a trip to the vet is just like the doctors. except with more fur. [scott/alex/jean]
Medland Veterinary Hospital was a good fifteen minute drive from 1407 Greymalkin lane. They weren't particularly cheap, either, but they were a vet hospital, so they were open all night seven days a week, and when your boyfriend was stuck in wolf form with a possible broken leg, Jean didn't really have any choice but to pop him in the back of the SUV and drive him on down.

Of course, Scott was a little heavy in wolf form, and when he was in pain and injured, he tended to be a little more grumpy than he normally was. So Jean took along company to help. Alex was stronger than she was while she had to look like her normal self, and unfortunately when the vet hospital had a fairly extensive file on your dog because of his habit of getting into trouble, you had to be a little consistent in what you looked like when you turned up for the examination.

Jean pulled up into the parking lot trying to find a space as close as possible to the front door. Scott had been stubborn before they'd left, insisting on walking around on his broken leg instead of sucking up his pride and letting himself be carried. But Jean was going to have none of that while they were here in public. If they were at the vet, he had to act like a dog. A well behaved dog who was in pain because they thought he got hit by a car. So he would be carried into the vet's office.

"Thanks for coming with me, Alex." She said unbuckling her seatbelt, looking over her shoulder pointedly at the trunk, where her fiance was hopefully lying down.

It was an interesting feeling, the combination of things running through Scott's mind at the moment. Scott was having pride issues. He didn't want to be carried anywhere, thank you very much, much less by Alex. Even if it took him five minutes to get from the parking lot to the office itself, he wanted to walk it himself. He'd done it at the mansion, he would do it here. On the same token, he was glad to finally be here, at the vet. There was no denying the fact that his right hind leg hurt every time he put weight down on it and he suspected that if it wasn't outright broken, it was at least fractured. Possibly in more than one place. Yes, he was plenty thankful that Jean and Alex had driven him down here (not that taking care of this at home wouldn't have been about ten times better).

The wolf on the other hand, was more than annoyed. He was feeling downright snappish and more than a bit aggravated at his current situation. He was annoyed at Jean (she'd insulted him the other day and he'd heard) and he was annoyed with Alex (he'd insulted Jean and was about to carry him). He didn't want to 'act like a dog'. He wanted to walk into the vet, have his leg set, and then walk back out.

And then perhaps eat something bloody.

Of course, he realised, there were going to be drugs involved (he wasn't going to sit still to have his leg reset without them) and thus, he likely wasn't going to walk (or limp) out of the office. This only served to make him angrier with the situation in general. Perhaps what annoyed him the most was that it had happened in battle. A battle his team should have won. He was already blaming it on himself.

Scott growled deep in the back of his throat when Jean turned to look at him from the front of the car. He was laying down, but it was under duress and only because he knew Jean was already angry enough with him as it was. They hadn't had that argument yet and Scott was not looking forward to it.

He growled again, ducking his head to look away from Alex and Jean and putting his paw over his snout.

Jean hopped out of the car and closed the door behind her with a thump. Perhaps she had slammed it just a little bit, but it was not intentional. She was not really that mean. She circled around the car, keys in hand, and popped the trunk carefully, in case Scott had moved and was leaning up against the door.

"Okay, we're here." She said, gently brushing the fur behind his neck. As annoyed as she was with him now, and no matter what fights it would result in, right now her priority was just to get her fiance back on his feet. Or rather, well enough so that he could morph back to normal so he'd have the physiology that Jean knew how to look after. Perhaps she'd enrol in a course on animal first-aid. There had to be something somewhere she could do.

"Remember, puppy, you're Scott the wolf-husky cross. We think you've been hit by a car." She said quietly, looking him in the eyes. She wasn't patronising him, just making sure he knew the story and how to act. He sometimes could be a little unreliable as a dog, what with that brain damage and all. "It'll all be over soon and we'll be home and you can sulk as much as you like."

He didn't like it when she called him Puppy, there was nothing he could do about it at the moment. For the first time since the protest he didn't pull away from Jean and he did his best to suppress the urge to growl. Instead he moved his paw away from his face and gave her something that resembled a nod. He licked her hand and then put his hand back down.

He didn't make any attempt to sit up. Call him petty, but he didn't feel like making it any easier for his brother to pick him up.

Alex just gave Jean a bit of a salute in response to her thanks, getting out of the car himself. He couldn't lie, taking Scott to the vet was always a novelty experience. He loved his brother, but honestly, it was amusement that motivated these trips for him than brotherly love. At least he wasn't calling him puppy. "Don't encourage him," he said finally, rounding the vehicle to come to the back to retrieve his transformed brother. "He already spends half the day being broody for one reason or another." Don't act like he's lying!

