Memorial Day had been one of those other holidays Daisuke's family only celebrated because everything pretty much shut down on that day. He got to understand it a bit more when he grew up and did admittedly feel very awkward when people spoke about their grandfather who served in World War II. Daisuke's grandfathers did serve in World War II but it was on the losing side, the losing side which had many human rights violations to their ranks. Daisuke admittedly was curious what Amaterasu thought about the Japanese Imperial Army during that time but he felt it was a topic his family rarely brought up so perhaps it would be too rude to. So Daisuke never felt entirely right celebrating Memorial Day for that reason. He knew many Sansei in the region who told of relatives that served on the US side then when they came home decorated were forced into internment camps. It was odd, even the winning side had some human rights violations. Sure, it wasn't to the level as the Batan Death March but it didn't erase what happened to those families who lost money, respect, and land due to the war.
Even as Daisuke now served on the side of the United States and got the federal holiday off, he saw it more as a mini-vacation. In the past, he usually spent it just engaging in some R&R. This was the first time he went away. However, parades and fireworks was the last thing he planned on doing. Daisuke envisioned it after his partner had given him the idea of Simon and himself on a deserted island. Only them. No parents, no gods, no responsibilities. All they were were a couple of consenting adults who loved each other and somehow found each other through some twisted dark miracle.
After a long day of driving and stocking the cottage for the weekend, Friday consisted of eating pizza on the porch overlooking high tide as the sun set. Saturday consisted of some morning smooching, a big breakfast, lunch and shopping in town, then a planned romantic night in the cottage. Daisuke did his best to keep it a secret. He sent Simon on an errand to get some ice cream so Daisuke could set up the wine, the flowers, the music, the candles, the lube and when Simon arrived back, the ice cream was left in the freezer forgotten. Sure, it was a learning experience but Daisuke found, despite the awkwardness of doing it right, it was a very special moment.
His mother visited him in his dream, or tried to. She was rebuffed by Aphrodite who did rule exclusively in the area. "A romance between the sun and the moon cannot last" his mother had said. Daisuke thought but did not say that didn't stop you and Tsukiyomi... He got up early the next morning and did some thinking by the beach. Where did he go from here? He wanted Simon to stay in his life.
That morning, Daisuke and Simon had another session of snuggles and kisses after breakfast but then decided to go for a walk on the beach, collecting shells. Daisuke brought a pail with them as he dressed incredibly down for him. He work a pair of jean shorts (to the knees kinds) and a blue t-shirt with the pocket on the breast. He also wore flipflops as he made a conscious decision to not bring socks.
There was a sparkling pink foam washing up with the tide and the weather was warm but not hot. The breeze off the ocean remained refreshing. He picked up a purplish scallop and showed it to Simon, "The colors are darker here..." he mentioned briefly. He was used to California.
