From a ledge in the shadows, overlooking the Capital of America on a rather muggy summer evening stood a figure dressed in black. It seemed he wore a suit of all things, an outfit which wasn’t unusual for the area. No, it was what this figure chose to use to cover his face that made him seem out of place. Across his eyes, he wore a masquerade mask, a yellow and orange one made out of feathers. It was elegant enough that it matched with his formal wear. While his eyes were covered, through the slits, he searched for any scuffles. He kept his ears open to hear for cries of help. He felt for a change in the wind that would trigger his intuition. He smelled for smoke or gun powder. He was a man with a mission, seeking to help the citizens of Washington, DC from thugs and criminals.

This figure’s name was Daisuke Tendo… but now, he saw himself as the Sun Samurai!

…

So he still needed to work on his superhero name. Daisuke, even with his new sense of purpose, lacked creativity.

While Daisuke’s urge to help and protect people occurred practically since birth, it seemed to be relatively recently that he felt he really had to do something outside interviews and paperwork. He couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment he felt he had to make this alternate identity and do the dirty work the police seemed incapable of doing but he started to feel the surge of self-righteousness not long after his arrival in the city. He overheard people talking about the problem of crime in the area. Then he read a local newspaper that spoke of a rise in rape and muggings. Something about that just upset him enough to walk into a costume store to purchase a mask and set up an area to perch as he waited for any hint of someone breaking the law.

His waiting soon paid off as he suddenly heard the scream of a female citizen in distress. Quickly, he ran towards this subconscious Bat Signal. True, the sun hovered at the horizon diminishing Daisuke’s sun power, but he still felt he had the strength. Besides, it doesn’t matter when you have the strength of heart! He spun around the corner, his feet sliding him a few feet. As soon as he got his bearings, he stood up tall and placed his hand on his hip. Part of him wished he got a cape so he could flip it at moments like these, or maybe a top hat. No, no capes. Daisuke figured that would be impractical. Chasing after criminals this way was impulsive and impractical enough!

It quickly became clear Daisuke stumbled upon a woman attempting to spur unwanted advances from a thuggish looking man. He had her up against the wall, one hand propping him up over her and the other, holding a knife to her throat.

“Do you think anyone in this town will hear your cries for help?” he said in a low and threatening voice.

The young woman, deterred by the knife to her throat just let out a pitched wail, tears springing to her eyes. She looked away as the thug ran his knife down her throat to cut at a button on her shirt.

“Only the inhuman bully women in such a way,” Daisuke said darkly but loud enough for the thug to stop doing what he was doing.

The thug quickly strong-armed the girl into a headlock and held the knife to her throat, “What the fuck, man? Are you a cop? No… what the fuck is with the mask? Are you an escaped nutjob trying to pretend to be Spiderman?”

The girl cried softly as Daisuke looked back at the thug, “… Better to pretend to be Spiderman than someone failing to pretend to be a big man. Let her go.”

“Come closer and I will cut her throat…” The thug threatened.

Daisuke rolled his eyes, “So you will add murder to your portfolio all because you can’t get a girl to like you the conventional way…” He figured there was not much else he could do to convince this guy of anything else. He activated his aura which immediately blinded both the girl and the thug.

“What the hell? Who brings a FLASHLIGHT-“ the thug could not continue his thought because Daisuke jabbed him in the mouth with the hilt of Hi-Ken. There was so much force behind it, it sent the thug stumbling backwards onto his behind, letting go of the girl. He spit out a blood covered gold tooth, not noticing at first as Daisuke took a step closer to tower over him. The girl immediately took her opening to make a run for it.

“Here is what you’re going to do…” Daisuke commented quietly as he held his blade out towards the thug, “You are going to turn yourself in. If you cannot agree to this, I will not hesitate to cut it off so you will lose the urge…” he pointed the katana at the thug’s crotch. “If I find out you lie? I will find you and do much more than that. Got it?”

The thug suddenly smiled. For a moment, Daisuke thought he was being mocked. Then he noticed the thug looked behind him. Sensing there was a presence there, Daisuke turned around to be met with a fist right into his face. His paper thin mask did not protect his eye, which he could already feel was swelling on the moment of impact. Another pair of fists took a few good shots at Daisuke’s torso. Another fist got a good shot at his jaw. It seemed the thug had a couple of friends close by.

Daisuke almost felt dazed by the sudden ambush by thugs. However, Arata’s name shined briefly on his sword and Daisuke acted in an almost “spidey sense” when Thug #1 tried to grab him from behind. He grabbed the thug and swung him over his back at one of the other two like a sack of potatoes. Thug #1 and Thug #2 fell to the ground, dazed. That still left Thug #3 who, after a moment of being held off guard, punched in Daisuke’s general direction. Daisuke took ahold of the thug’s wrist and used his momentum to toss the last thug in the accumulating thug pile, knocking one of the previous thugs back on the ground again.

Despite feeling sore, Daisuke kept his head up high and flicked his sword towards the thug pile. His eyes narrowed as he could practically see the stars in their eyes, “I will not hesitate to use this…”

Daisuke actually had a long speech prepared to set those thugs on the path of righteousness. However, he saw the police lights and heard the sirens coming. It was time to become scarce. After all, the cops frown on vigilantism. Daisuke turned around and boosted himself on top of a dumpster to hoist himself over the wall. He tumbled into a somersault into a standing position on the other side. That would have been a move Daisuke wouldn’t be entirely sure he could accomplish but now he seemed like he could. He didn’t even acknowledge to himself how he could have done it. He did it because it was all for justice.

He turned the corner to prepare to walk back to the metro and back to his hotel. He saved one life that day. Now, he had to tend to his wounds so he would be ready tomorrow. He didn’t get to walk very far before he heard a female voice calling out from behind.

“Hey, you!” she called as she ran up so she was side-by-side. Daisuke slowed down to glance down at her. It was the girl he just saved.

She didn’t wait for his response, “Thank you so much for saving me…” she sounded grateful and even glanced up at him in an almost coy way.

“I am glad you are now safe…” Daisuke commented in a non-committed way.

“Do you think that maybe we could get a cup of coffee and get to know each other better?” She reached out for Daisuke’s sleeve to which Daisuke instinctually pulled away.

“Miss, I’m glad you’re safe, but you must understand, my heart belongs to someone else…” he responded truthfully.

She blinked a few times, “Oh. Well, she must be very lucky…”

Daisuke hid a smile as he took several paces forward, “Yes… he is very lucky…” He, then, removed his mask and slipped it into his back pocket.

“Wait… he?!” she said after a pause then looked around, even looking right at Daisuke as he moved away, “Where did you go?”

As Daisuke walked closer to the metro, he pondered adding to his bare bones costume. After all, he was a snappy dresser.
