WHO Logan and Bastet
WHERE Logan and Kit's apartment
WHEN Sunday, 8 July, afternoon
RATING PG
SUMMARY Logan's mom drops by for a visit
STATUS complete

Another hot day meant another day Logan really didn't feel the urge to do anything aside from loll around reading, listening to music or sleeping. He'd already drunk at least two litres of water and consumed half the ice blocks from the freezer. At least it was Sunday and he didn't have to be anywhere or do any work, although he had made some effort to work on the job Sal had given him. He was whittling down the list, weeding out the demigods whose parents he knew, either through their public comment over the network or through his own knowledge, and it was nearly done.

But now he had put work aside and mooched out to the garden, sunglasses on and a cold drink in hand. It was time to soak up a bit of sunshine, Hattie and Seti were already out by the sun lounger, clearly expecting him to join them. Indeed, as he walked out, Seti lifted his head and let out a little greeting mew. Hattie simply opened her eyes and then closed them again, but it was a greeting all the same.

Settling down on the sun lounger, Logan adjusted the sun umbrella over his head and took a sip of his drink before lying back, eyes closing. It didn't take long before he was shifting into a doze, feeling the sun warm on his skin and listening to the faint sounds of people on the street. But the peaceful feeling didn't last long. A little questioning chirrup from Hattie roused him and Logan blinked open his eyes, getting the feeling someone else was near.

"Kit?"

Logan's eyes narrowed slightly as his mother spoke, his lips pressing together. He knew the stories of the gods, having learned the Egyptian myths for obvious reasons and then the Greek ones because of Kit. The rest he had studied both out of natural curiousity - for once you start with one set of gods it was hard not to be curious about the others - and also because he had an inkling the knowledge would be useful. The more he knew about the other pantheons, the better he could understand his fellow demigods. And, if necessary, use that knowledge for his own personal well-being.

But knowing about battles from the old days was one thing, it was easy to dismiss those. His mother's words only confirmed the unease Logan had been feeling lately, and trying to ignore, ever since the god eater problem started.

He dropped his gaze briefly when Bastet's eyes flashed. His mother was a goddess after all, and even her son felt a slight tremour when her eyes flashed like that. His eyes rose up to meet hers again soon enough, his expression serious. "It's going to happen very soon, isn't it?" he said, hardly asking a question, just stating what his heart knew was a fact. She wouldn't have said 'days' if there was more time, he was sure of it. Logan sighed. So much for carefree days coming along in the near future. "Surroundings, huh? That includes other demigods too?" again it was more a statement than a question. After all, there were children of the outcast gods running around.

Bastet was pleased with Logan's studiousness - it was one example of a cat's renowned curiosity, and it demonstrated well the benefits of curiosity. It also pleased her that her son was so interested in the Old Ways, regardless of whether it was due to a feline trait or not. It made her wonder about that saying - curiosity killed the cat. Humans were such strange creatures, calling dogs man's best friend, but to call someone a dog is an insult. The goddess wondered if they thought about what passed into their common speech.

Bastet had not meant to frighten her son with her angry, determined look, and so she felt a twinge of regret for having done so; she also, however, felt a (secret) bit of gratification - like most deities, she was pleased to elicit awe from lesser beings, and fear was a part of awe. Her expression did not bely any of this, though, and she regarded him with calm features when he asked his questions. "Yes, Logan. It will happen soon - it is even already happening, though the danger will continue to grow. And you are right - your fellow demigods are not all on our side. It is important to remember that appearances are deceiving, my son. Not all who appear to be enemies are, and not all who appear to be allies should be trusted." Perhaps it would surprise Logan to hear that, but he needed the reminder whether or not it was truly a surprise.

Due to his work, first in forensics and then as a private investigator, Logan held no illusions about how deceptive people could be. He'd seen some who all thought were so straight-up and perfect turn out to be monsters beneath a smiling mask, and others that looked like thugs turn out to be teddy bears. Appearances were definitely deceiving and as he hated to be fooled, he was always watchful. It was why he was selective over what he shared on the network, because one never really knew who was watching that. Many knew about his senses, but only a handful knew what his sistrum earring could do, or just how agile he was. He even kept his martial arts ability on the down low.

Still, it was never nice to think of being betrayed by someone you liked and so he sighed a little sadly at his mother's words. "I understand," he nodded, mouth twisting into a small regretful smile before lifting his chin and straightening his shoulders. "I'll be on my guard, mother, don't worry about that. Like you, I won't slink away and I'll face it, whatever it is, but making sure the odds are in my favour," he couldn't help a small smirk as his words echoed the lines from the Hunger Games.

"Oh, and you'll be pleased to know I unlocked more of the secrets of your gift," he added rather proudly as he fingered his earring, acting a bit like a kid telling his parent he'd received an A+ for an important test.

Bastet felt a slight pang of regret of her own - she hated that her son would have to view the world in such a guarded way. True, her children, like cats, should be prepared, honing all their instincts no matter how pampered their lives. And there was a certain pride in watching her children fare well against an opponent or difficult situation. But she still wished quiet, pampered lives for all of them - so long as they kept their claws sharp, so to speak. "I'm glad to hear you will be watchful of danger, my son. But be watchful for unexpected allies, as well. Don't think I come to only bring you bad news - what sort of guest would I be then?" she teased, even if the seriousness remained in her eyes.

The cat goddess smiled at her Logan's proud declaration and cupped his cheek lovingly, a proud smile on her lips. "I knew you would. I am proud of you, Logan." There was a momentary silence as she regarded her son with that proud, loving look, but then she sighed. "Sadly, I cannot stay. Have you anything else you need to discuss with me?"

Logan smiled broadly and shook his head. He was certainly not upset that she was bringing troubling news. Especially as he was already in the thick of it, so to speak, by helping Sal track down the one ultimately responsible for releasing the god-eating monster thing. And even if he wasn't involved, Logan was observant by nature and training, it was hard to catch him by surprise.

"Whatever news you bring, mother, it's always good to see you," there was just a hint of wistfulness in his tone then. Logan might understand why Bastet didn't see him often, but that didn't mean he couldn't miss her.

"Nothing to discuss, but just a question," he frowned slightly then. "I have been working closely with the son of Anubis to find out who tricked him into releasing the... creature. We have our suspicions..." he paused and looked at Bastet. Would she also think Set was responsible? Or maybe she even knew. Logan didn't want to say the god's name and attract his attention. "and I think we are on the right track, but is it worth pursuing? Or is it better to focus on what's coming up?"

Bastet smiled regretfully at Logan's wistful tone, and she stood, preparing to depart as her son posed his question. "It is always worth pursuing any secret knowledge, Logan. You know that. But do not let your focus on your prey blind you to the predator hunting you." The goddess gave her child one more serious look before heading toward the nearest shadow where the fabric of her dress seemed to meld with the shade and darkness enveloped her and she disappeared.
