WHO: Izzy Cooper and Coyote
WHERE: Izzy's apartment
WHEN: July 12, evening
RATING: PG
SUMMARY: Something tells me Daddy is disappointed in his little girl
STATUS: Complete

Izzy's day had been one of those that was busy but productive. She'd gone into work early so she could take off for a fitting with Ava. She's decided on some amazing clothes for Ava to make for her and she'd done a ton of grocery shopping. She suspected that she would probably end up feeding half of the people she knew with what she'd purchased but she liked to cook and doing something where the steps were second nature to her gave her time to think. And she had a lot to think about.

She'd managed to find two of the eight phones in a week and a half which was completely not where she wanted to be with Mitra's task. She had been debating about posting on the godling net to see if anyone had noticed their texts becoming reality. She had a sneaking suspicion that someone who knew Ken well had one of the phones because he wasn't quite acting like himself. She'd fixed Ava's so that left the strong possibilities that it could be either Odette or Rylee. She figured that she could stop by the Catacombs tomorrow after work and do a thorough search. And then put something up on the network Saturday if she wasn't closer to the end.

As worried as she was about the phones and her task she couldn't help but admit that she'd spent a disproportionate amount of time thinking about the thing that had eaten Mitra. Even though it hadn't been interested in her she could feel in her bones that this thing was a huge threat but she had no idea what it was or where it came from. And that made her feel even more lost. She was trying to fit in and to figure things out but sometimes it seemed like every day gave her a dozen different things to remember or reminded her in a dozen different ways that she really didn't know what the fuck she was doing.

She was so completely caught up in her thoughts that she reached for the pan she'd been using to sautee andouilli sausage with her bare hand. She jerked it away before she could actually injure herself but it smarted like hell. She quickly turned the cold water on and put her hand under the stream. The immediate relief told her that she hadn't actually burned herself but it was still a dumb move.

He's pleased that she answers him openly and honestly, even if it is a mild frustration for her to be defying him just as openly and honestly. He's pleased that she has thought about this carefully, and that she's able to think for herself. The problem is perhaps that he feels her thoughts might - despite all this - be tainted. That is to say, he has associated himself with other gods and goddesses who are almost universally mistrusted. Most of them with good reason, but for now, he needs their strength. He and those others in his pantheon - forced to the outskirts not due to their deeds, but by the encroachment of other power-grasping pantheons - deal with the problems they present when he gets past the problems the others present. The unfortunate thing is that if Izzy is learning about her powers and her identity through the children of those gods who have alienated and oppressed their pantheon, she's likely to have a very erroneous view of his actions.

He sighs, expression softening a little, and pushes away from the counter, tucking his hands into the pockets of his jeans. Yes, he is wearing a sport jacket, button down shirt, and jeans with a big, fancy belt buckle. He walks away from her towards the end of the room, surveying the decor there, or just looking out the window (provided there is one there to look out of), before tilting his head back. "Do you believe that I am truly out to hurt others? Isabelle, do you understand why we are considered 'outsiders'? Do you really understand, or have you only heard it from books written by the children of other pantheons - or from those children's very mouths?"

She hadn't expected that question from Coyote. She knew that her father was aligned with the darker gods though she honestly didn't feel that he himself was a dark person. Chaotic, certainly, but she knew her father liked humanity and that his primary goal was that of a teacher even if she didn't always approve of his methods.

"I can think for myself Co...father," she had never been sure what to call Coyote and the time never seemed right to ask him, "I know that our gods have been forced away as the gods from other pantheons have come here to the New World. And I would give almost anything to make it wasn't so but not on the backs of the children of gods. Not by hurting people who didn't ask for their parents to be who they are. I would love for there to be more of my own pantheon but not if it means that I have to watch another god get eaten. That was the single most terrifying thing that I've ever witnessed," she shuddered just thinking about the creature eating Mitra.

She bridged this distance between them pulling gently on his sleeve so he would look at her, "I care about these people. They aren't a means to an end for me. I've never had one of them say anything to me about what pantheon I come from and no one has tried to speak poorly of you to me. I'm grateful to them because I would never have known who I really am if it weren't for them. Did you know I can unlock most doors now?"

Her last sentence was that of a daughter wanting her father's approval. She loved Zacharie Cooper more than just about anything but Coyote was her father and she wanted him to be proud of her no matter how mixed her feelings were about his associations.

Coyote does look down at her, smiling wanly. He is not the sort of god who would browbeat his children into submission. Whether they will follow him or not is up to them. While he had hoped to have garnered the sort of respect and trust that would guarantee that, it seems that his daughter has learned things outside of his teachings, and though he may have centuries of experience and insight above her, her will is strong. He can see by her face that her heart may be set on this. Gently, he puts a hand over her own, his smile growing sad. It is never a happy thing when family have such strongly opposing views, but he must walk his path, and she hers, and hopefully, they will both glean some meaning from it.

"I understand," he says simply. "If this is what you truly believe..." He releases her hand and gives her a look - a look that means she should already know where they must go from here. "I will not aid you if you choose the other side, though I will not harm you either. I will ask only once more time: is this what you truly desire, Isabelle?"

Izzy blinked several times understanding the absolute gravity of the situation, "Yes, Father, it is. I don't want to go against you but everything in me tells me that I'm doing the right thing. I'm using what little power I have to protect people I care about and I hate that it means going against what you want for me, I really do, but I feel like I have to do this."

She didn't cry easily, she hadn't as a child and she'd cried even less as she'd gotten older but she could feel tears forming. She didn't like that this was happening but something told her that she'd set herself on this path a long time ago and she should have known that the day would come when she would have to defy one of her fathers.

"And I understand that you can't help me. I made my choice and I'll face the consequences," even though you could hear the tears in her voice it didn't waver. She didn't want to disappoint Coyote further by seeming weak after having made her decision.

Coyote's bitter smile doesn't fade as the tears fill Izzy's eyes. Her heart is set, and he, too, has things he must do. He does not move to touch her again, nor comfort her. It won't do either of them any good now, as neither is intending to budge on their stance. It can only bring about more sorrow, so he just slowly nods, turning away from her once more.

"I hope that one day, we will once again be able to speak as we once did. Be well, my daughter," he says quietly and begins to fade.

Izzy impulsively reached out to hug Coyote as he started to fade. She didn't say anything as he disappeared because she had no idea how to respond to what had just happened. Robotically she returned to the stove to turn the burners off but then she walked away from the food having completely lost her appetite.

There was so much from the short visit to process. Her father flat out told her that a war of some kind was coming. And she'd placed herself on the wrong side as far as he was concerned. She knew that she should be happy that he hadn't gone off on her or forced her to his point of view but it was somehow harder for her to deal with the fact that he still cared for her. He'd promised her that he wouldn't harm her but that clearly meant that people would get harmed.

She knew that she should start preparing for what was coming but how did one prepare for a war of gods. Izzy thought about leaving briefly. Of packing everything up and going back to New Orleans. Her grandparents would be happy to have her back home she knew. But going back mean returning to a place where she didn't really like who she was and facing the anger she still carried towards her mother and somehow that was more frightening than facing down gods and god eaters. She wasn't sure what that said about her. Instead of preparing to leave Izzy started preparing herself for the darkness that was looming. She only hoped she would be strong enough to face it.
