When: Friday, September 7th, 2007
Where: Xavier's Tech Lab
What: Checkin' in
Status: in progress
Rating:  PG-13

"So, you're back, you want a party?" Jon spoke into the metal casing he was in the process of taking apart, not bothering to look back at James. Forge didn't have time to waste on someone that wasn't going to listen.

James stood a few feet back from the older man, arms crossed, not bothering to hide his annoyance. "Look, I was just lettin' you know I'm back." If Forge didn't care if he was at the mansion, then that was fine with Warpath. "Don't know why I even came down here."

"How long?" Jon continued to pretend like no one else was in the room. "You almost made it to a year once, but last time, what? A month? Three weeks?" Forge couldn't help but feel more responsible for the other Natives running around the mansion and he couldn't help but be frustrated with Warpath's lack of focus.

"Hey, excuse me if I don't feel like becoming a fixture around here. When's the last time you left, 1974?" James didn't need this crap. He had other things to do than spend all his time at Xavier's; the X-Men weren't the army, at least not the last time he checked.

Forge turned finally and acknowledged the massive man standing in the lab with him. "You made a commitment to this team, something you've never fully understood."

"Thanks Dad."

"Thank Mother Earth I'm not your father, I would have beat some sense into you a long time ago." Jon said as he stood from his stool and moved toe to toe with the Apache. He tilted his head up to make eye contact with the younger man. "Say you're going to stay. Stay and figure out something you're good for, besides punching things. Or you can just leave now."

Forge's bluntness took James off guard for a moment. "Fine, I'll stay." Warpath said without thinking, mostly just a knee-jerk reaction to being challenged. "But I contribute just as..."

"Oh, you can break things with the best of them. But you'll need more than that if you want a real life James." Jon backed off from the other man, glad to see he was getting through his thick skull.

"You want me to get a job?" He turned from Forge and moved further into the room. He sighed and mouthed to himself 'I've made a huge mistake.'

"Yes, do something besides fight. This is a school." Jonathon Silvercloud knew James was ruled by his emotions and he needed to learn discipline if he wasn't just going to end up like his brother. Forge wasn't going through that again. 'I've made a huge mistake.' Literally.

"Yeah, Jimmy. Damn. Make love, not war." Which might or might not have been difficult for a dude called 'Warpath'. But Troy hadn't heard the entire conversation, nor did he really care to. He had enough of Forge on his ass on a daily basis. He felt no need to share Forge's quality nag-time with others, too. Which is why he intended to lighten the mood.

He had no idea what the older man was working on, and by the annoyed/confused expression on James' face, he assumed the bigger guy was just as clueless. So, he decided to talk about something other than whatever boring crap Jon was doing. "You should get a job," he directed at Warpath, giving him an encouraging slap across the gut before slinging himself backwards onto a stool that was at the end of Forge's work table. "Does bouncing count as not fighting?" Okay, so he'd been listening at the door. But these two fuckers were dudes you didn't want to piss off. Coming downstairs at the mansion meant dealing with Superman, an assassin, a Nam vet and at the moment, Warpath. You had to pick your battles. He leaned forward on the table and flicked a few troublesome odds and ends out of his way so he could lean his arms on the surface.

As demeaning and unsavory as Zap found local strip clubs (or any, for that matter - Businessman's Special! Mercedes, stage four! Ten hotwings and a pitcher of beer - five dollars!), bouncing might be right up James' alley. Hell, there were even non-strip clubs he could work at, locally. "That's not a bad idea, you know. And think of the perks. All the cheese sticks and hotwings you could eat." Though, she supposed none of the three men in her company thought of fried snacks when they pondered strip clubs. She placed the small mallet Forge had asked for nearly ten minutes ago (well... he'd started nagging. Who wanted to hear that?) on the work surface. "It was buried in the closet."

"Like your nephew." Troy interjected, with a pleasant smile.

"More like you, Troy."

"Burn. I forget that shit sometimes." So, he was 'with' his roommate. That didn't make him gay. That just made him Omen!gay. "But it isn't like we're keeping it a secret. I think Booger and Amus-" WHACK! "Ow! Damn, half-breed."

Her hair started to obtain that familiar static lift, and Troy was looking a little watery.

"Stand down! Both of you." Forge wasn't in a the mood to deal with Troy and Zap's (might as well be) sibling rivalry. "Or so help me..." He didn't need to continue his thought, that usually got the point across.

Jon shot a disgruntled look toward Troy. "For the last time Redshaw do not call Pallaton a half-breed." Forge looked around the room at his three youths and couldn't help but think they all had so much to learn. But he wasn't about to hold a group session at the moment. He turned back toward Warpath, "Not just a job James, a purpose. Find a path besides war." His face was stern but his eyes pleaded with the younger man.

