free food
He'd only meant to cook some for himself but as doing that was to practically make a mess for nothing, he decided he could just as well give the others a little treat.

"Treat."

It was instant macaroni and cheese he'd found in the cupboard but he had done the effort of cooking everything up plus adding some meaty bits and some other spices (the stuff from McCormick). It wouldn't taste much better but it definitely looked more presentable and less like something you just popped into the stove and let cook for half an hour or something.

On the table, he placed everything else: more McCormick, more cheese (Parmesan), more bacon bits and because some people might be weird, ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. Bread was being toasted on the kitchen counter now and if they wanted it garlic, they could just grab the garlic butter from the fridge.

If it was still there.

Stepping out, he called towards the empty hallway, "Heeey." And with a pan and a spatula, Kevin started to bang the two together so that the sound sort of echoed through the walls. "Lunchtime, c'mon."

Gloria had actually already been on her way to the kitchen. She’d gotten in late, having worked a late, or early shift, depending on whom you were asking. Once she’d gotten back to the house, she went straight to bed and hadn’t another thought about feeding herself. That was probably a bad habit she needed to break, but for now, sleep was more important than grabbing a muffin on the way in. When she woke, the hunger pangs were strong, and so, this was why she was on her way to the kitchen.

Just before she rounded the corner, the clamoring of dishes rang through the house, and then she heard Kevin yell after it. Making a face, as she wasn’t fully awake just yet, Gloria took a minute to let the attack of the makeshift lunch bell pass over her before continuing to the kitchen. Pausing at the door, she leaned on the frame and just took in the scene at the table.

“What, is it family time?” Seriously. Moving into the kitchen, Gloria opened up one of the cabinets before glancing back at the pot of, whatever it was. This looked like a job for a bowl, so she grabbed a few and set all but one on the counter, the keeping the last for herself. Moving to hover over the pot of mac n stuff, she raised a brow before looking over to Mr.Sunshine. “So…what exactly did you put in this?”

Some kind of racket. Kurt looked up from the old drawing table he'd found and claimed his workspace in the library. The Brotherhood was fortunate Erik had found such well-to-do... hosts... for their extended stay in Connecticut. It was only fair they made the best of it all, including the old design tools the master of the house had left behind.

Muffled calls of "lunchtime," begged him to investigate, so he dropped his pencil and went for the door. He'd been working on a new layout for his pamphlets, something more striking to suit the urgency of their cause, but somehow more earnest and friendly too. It was a hard balance to maintain.

The aroma hit his nose and made his mouth water. His stomach grumbled, reminding him how it'd been neglected since early last night. He followed the scent with caution. Who would be cooking for them all?

Seeing Kevin, spatula and pan in hand, put fears at ease. He wasn't an Emeril Lagasse or even a Rachael Ray, but Kevin was good in the kitchen. That meant good food. Kurt cracked a smile and made sure to pat the chef on the back as he made his way into the kitchen.

"Just like mom used to make." He ogled the macaroni hungrily. It was a lie - he couldn't remember Raven ever picking up a spatula - but the sentiment was there. It was nice to have someone actually cook for them.

Smile growing by the moment, he helped himself to a bowl. Yes, he may have edged by Gloria, but he did it in the nicest way possible. Heck, if she let him he'd switch bowls with her and fill up the second one for himself.

"If you want to call it family time, then sure," said Kevin after Gloria, shrugging as he retreated towards the kitchen with her but stopping until the table to just...stand there, slightly crossing his arms so that his sides were guarded by the spatula and the pan. "I put in a lot of things. You name it, it's there."

When he felt the hand on his back, a little glance was given to Kurt and he found himself giving a small nod...just an action to tell the other that he'd acknowledged the congratulatory (if that was the word for it) pat given to him. Well, at least these people were getting their bowls and deciding that his cooking was, well, lunch enough.

He'll follow after them. He didn't want to look 'needy', see. Somehow, the little line Gloria and Kurt made, holding bowls and waiting for turns, reminded him of a scene in a movie depicting poverty and the free food that was given to them.

"Where are the others?"

Gloria didn't know how she felt about a little bit of 'everything' being in that pot. There really must have been better words to describe what he'd done to the perfectly good box of cheese and noodles than suggesting he'd put lots of 'things' in it. "Huh," she continued to hover over the pot in wonder until Kurt made his way into the kitchen. She was happy to step aside and let him dig in first. It wasn't that she didn't trust Kevin's cooking - that really wasn't it at all. The contents of the pot just looked suspicious. Alas. She was really friggin hungry.

When Kurt finished filling his bowl, she gave herself a spoonful and resigned herself to leaning on the counter - after grabbing a spoon form the drawer to eat with, of course. When Kevin spoke up again, asking about the others, Gloria shrugged, stirring at the mac n stuff in her bowl. "Dunno. Sleep, probably. Or at work. Or doing other things."

Kurt deftly stole a spoon from the drawer as Gloria went to close it. He was doing his darnedest to get in her way today. Completely accidental, of course.

"More for us, then?" He happily took a heaping bite.

Remy had been creeping down the floor of the hallway. He wasn't really on a mission. He was carrying a heavy box while in shadow form, trying to build up his stamina. But he quickly dropped it when he heard the commotion in the kitchen.

Leaving the box of lord knows what from the garage - brass andirons, doorstops, old iron boot scrapers - along the wall, Remy jumped back into human form. Striding into the kitchen, he smirked. Yeah, usual lunchtime crowd.

At least, it looked like lunch. Smelled like lunch. But you couldn't be too sure around here. He noticed Kevin with the pan. "What you got in the pot, Kev?"

Next time he does lunch, Kevin ought to prepare a list of possible answers to respond to questions like that. He could either tell the truth, offer a really disgusting alternative (like maybe brain peanuts in yellow goo for this one) or basically say something else like, 'Your Mom'. It could get a little too redundant for him.

Ting!

"Food," he said anyway to Remy, setting the pan and spatula aside as he approached the oven and slid out a plate from the cupboard to place the toasted breads on. He set it between Gloria and Kurt so they could help themselves to it before he grabbed his bowl and spoon and proceeded to fill it up with mac n' cheese.

He went over to the end of the table after -- that one closest to Gloria and Kurt and he sat there, grabbing the plastic jar of bacon bits and giving it a little shake over his lunch. "Help yourself to it."

"Food."

"Well that narrows it down," Remy replied. He eyed the pot discriminately. Coming from Louisiana, the land of Cajun cuisine...he wasn't exactly impressed. Nonetheless, he took up Kevin's offer. Hunger won out.

Remy spooned out his own dish of yellow goo macaroni and cheese. But he went to the cupboard for something extra that Kevin forgot to put out on the table - Tabasco sauce. No dish was really complete with out it. Remy doused his meal with it and stirred it in.

He wasn't one to sit down at the table with all the rest. Instead, he chose to lean against the counter and hold his bowl while he ate.
