WHO Sunny Dupont and Roddy Bonniman
WHERE Governors Island
WHEN Mon. May 21st
RATING PG
SUMMARY Mini: Pictures of a looooovely model.
STATUS Complete

Roddy didn't consider himself old-fashioned, it was just polite to ask a friend before spending an afternoon taking pictures of his girlfriend. Actually, Roddy was the most dependable person in the world for that, because, while he'd never tried it, he was fairly certain messing with a friend's girlfriend was a leg-losing offense. These are pictures for art, anyway, not that Roddy had any idea how Brady intended to include the photographs in his vision.

He'd asked Sunny to meet him at the pier for the ferry to Governors Island, which seemed like a good place to go. Water, boats, a park, castles, churches. It seemed like as good a place as any, as long as Sunny didn't mind the five minute ferry ride.

Roddy stood at the dock, just next to where you started to get onto the ferry. The camera around his neck blended in with similar (thought not as nice or expensive) cameras around the necks of tourists boarding the ferry. Not that there were a lot of tourists, on a wet Monday afternoon. Roddy wore a rain slicker and an umbrella to keep his camera dry. He checked his watch, though, frankly, with the weather he wouldn't be surprised if Sunny decided against showing up.

Rain made things cooler, which made Sunny happier. Her lineage afforded her resistance to cold, but made anything above room temperature horribly uncomfortable. She splashed along the dock to meet Roddy in a fairly good mood. With Eihwaz back in her possession and in her focus, things were looking up again. Motivation had returned. Yesterday she'd had an interview. Today she had pictures with Roddy. Who didn't like having pictures taken of themselves?

He'd politely requested she'd tone it down, which had made her roll her eyes. Death was serious. It was black, hazy, violent, and full of frothy red and the stark white of snapped bones to her. Why would she wear a lot of colour? Stupid Russian. She was as casual as she'd ever be for once. Her hair was brown and straight, her makeup minimal. He'd better appreciate it.

"Heeeey Roddy!" she said, coming up beside him and ducking under his umbrella. What? He was holding it, it was practically an invitation. "Seems like the right kind of day for this stuff, huh?"

He jumped a bit, not having been so enthusiastically greeted in... ever? Especially not while simultaneously having his personal space invaded. Well, it was wet out.

"Hello, Sunny," he said, able to put on his diplomatic smile despite is alarm. "Yeah, it'll certainly... be gray." But some parts would be lush and green, he thought, an interesting contrast. "You look nice. I thought we'd take the ferry to the island. It's a short ride, if you don't mind."

How... diplomatic of him to say she looked nice. She smiled and bobbed her head, then looked around them. A ferry ride full of tourists. Yay. Roddy certainly knew how to not have fun. Even in Belize, he'd hid under his palm tree most of the time. Sunny had mentally started calling it Camp Eeyore for the duration.

"So what kind of stuff did you have in mind?" she asked as they moved towards the ferry. "I learned a new trick the other day and I think it might look really cool, but..." Sunny shrugged her shoulders dramatically. "It might look a little weird with the weather like this. We'll see."

"I'm not entirely sure," he admitted, letting her get on the ferry ahead of him. "Pictures of you in various locations. Water, shore, boats, giant stone structures." He'd be taking pictures of Sunny, yes, but not only pictures of Sunny.

He walked them out along the outside of the boat along the railing, it was wetter, but he wanted pictures of water and boats so staying in where it was dry was not really an option. He did hand her the black umbrella, though, if she'd take it. It helped tone her down a bit.

"What sort of trick?" he asked, taking the lens off his camera as tourists continued to board the ferry.

She took the umbrella without much thought, watching him take off the lens of the camera. It was only after his words sunk in that he wanted pictures of boats that she was standing on a boat, something she hadn't done since Greece. She suddenly looked a bit stricken, and her stomach rolled.

"Oh, well." She pushed her hair away from her face distractedly and glanced around. Was it safe? She rapped a ringed knuckle on the railing. Was it safe? Of course it was. This wasn't Cloverfield. "Um. I can make things glow."

He looked up at her when she explained her trick. That was... well he supposed it'd be useful if she wanted to find something in the dark, like the bathroom or something. He looked away from her as the gangplank was removed from the ferry and the boat set slowly out into the water. It was only a five minute trip to the island, he'd have to take pictures quickly.

"You can literally make them glow? Or is it like how Felix makes people glow?" Roddy took a few steps away from her and raised the camera to his eye, finding her through the lens.

A five minute trip was more than enough time for the boat to be broken and sunk by a sea monster. She looked alarmed as the boat started to travel away from the dock and hung into the umbrella and railing tighter. When that didn't make her fully feel better, she closed her eyes.

"Like, glowing!" Was he really trying to have a conversation right now? "Like they're in the sun." Pause. "I even tried it on my lizard."

Roddy caught the alarmed look with his camera, but was in the mindset enough to see it more as a good picture and less as maybe they should talk about something else.