"And as for you two..." Jon said turning to face the Zap and Troy. "Both of you are going to help James find his calling. Let Dani know too, I want all three of you to help your brother out." Jon finished his statement with an almost wicked smile. "If you all don't kill each other, you just might learn something."

Oh good, Troy was here. James rolled his eyes as the mouthy Navajo spoke. He kept his own mouth shut though as Troy mentioned bouncing. So... he'd been a bouncer before. What, did everyone know? Soon Zap entered, this wasn't going to be good for Forge's blood pressure. As the two bickered, James contemplated making a break for it but Forge's battle hardened eyes were fixed on him, like he knew what Jimmy was thinking.

The older man finally broke up the two and pleaded with James one last time. The emotion in Jon's eyes rang as clearly in Jimmy's head as the words that came out of the older mutant's mouth. He nodded to Forge, earnestly, he would try his hardest to do as the older man asked.

"What..." Really, was this the time for a group activity? James wondered as Jon assigned Troy and Zap to his case. "What the hell does Troy know about any of this? He just sits around and eats Cheetos." James had accepted Forge's challenge, so he felt he was entitled to some mild back-talk.

Stand down? Geez. Troy relaxed his butt back against the stool he'd been leaning on and broke eye contact with Zap after Jon had muttered 'or so help me'. The Navajo did his best to hold in a smirk when Forge added 'for the last time'. Nothing was ever 'for the last time' with Troy. Not until he said so, anyway. And it wasn't like he was the only one practicing prejudices. Forge was still calling her Pallaton. Bitch had practically been a Murphy for a decade. Can't let the white man put you down...

Then, Troy clamped his hand down over his face. Find his calling!? He'd just suggested a prime employment opportunity to the man. Why was his job not done? 'Might just learn something'. Torrent felt a weight on his narrow shoulders that he was sure he didn't want to shrug off. Forge was probably right... James, however, was not. "While you were dicking around in tattoo parlors, I got a business degree, 'hole. Probably took the same amount of time that piss-ass mural you call a 'back-tat' did."

Zap too lowered her eyes when Forge barked at them. She hated making him angry. But Troy pushed her over the edge so easily. It was why she preferred avoiding him rather than not. Pallaton. She sighed. Despite changing every record in the school, her social security information, her driver's license... she was still 'Pallaton'. But James was already dishing out back-talk, so she kept her lips sealed.

No, of course, Jon. It wasn't like she had a busy schedule or anything. She was perfectly fine with dropping everything and helping Warpath finding something to do other than get stabby. "Troy, it's self-expression. No one tells you that your songs are 'piss-ass'. And sometimes, they are," she spoke in a tone that told him to shut up and not take offense. Even though he most certainly would take offense. "He just got back you know. How was he supposed to know you'd moved your butt from your computer chair?"

"Self-expression?" Troy's teeth clenched, and he breathed out slowly through his nose. "And for your information, I didn't move my butt from the computer chair. Most of the lessons were computer-based." He smirked, which erupted into a semi-embarrassed laugh.

Zap shook her head and gave a laugh herself, then rested her fingertips on the workspace, "All right, let's let him unpack before we plot out his entire life, eh?" Zap smiled up at James before she gave him a whack to his arm, just behind his elbow and gestured that she was leaving (and that it was probably best that they follow). Jesus, he was hard as a rock.

The old medicine man was pleased that his assignment had not caused too much damage. Mostly thanks to Zap playing the role of peacemaker between the two other men. Both James and Troy were much too prideful for their own good; hopefully some time around Zap and Dani would do them some good. Forge made eye contact with her after she began taking charge of the situation and offered her a wink of encouragement. "Yes, good. See James, you're in great hands. Now, I think it's time to leave this old tinkerer alone. Too much excitement for one day..." Something like that, anyway. As he spoke, Jon moved back to his work bench.

James took a step forward as Troy spoke, but thankfully Zap started talking and put Troy back in his place. He wasn't going to take any of Troy's crap; it was bad enough Forge was forcing Troy to 'help' James. "Well at least you have a degree," Warpath said to Troy after he came clean about his business degree. James then shot a look at Forge, 'see, I can be civil' written all over his face. Zap whacked him and Forge dismissed them, it was time to get out of here. "Yeah, I need think about some things." Jimmy realized that was the first time in a long time he'd actually meant that. Stupid old man. "Later, Sir." Jimmy produced a half hearted salute and made for the door.
