Due to the possibility and probability of violent and adult situations, all players must be over the age of 18. By applying, you confirm that you are over 18.
Be active! Make friends! We have IC posting requirements, but everything always works better if you’re chatty OOC. You don’t have to be best buddies, but it helps to reach out. Don’t be afraid to talk to other players, and if you have any questions, ask a mod. We don’t bite. (Unless you ask.)
No drama. Yes, sometimes personalities clash. Sometimes you won’t agree with someone, or something will be written that you don’t like. But remember, we’re all adults here. Let’s act like it. If you have a problem that absolutely cannot be resolved by having a polite, mature conversation with the other player involved, ask a mod for help. We would much rather have you work it out yourselves first, but shit happens. Just… try not to let shit happen.
Let us know if there’s anything we, as mods, can do to make the game better. We’re open to feedback because at the end of the day, the goal here is to make the game fun for everyone. So if there’s anything we can change to make it better for you, tell us!
Application Rules:
Though we are an AU, we are accepting mutant characters from the Marvel Universe only. Characters can be adapted to fit the setting if you wish to bring in a character who isn't a mutant in canon, but we ask that you run your ideas by the mods before finalizing those power sets.
We currently have a character cap of six. That may change in the future, but for now, that's where we stand.
Beyond that, players with more than one character must have one character who is native to this reality and one who is being brought in from another. If you have four or more characters, we ask that at least two of them be native to this reality, to help make sure that this world is fairly firmly established.
If the moderators feel that a player is unable to handle a large number of characters, they reserve the right to deny a player’s request for additional characters.
This game is for canon characters only, no OCs. As it is an AU, you may take some liberties with canons (and use canons from more than just the 616 universe), but they must be canon characters.
You may not app a character who comes with an NPC child. If you want to play a child, you may app them as a separate character, but they must also be canon characters. If you have a character who is a parent, that history can still be part of their personal history, but the child itself may not be played in-game.
We allow and encourage you to use pretty bio sheets from elsewhere, but we do ask that you include the following information in your final character sheet:
Name Codename/Handle Hometown Age/DOB Occupation Relationship Status Sexual Orientation Family Powers and skills --at least two paragraphs detailing the characters powers and one detailing additional skills. Personality--at least two paragraphs giving a general idea of how your character interacts with others Appearance--at least two paragraphs describing what the character looks like, how they dress, distinguishing features such as piercings, tattoos, scars, etc. History--at least four paragraphs details the character’s history. If your character’s history overlaps with that of another character, you need to check with their player to see how things should be handled and to work out details.
OOC Info: Name: Messenger: (AIM preferred) Email: PB: (please make sure to check the list before choosing a PB!) Timezone:
Please refrain from posting anywhere but in the OOC community until you're approved. Please see below for a general list of steps that need to be taken to apply and then to get setup following approval.
Getting Started:
Make sure to read the rules included in this post as well as the game history.
Check the character wall and the PB list to make sure your choices are available. Post to the character wall to reserve your character/PB.
Fill out the application information listed above and post it into a character journal. If you wish, you may go ahead and use a custom profile as long as it includes the requested information. Comment to the character wall post with a link to the application. Make sure that even if it is posted as a journal entry, your bio is accessible through the IJ profile page
Along with the actual application, we require writing samples, so we can get an idea of how characters/players will fit in the game. If you have links to previous work (journal-based RP specifically), those are acceptable. If you're new to RPing or to this type of play (coming from say forum/twitter/fb games), we ask that you provide us with an in-character writing sample of 300-500 words.
The mods should get back to you within three days, but if things are hectic it may take a bit longer. Feel free to give us a nudge if you haven’t heard back within a week.
Once you have been approved, request membership to xmo_ic and xmo_ooc coms.
Reply to the Friend All Button, Contact List, and PB posts as needed in order to ensure that necessary information is added.
Posting Rules:
Please be mindful of grammar, spelling, etc. We’re not grammar nazis, and we all understand that mistakes happen--and that commas are tricksy bitches--but there’s still a minimum level of cohesion we’d like to maintain in the actual writing. As an example any text speak--unless contextually warranted--should not be posted. Also all IC threads should be in third person, past tense.
Even though conversations don't necessarily follow a pattern, we ask that you maintain a consistent posting order in threads, so as not to inadvertently skip other players. If you are given permission by the other character's player, you may skip them if necessary, though we ask that this be kept to a minimum unless there are extenuating circumstances (needed for plot purposes, player unavailable to post, player asks you to post before them, etc.).
Do not use your character’s powers against another character, move them, have something hit them, etc. without their permission. Keep in mind that some characters--telepaths, empaths, etc.--have a power that may allow them access to certain information. If you’re in doubt whether something might fall under this heading, just work it out with the player and a mod if necessary. This also covers not using player knowledge in character.
Journal entries are not mandatory, but aside from existing as actual character to character communication on the school's network, they can be used for first person storytelling, journaling, letters, transmission logs, etc. 3rd Person posts should be made once a week.
Posts should be formatted as follows:
Please tag posts with the date and characters involved. If the post has been created in another setting--such as a G-doc--and is then posted into IJ, please also tag it as log. Place any nsfw or triggering concerns in the warning area. Also posts involving graphic sexual situations or violence should be friend-locked. If these are things you do not wish to read, please avoid the tagged threads. If you need a summary of the events in case it might be important for your character, please let a mod know so we can provide you with one.
Keep in mind that there may be IC ramifications for IC actions. As an example, if your character decides to break into the inner sanctum of a place like the Hellfire Club and start attacking people, your character is probably going to be critically injured if not just outright killed. If you’re concerned about what the IC consequences might be, please contact a mod prior to taking said action for advice.
Any plans that may potentially have an effect on the entire game must be run by the mods before they're carried out. We want players to be a part of plotting, but we also want to know ahead of time if (for example) a character is going to violently manifest on-property so that we can prepare for it, as well as provide guidance in terms of whether or not it's something that the game as a whole will be receptive to.
If you want something major to have happened in game, it needs to be played out or at least mentioned in an IC thread rather than simply discussed in meta. Anything that may come up later or have an effect on other characters or game as a whole down the line must be logged in some way. This, of course, does not apply to historical information that involves your character’s interactions with other characters. That should be worked out ahead of time between yourself and the other player to ensure everyone is on the same page.
Please refrain from using phonetic accents in your writing. It is acceptable to occasionally chop off the ends of words using apostrophes, but do not use, for example, "zhat" instead of "that." Accents can be conveyed very well through use of regional slang and narrative descriptors.
We love personal drama and fluff as character development. Who doesn't? But we also love plot. It's important that every character participate in action and mission-based plots, including (but not limited to) game-wide mod controlled plots. Players are more than welcome (and completely encouraged) to play out their own action threads, but participation in game-wide plots is essential. If you just want to play house or write smut all the time, this is probably not the game for you. If you want to use those scenarios as character development and also write characters kicking ass? Welcome aboard!
