It was Friday night and Daisuke would have normally been asleep at this time, under normal circumstances. Now, he stood outside on his balcony, looking out among the skyscrapers of Manhattan. He was dressed kind of like a slob for him. He wore a pair of UCLA sweatpants and a sweatshirt from the Japanese college he went to. He hadn’t showered in a couple of days. He showered on Wednesday night, mainly to wash shame away. It freaked him out how the water that ran off his body was tinged with red.
He refused to eat. He refused to leave his apartment. He didn’t want to hurt an innocent. He would refuse to eat. While suicidal thoughts briefly crossed his mind, he found he couldn’t give up. He’d fight against his nature. It was very hard. He could hear people in the hallway as they passed and it wasn’t footsteps. It was their hearts beating. It made him so hungry it hurt. It was enough for him to momentarily growl and feel more animal than human. As he hid in the darkness during the day, he barely slept because his stomach hurt so much from hunger.
On Thursday Night, he ate a pigeon. For a moment he panicked it being Clarence but it was just a pigeon that Daisuke bit into like an apple. He was so hungry, he didn’t realize he did it until he nearly choked on a feather. It helped the starving feeling momentarily but it was like eating a bag of chips and nothing else.
Now it was Friday and Daisuke was beginning to feel in that stage of hunger that he contemplated eating Francis, his pet lizard. He didn’t risk going outside because all of them were filled with precious blood. He was beginning to look more and more like a corpse, his face looking rather hollow. Bags under his eyes looked scorched. His lips were dry. Even with this, the blessing of appearance from his mother still made him appear striking. The feathers from the pigeon he ate swirled at his feet. Daisuke didn’t notice them. All he could think about was how hungry he was.
Then his doorbell rang. That was odd. Who would be visiting him? Was Shuro trying again? Daisuke had turned off his phone after talking to Luz and telling his boss he would be gone for the next week. Walking into his apartment, he approached the door. He noticed how he didn’t hear a heart beating. Was it Simon? As he opened the door, the man on the other side was someone he did not recognize at all, although he did have some resemblance to Simon. He also got the demi-god spark. The man was dressed rather dapper and had two men behind him who seemed to have reached the uncanny valley with their blank stares that didn't seem to blink.
“Uh, hi…” Daisuke said, his voice scratchy. He wanted to slam the door but there was something compelling him to keep it open.
The man offered a smile, that behind it seemed not quite sincere. Daisuke witnessed it often when he’d interview some seriously unhinged people who were good at hiding that aspect from every day people. “I’m Nikolas Marvos. And you’re… Diesookay Tendo, right?”
“It’s DAI-skay,” Daisuke corrected patiently and he saw how Nico rubbed his shoes on the floormat. Daisuke widened the door to let them in. He wasn’t entirely sure why. “Please, remove your shoes…”
“Of course! My apologies, Daisuke…” Nico said as he slipped off his shoes and his servants did the same. “I never studied Japanese so my pronunciation may be a little off. Shinto Demi-god?” He laughed jovially at his joke. Daisuke nodded before answering, “Son of Amaterasu…” Nico gasped, sounding shocked, “A Solar deity… isn’t that dreadfully ironic.” Daisuke’s eyes flicked but he did not say anything further.
Feeling like he was sleepwalking, Daisuke shut the door and paused for a moment as he saw Nico take a seat in one of his living room chairs, “You don’t mind, right?” Nico said as his eyes flashed red for a moment.
Just as he registered the red flash and how odd it was, Daisuke felt as if strings suddenly attached to him, like a puppet. Next thing he knew, he found himself nodding and saying it wasn’t a problem. Then after that, he felt obligated to get something, like tea. It was hospitable. “Would you like anything?”
“Oh, thank you for asking! I would love a glass of blood, please. Preferably A -…” Nico said playfully. Daisuke stopped in his tracks and didn’t turn around. Nico continued, “That is a lot of feathers you have out in the balcony… I take it you are trying the ‘vegetarian route’, right? Does that quell your needs?” He doesn’t sound patronizing, he is just merely sounding like he was trying to be conversational.
Daisuke took it as patronizing and he snapped back, “What do you want?” It was one of the rare moments in time that Daisuke lost his usual polite tone, but he was hungry and tired. He was in no mood for Nico's comments.
Nico laughed a little, “A little bird told me that you refuse to give into your nature…” Daisuke turned around looking affronted but before he could say anything, Nico gave another command. “Have a seat… let’s talk about it…” Nico’s tone took on that a school guidance counselor would use. Daisuke followed through, not sure why. It felt like he wasn’t controlling himself.
Even more terrifying, he said easily and openly, “I don’t want to. I will fight it.” That was exactly how he felt. He rarely spoke so bluntly.
Nico sighed and smiled as if he saw a child say something adorable, “You don’t want to? You would rather look the way you do and eat off diseased pigeons than eat what you’re designed to eat?”
Daisuke curled one of his hands into a fist, “I don’t want to hurt someone like that…”
“Daisuke… listen, I don’t know if you know this but you don’t have a choice.”
“Yes, I do have a choice!”
“You don’t…” Nico looked at Daisuke’s seriously, his eyes flickering red again. Daisuke didn’t respond. “You see, my little brother recruited you to do a job for me which I will tell you what it is when the time comes. And you won’t, you can’t disobey me. Do you understand?”
“Yes,” Daisuke answered. He looked momentarily panicked as he realized how tightly wound these strings seemed to be because he absolutely did not want to say yes. He felt the magic and he began to realize that this Nikolas had some sort of magic power over him. This was all processing in the back of his mind and things didn’t look good. Not at all.