Hands stuffed in his pockets, Alex leveled a look onto his brother. He knew Scott wasn't going to make this easy for him, but Alex wasn't exactly helping himself, either. Maybe if he stopped with the jokes. At least he hadn't given him the doggy bowl, yet. He probably wasn't going to appreciate that much. Even if he'd decorated it all nice, just for him. Scott could be so ungrateful, sometimes. "You know, if you don't cooperate at least a little, your leg is going to hurt a lot more," he told him as he reached, actively trying to figure out how to pick him up in the least painful way possible.

He had a point there, Scott had to admit. He did so by finally pushing himself up on his three good legs and actually did attempt to walk forward slightly in the trunk so that Alex could easily get a grip on him. His leg was in enough pain already and neither the wolf or human side of him really wanted to increase it.

As much as he hated to admit it, it actually hurt to walk even those few short steps in the trunk to meet his brother. Scott looked decidedly put out when he looked up at him. Giving Alex a giant lick across his cheek leaving him dripping didn't even help.

It would have, normally.

Jean stepped back from the car, to give Alex enough room to manoeuvre and Scott space, so that he could both appreciate the fresh air and be safe from accidentally bumping into her and potentially making the injuries worse or more painful, which she really didn't want to do.

There wasn't much she could do now to help, so she went and fetched her handbag from the back seat, and her jacket, which wasn't so much for practicality but for appearances. Her hand was a little cold from where Scott had licked it but she couldn't bring herself to wipe the saliva off on her slacks. While she was out of sight of the two brothers she wiped her eyes and nose on the sleeve of her jacket before locking up the rest of the car.

She then resumed position next to the trunk so she could lock that up once Scott had been lifted out and was safely inside the vet's office.

He was pleased when Scott finally decided to cooperate. Getting an arm around him, and hoisting him up into both of his arms. If this wasn't awkward already, Scott made it even more so when he decided to show his love by licking him across the face. Grumbling and mumbling to himself, he made sure he had a good hold before turning away from the car. "That was unnecessary," he said through clenched teeth, but he managed to ignore the urge to make his brother uncomfortable or induce any extra pain. He started making his way toward the office, stopping at the door, since his hands were full, and he couldn't open it himself. "You'll get yours, later." He doesn't care if your leg is broken.

Scott looked as smug as a wolf in pain could sitting in his brother's arms. At the moment he simply refused to believe that he would be 'getting his'. Alex was all talk. He barked impatiently at the door, perhaps not acting completely dog-like, but he was anxious to get inside to get this all over with and the door wasn't just going to mystically open on its own.

Or, no, maybe it was. Scott stopped barking and gave a doggy grin to the receptionist who'd heard the racket he was making and buzzed open the door.

Normally he'd have jumped from Alex's arms and walked the rest of the way, but it was slightly impossible at the moment and he had to resist the urge.

He just really wanted to get into the doctor's office. Now.

Jean locked the trunk and followed behind Alex. She had her hands shoved in her pockets and before she had the chance to pull the doors open they opened of their own accord, letting a rush of warm heated air flush out the door.

She slipped inside after Alex and Scott and headed straight towards the receptionist. Elanor, the name badge on her chest said. Jean gave a pained, forced smile, as she began to craft their lie of a cover story. It wasn't like they could tell the truth and still be guaranteed medical aid. "I'm sorry we didn't call ahead, but it's an emergency. We think he's been hit by a car. I'm pretty sure his leg is broken," She nodded towards Scott, who at that point in time should've been doing his best to look wounded and pathetic. She didn't hold the glance with him for too long, and turned her attentions back to the receptionist, who had a frown of distaste on her face.

"The amount of animals I see through here hit by cars..." She muttered, and tapped away at the computer in front of her. "You've been here before?" She asked.

"Yes, I'm Jean Grey. My dog's name is Scott."

"Scott Grey. Right... Looks like this isn't the first time." The receptionist looked up at Jean with a raised eyebrow and Jean had the good sense to look abashed.

"We fixed the fence where he escaped last time but he tunnelled another hole elsewhere. You'd think he'd learn, but he likes to run free, chasing the neighbour's cat... you know."

"It's all right, it happens." The receptionist stood up and fetched a clip board. She stepped out from behind the desk and beckoned for both Jean and Alex holding Scott to follow after her. "I'll take you to the examination room. The vet will be along in a few minutes. While you're waiting, I'd like you to fill out this form as best you can."

"Of course."

The examination room wasn't particularly big. There was a bench in the middle, well above the level of Jean's waist, and several cupboards lined the walls, which were painted a blanket off-white colour. There were a few posters for pet insurance and diagrams of the canine and feline anatomy which Jean had seen and memorised during the many other previous visits they'd undertaken. There was only one seat in the corner, but Jean was quite happy standing. If Alex wanted it, it was his.