"I guess that makes sense. Your mother is a sun goddess, isn't she?" Hadn't he been told that or read it somewhere? "Did your lizard like it?"

"Yes," she answered tersely, both panicked and annoyed at once. Taking pictures, really? "And I don't know. He's just a lizard." A stupid, skittle throw-up looking lizard. Having her eyes closed made the the world feel like it was swaying unpleasantly. She opened them and was immediately alarmed to find land so far away.

She peered overboard, her grip on everything still knuckle-white. "It's the first time I've been on a boat since."

Roddy's shudder kept going. He moved around a bit, getting her discomfort from different angles. Though he did lower it when she revealed the reason for her discomfort.

"Oh," he said. He would have mentioned he'd asked her if it was okay, since he knew how things like that could trigger, but he supposed she might not have known it would trigger until now. "Do you want to go inside?" He paused. "Or do you feel like you might be sick?"

Inside wouldn't be better. They wouldn't be able to see Scylla - or any monster - coming. Her brain flips through the whole possible gory scenario, complete with scaled tentacles smashing through the inside of the boat and a slow, painful drowning. "No, I'll stay out here." If she went inside, she might throw up. On someone. Purposefully.

She let the umbrella lower to the ground and tilted her face up to the sky. It was sprinkling a little, and she felt a little better for the coolness on her face. "Have you ever seen someone die, Roddy?"

He took a few more pictures of her without the umbrella over her, with the gray, watery background and the increasingly distant shore. But at her question he stopped and looked up at her. Probably longer than he normally should have and returned his attention to the camera, though he didn't take any more pictures. He fiddled with it.

"Yes I have. A few people."

"I threw a cricket at Simon's doorframe and fried it," she blurts, suddenly aware how guilty she feels about snuffing out that poor creature's life. Well. That's alarming. And random. A beat of silence passes before she recomposes herself.

"Anyway. Violently? We saw a lot of men die that way. One was named Acacius. He reminded me a lot of Felix." She gazed down at the water, somber. "And then one day he got eaten."

There was a moment where Roddy wondered if the cricket was the death Sunny was doing all of this to remember, but he supposed it wasn't. That was right. The Odyssey.

"I would call it violent," he said, trying not to think about it anymore than he had to. Fire had come down from the sky. Roddy had fled in terror, but the terror had caught up to him. "My boss. And other men. And then more later, in the hospital."

He accidentally took a picture of his own hand. "How did he remind you of Felix?"

"He was really tall and tan and built.Just like Felix. Nice, too." She shrugged. "He didn't actually look much like him. His eyes were different." Felix had Baldr's eyes, and that is something she'd never be able to forget. "But he made me feel safe." Felix had made her feel safe, too, in December.

"And then he got ripped apart for something's dinner," she said blandly. At least Felix would have a more peaceful death.. if asphyxiation via anaphalectic shock could be called that. She blinked and turned around to look at the other side of the boat. They were already coming to the other side.

Roddy nodded along with her comparison of Felix and this man, who, Roddy was fairly certain, was not real. That was the interesting angle to this, on their side. Roddy's boss had been real, his death had been national news, Roddy had needed to decline comment several billion times. But Brady and Sunny were mourning for people who were not, technically, real. But their mourning was.

Roddy probably should not have thought about that while looking at her.

"If it's any consultation, the pain is usually enough to cause the person to blackout." Well, that's what had happened in his case. Technically, his leg had not been ripped off, but it had come close.

"Yy..." Again, what was that feeling? "One time I taped the refrigerator light so it'd stay off even when my mom opened the fridge. The housekeeper got in a lot of trouble."

Sunny paused again, looking left, then right. What the hell? She gave Roddy a strange, questioning look, brows furrowed. "No, that doesn't really help. We didn't pass out. We just had to watch."

He had meant the man might have, meaning he might not have felt pain for most of it. Not that Roddy liked thinking about it. Or his boss. Or his leg. He had trouble concentrating on his photographs, a problem realizing what he was doing to Sunny.

"You had a housekeeper?" he asked instead, still looking at her.

There really was no escaping this enormous weight of guilt. Sunny felt heavy and mired in the stuff, almost on the verge of tears. Her voice cracked when she spoke next. "Yeah, but, I, I... convinced my best friend to lick a buffo toad once. She started foaming at the mouth..."

Okay, Roddy figured out what was going on now. It was... weird... maybe he could avoid them ever mentioning it again. Ever. He cleared his throat and raised the camera back to his eye, capturing an image of her guilt.

"So do you want to visit the church or the castle first? When we get to the island. Or maybe try to get down toward the water's edge?"

Sunny paused to think very, very hard once the feeling had passed. Was she PMSing? Was her father around, being his childish self? Her sudden confessional moodswings were very vexing. But the feeling seemed to be gone for now.

"Let's go to the castle," she nodded, and finally peeled herself away from the railing. The ferry would be docking soon. "I kinda hate going into other churches besides the Immaculate Heart, anyway. I feel like my little pagan soul will just burn up, you know?"

He got that confession for free.
