had been studying kendo. I didn't get my first dan until 13 though..." He paused for a moment, "What kind of sword is it? I can show you a few things..."

"You can always find time for a few poses, if the want is strong enough for it," Lovisa pointed out with a shrug. "A standing sun pose or salutation is a good way to start a morning."

"Min Jǫtnarsvärd...well, it's a paperweight." She set her mat and towel on the ground so that she could extract the head-shaped stone from her pocket. It did not take an incantation to reveal its true form, just a flick of her palm and she had a hilt to grab onto with both and a blade that was almost as long as her body. The blade appeared dull, but in contact with the right target. "Could you? Really all I know is how to hold it without falling over."

"Hmm... perhaps I should..." Daisuke said lightly. "It probably would help my back somewhat." He said wryly, of course, he wasn't being all that untruthful. His stress liked to go to his lower back. Came from sitting down a lot and being rather tall.

"Min Jots-" Daisuke tried repeat then just gave up. For a moment, something akin to awkwardness danced across his features before he returned to his default. "Oh, so you're a Norse demi-god? I thought you may be a Shinto one like me..." He sighed a little before holding up his katana. "This is Hi-Ken." His sword suddenly lit up. "It does that..."

Then he hid a smile. "I can. Although that is a rather large sword."

She smiled and repeated the name of the sword, adding, "'My giant sword' is a literal interpretation. Pun intended, obviously." Nodding affirmative to his guess, she shrugged. "I could say I was the daughter of Uke no Mochi, Benten, or Hachiman, but I'm a terrible liar." As she listed off kami in the Shinto pantheon, she used the proper pronunciation and honorifics. "My mom's Japanese."

Her eyes widened as Hi-Ken shone brightly, she would've clapped if her hands weren't full. After she stated so, she smiled as she lowered the tip of the blade to the floor. "It's big, but it's dull against humans and demi-gods. Well, at least I think it is, can't even cut an apple with it."

Daisuke raised an eyebrow at that. Of course, he can't complain. His sword literally meant Sun Sword. "I know what you mean by interestingly named swords."

He hid a smile when she mentioned her mother was Japanese and asked, hiding the eagerness in his voice and in Japanese, "Ahh do you speak Japanese fluently?" He tested. Hey, he liked speaking his first language whenever he could.

"Perhaps your parent wanted you to learn how to use it first. But..." Daisuke pursed his lips as if thinking. "I probably will start you on the bokkun." He pointed to the wooden swords. "So you can get the principles down."

"I think most, if not all are," she chuckled. Her smile brightened when he switched to Japanese, switching to that language in her reply. "My mother made certain I speak it as well as I can, but I am sure I sound like a foreigner."

"I think he has different plans for me," Lovisa admitted, the gift bestowed on her was a failsafe, but not necessarily her birthright. Becoming a giant slayer was not in her cards. She glanced over at the bokkun and nodded. "Those look perfect. If I can get the basics, this might be more useful to me. Thank you so much!"

"I know I sound like a foreigner. I grew up in San Jose," Daisuke responded holding back a smirk. "When I studied for a year in Japan, I got constantly told about my accent. It is odd because Japanese is my first language."

He glances back at the bokkuns before his cell phone began ringing, indicating text, to the side where he placed it. Daisuke approached it and picked it up. It was Simon. Baguettes. "Wow, I didn't realize what time it was. I probably should get going. Your phone number so we can discuss schedules and find a time?" He had a very business tone for the last sentence like they could be colleagues."

"That's what I love about linguistics, the nuances that comes from life circumstance. I was about to ask if you were from the west coast." Lovisa chuckled, explaining, "I once had a professor who could tell where a person was from by talking to him once, he tutored me in North American dialects."

She glanced at the wall clock and wrinkled her nose, the yoga session was already half an hour in if the instructor started on time. Luckily for Lovisa, the woman rarely did. At Daisuke's request, she recited her phone number. At his professional manner, her eyebrows quirked but she did not seem to take offense at it. Turning to her bag, she set aside her sword and pulled a business card from the front pocket.

Turning back to Daisuke, she held it out to him with both hands. "My schedule depends on the number of clients are booked for the week, but it is flexible."