“You’ll learn to love it. The flow of the blood into your mouth. The feeling of your teeth sinking into the soft, soft flesh…” Nico replied playing it up, giving a fangy grin. It only widened when Daisuke looked conflicted. That did sound very good to the Son of Amaterasu. Nico coaxed the fires, “See, I can tell you had a taste once and I think what scared you the most was you enjoyed it…”
Daisuke shook his head and pleaded, his lips trembling out of hunger, “Stop… please let me go of this curse.”
“But there is no cure!” Nico’s eyebrows rose contorting his face into that of innocent surprise.
Nico’s psychological torture went on pause when the doorbell rang again. Nico perked up expectedly, “Oh yes, the guest I invited came right on time. “
“Who did you invite?” Daisuke asked forcefully, hoping it wasn't Shuro again, and was unable to stop Nico in time. After Nico opened the door, Daisuke craned his neck to see who was there. Whoever it was, they were alive. He could hear their heart beating. He grew excited, enough to jump to his feet. His stomach growled with anticipation, his lips curling back revealing his fangs as if his fangs knew there was the opportunity to feed.
“Pizza…” said the kid at the door who had to be no more than twenty. “Two large cheese pizzas for a… Mr. Tendo?”
“I didn’t order-“
“Oh yes, why thank you…. Come in, I have to get my wallet…” Nico cut off Daisuke cordially. When the kid stepped in, the servants closed the door behind him. The pizza delivery boy jumped when he heard the door close and looked back behind him. He smiled sheepishly, looking visibly nervous. Daisuke also felt himself just as nervous as the delivery guy. He seethed as he resisted the urge to tackle prey and drain him.
As Nico passed Daisuke, he took Daisuke’s chin in his hand and held it so they were looking straight eye to eye. His eyes had the red tinge to them again, as he told Daisuke in a low voice, “Give in to your hunger on the gift I just got you. Just let it go, Son of Amaterasu. Give in to the night and let go of the sun…You will stop when I say stop…”
Daisuke’s eyes dimmed and became feral as the beast overcame him. If he tried to recall it later, it would happen so suddenly that Daisuke wouldn't be able to put the pieces together easily. When Nico let go, Daisuke leaped at an absolutely terrified teen, the force knocked him to the ground onto Daisuke's nice white carpet. Daisuke quickly overpowered him and pinned him to the ground. Just as the boy was about to scream, one of the servants quickly produced a hankercheif and gagged him. He flailed but Daisuke wasn’t slowing down as he bit down on the boy’s neck and began to feed. He paused for a brief moment, to look up at the ceiling and give a satisfying moan. Having practically starved himself and eating for the first time since Luz’s blood, well, it was better than sex as far as Daisuke was concerned.
“See, now isn’t that better?” Nico replied as if talking to a child. He took a seat back in the arm chair, taking out his orb, played with it between his fingers as he watched Daisuke, bemused.
Daisuke didn’t pay attention to Nico. As far as he was concerned, it was just him and his prey. He sunk his teeth in again as he continued to drink, playing with the blood that came out with both his hands and his tongue. He felt like he was at a buffet where there were spare ribs. The blood felt like the sticky BBQ sauce (something that did not sound appetizing anymore) in between his fingers. He shifted and bit into a new part, the boy’s other shoulder, but this was not as ravenous as before. He slowed down a little bit as he was beginning to get a little full and more in control and not as ravenously hungry. The boy had long stopped struggling but whimpered looking rather pale.
Nico looked over smugly at Daisuke before saying, “You can stop now, Daisuke…” The younger vampire did as he was told. He felt much better, admittedly. He felt more aware. More in control. He stood up slowly, blood dripping down his chin, his hands feeling particularly damp and sticky. The boy was crying and whimpering through the gag. He did look like he was a particular mess, nearly ripped up. Nico appeared behind Daisuke and he tsked, “What a mess you made… see, this is what happens when you wait to feed. You lose control and do more unnecessary damage. I mean, look at this poor boy!”
“You told me to!” Daisuke snapped in a strained voice although he didn't think it mattered much. Part of him wanted to feed just like that, that side he was slowly becoming more familiar with.
Nico ignored Daisuke’s plea and looked to his servants, “Let’s get him out of here. Stephan, please continue to finish the rest of his deliveries.” He kneeled down in front of the boy, “It’s okay, kid. It will be over soon…” He took out a flask and poured it over him. The boy vanished. “Gregory, he will be at the mansion, make sure you do the usual…” The servants nodded and left.
Picking up the pizza box and taking a slice, Nico cheerfully offered it to Daisuke, “Want one?” Daisuke didn’t answer. He seemed to be shocked at looking at the bloodstained sweatshirt he had on while absent-mindedly sucking on his index finger. He almost felt kind of numb. He felt so much better after feeding but that poor boy was obviously in pain. Nico dropped a bit of his cheerful act and said, “What are your demi-god powers?”
“My strength is heightened in the sun and I have a sword that glows like the sun when I say ‘Hi-ken’,” Daisuke answered quietly. “What else do you want from me? You took everything else.”
“Your loyalty… which…” Nico made sure he was looking at Daisuke to make sure the spell held. “I will get. You will be loyal to me…” He smiled brightly again, “And if you try to starve yourself again, I will bring a child next time… Ciao!”
Nico showed himself out after that leaving Daisuke left to clean himself up and the spot of the floor he chose to feed on.