Alex really couldn't wait to get Scott home. All he'd be able to do is growl and howl or whatever. No chasing after him. Not until he was healed at least, but maybe he'd forget about his decorative bowl and the steak and gravy he'd totally planned for him! Maybe he'll throw in some rice. Standing there as Jean spoke to the woman, he must have looked pretty bored. Which probably meant he didn't seem very concerned for the animal in his arms, but really, it wasn't his fault he was no good at lying. This is why Jean was doing the talking, and he was doing his best not to fumble around with Scott, even though he swore he was going to lose his grip sooner or later.

When they were finally allowed into the examination room, Alex gladly set Scott down on the examination table before shaking his arms out, and trying to swat all the fur off of his shirt. "I think maybe you should brush him when we get home," thank you for shedding all over him. After getting as much of it off of himself as he could, he just leaned up against one of the counters, arms crossed over his chest, one ankle over the other. Jean could sit. Alex was raised better than that.

Scott settled down on the table, happy to be out of his brother's arms. He'd been able to feel the grip slipping a bit and at least he was on solid ground now. He'd landed on his back leg and he had to pull it out from underneath himself. He let out a small whine of pain, though he supposed it was alright given that he was supposed to be acting like a 'real' dog anyway. He supposed he could, easily enough, if he simply surrendered to all of the wolf's instincts that constantly bumped around in his brain, but Scott wasn't at all fond of that particular idea.

He liked his human brain, thanks. Though, he couldn't help but agree with and encourage the happiness the wolf felt at the suggestion of Jean brushing him. It sounded rather pleasant, actually, if you asked him. His ears perked up a bit and he looked over at Jean hopefully.

"Ms. Grey?"

Well that was a killjoy. Scott jerked his head towards the door where the doctor had only just entered. She was wearing a white lab coat which he was sure to shed all over by the time this visit was over with, and carrying a clipboard which he assumed had the details of all the other times he'd had to come in for this sort of thing. There hadn't been many, but whenever his hind legs were injured it was off to the vet. In a transformation dealing with all out joint reversal a break was only made worse in the process. It was simply best for him to remain a wolf, giving the bone time to begin knitting back together before he attempted becoming human again.

"I'm Doctor Lewis, and this must be Scott? I think I remember you from last year." Yes, Scott remembered her too. Had he been human he might have apologised for kicking and biting at her the last time she'd tried to stick a thermometer in him. In his defense, he hadn't been expecting it. "Another broken leg? Rambunctious thing, aren't you?"

Scott nodded.

Jean popped the clipboard and pen she'd been given down onto the counter to the side. It was nothing so important that couldn't be filled out later. Instead she buried her hands in the scruff of his neck, as it seemed that he needed reminding that he was a canine. Nodding to the doctor was her job, Scott, not his.

"He's a puppy at heart." She said with a nod, stroking him a little. "He saw the cat and bolted, even though we yelled at him to stop. A car came around the corner, didn't see him... I'm thinking once he's better I'll sign him up for an obedience school."

He did need a bit of a brush. She thought to herself. One of the hands she had buried in his scruff had come away covered in fur. If he was going to be stuck in this form for a week, maybe more, then he would definitely need to be brushed before he was allowed up on the bed.

No nodding, right. He dropped his head down back onto the table and decided to just be content with Jean running her hands through his fur. He was pretty sure she would go back to being mad at him as soon as they left. Best to take what he could get now.

"It would be a good idea," Dr. Lewis said, giving Scott a short pat on the head before glancing down at his hind section. "The right back leg? I see he's keeping off of that one. We can take a few X-Rays and have a look. How does that sound, Scott?"

He was good this time, and didn't nod. He barked instead, figuring that was alright. She'd said his name, it would have caught a normal dog's attention, right?

The doctor looked over at Jean and Alex. "If you could just get him to put the injured leg right there, we can get this done pretty quickly." She smiled and turned around to the cabinet, reaching up to take down the heavy blanket used for X-Rays.

Scott figured he might as well make it easier for the other two, flattening himself out and pushing out his leg as much as he could.

Jean looked at the leg now she had the chance. It wasn't bent into any particularly gross angles which was good as it meant that surgery wouldn't be required. He shouldn't have to spend too much time stuck in this form before he could shift back into normal-him. And then Jean could give him a piece of her mind, and actually have him able to attempt to explain himself in a language she could understand.

She stroked Scott's neck a little more, as any normal dog owner would do to keep their dog calm.

"I'm glad it's just the leg. It could be much worse."

"Mmmhmm." Holding a heavy gray cloth in her hands, Doctor Lewis turned back around to face Scott. She draped the cloth over his entire flank, leaving just his right back leg uncovered.

"He seems relatively well behaved," she commented on the fact that Scott had stayed absolutely still for the process and didn't move as she gently felt his leg. She looked at both Jean and Alex. "If you'd step out with me? We'll take the X-Rays and look at them out there. If a brace or cast is needed we'll set the bone and give him a sedative if necessary, and we can put it on right away. You can just follow me." The doctor led the way back to the door.
