Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current location:District X
Current music:Bustle of the streets
Entry tags:kurt wagner

Where: District X
When: Midday, some day shortly after the fray.
Who: Kurt and anyone who happens to be around.
Doing What, Exactly? Let's find out together!

The "schoolyard rumble"  had, no doubt, furthered the cause of mutant superiority. It was a sign of strength broadcast nationwide and would embolden others to stand up. Hopefully they would carry that momentum forward and homo superior would continue its assault on the sapien race. If they did not rally behind the cause, the ungifted would use the incident to grind them into the ground.

Kurt knew the urgency their victory had won them. It was not enough to rest on their laurels, nor would it suffice to have a handful of mutants carry the rest on their ascension as dominant species. Now it was crucial to muster all the support possible. The Brotherhood's biggest activist was much more aggressive in his duties than usual.

The streets of Mutant Town were relatively busy this afternoon. It forced Kurt to hand out his fliers rapid fire, to the point where he was debating the merits of simply dropping the fliers from the top of the nearest building. He tried to make contact with everyone who would accept his handout.

"...Here.... Please... Thank you! .... Enjoy... Cafe on the corner, 9 o'clock tonight!"

"Just give it a read, and... oomph!" he grunted. He'd turned abruptly, straight into someone. "So sorry about that. Please, take a... Oh. You." It struck him now who he was speaking to. He smiled his absolute winningest.

"Don't suppose I could interest you in a coffee and a chat? On me. "

Well, Kevin really wasn't the best person to interest on a coffee. Having been born with a sweet tongue, he preferred hot cocoa over anything else.

But since it was on Kurt...

"Sure," said he as he locked his cell phone's keypad and slipped it in his pocket. Really, that was the only reason he'd decided to take a break from his flight and take a landing in one of Mutant Town's discreet alleys -- to answer a phone call. With the thing on his ear, he made for the busier street of the district lest he be seen as seedy and just when he had ended the call, he'd bumped into Kurt.

That was the whole story.

"Excellent." Literally bumping into Kevin was a pleasant surprise. Beside the guy being genuinely pleasant, it was also the excuse Kurt had been looking for, the cue to take a break from his solicitations.

Clasping his comrade on the shoulder, he steered them around the corner and into the nearest coffee shop. It wasn't any coincidence Kurt was so nearby - the joint was, for his money, the best cafe in District X and possibly the greater New York area. Authentic caps and lattes, delicious french and italian sodas. And whoever worked the kitchen was a genius. Yes, Kurt spent a lot of time there.

----
The heat felt so good through the sides of his mug, and the soothing aroma made the morning's efforts melt away. Inhaling deeply, it was almost as if Kevin had been forgotten in the midst of this religious experience.

"Surprised to bump into you, Kevin. I mean, James I keep an eye out for. And some of the others hang out around here from time to time..." Kurt shrugged. "Been watching the news lately?"

Steam wafted from his cup of latte, a stringy white design floating just at the top of his drink. To these things, Kevin was a sure victim. Never having such graceful hands to decorate his drinks likeso, he liked to keep it that way for sometime and just...look at it.

He looked up to Kurt for a second when a question was thrown his way and he nodded, taking up that petite spoon lying by the edge of the small plate his order came in and striking the loopy shape, then mixing it around.

"We turn the TV on at work," he answered, setting the spoon aside and staining the otherwise pristine plate with a pale brown mixture. "Can't say they've had enough of us yet." Knowing the older man's devotion for their cause, Kevin was almost sure the topic of choice would be the protest -- the principal's statement, the cost of damages, petty other things like terrorist threats in other schools and the ubiquitous 'Are we safe?' matter.

Looping a finger around the arm of his white cup, Kevin lifted it for a sip.

"It's just the start." Kurt grinned over the edge of his cup before taking the smallest slurp. As much as he liked coffee drinks, he was a bit of a sissy when it came to the heat. The moment gave him a chance to rein his enthusiasm in. Who really wanted to here him ramble on about "the cause" all the time? Especially when he was preaching to the choir... no doubt others in the Brotherhood found Kurt boring, if not downright annoying.

It took him a moment to find something else to talk about. A dozen social issues sprang to mind (all of them mutant related) and besides that, the Brotherhood was his life.

"So... Dagger. Er, Anna." He wasn't entirely certain where he was going with this, but it seemed a fun idea, at least. Let's drop the weighty conversation and talk senseless about the Brotherhood. "Seems like a nice girl, man. What do you think? I mean, a little bit of a spitfire, but that's right up your alley, innit?"

Oh, oh, oh, what?

"My alley?" aside from the fact that Kevin completely did not expect those words to come right out of Kurt's mouth, it also made him wonder...why Anna? It wasn't like she was the only female, spitfire person in the Brotherhood, after all, and...well, it wasn't that he disliked her but...that was just so random!

He gave a small laugh as he propped both elbows onto the table and pressed a loose fist made out of entwined fingers against his lips, thinking... "Well, she's..." pause, reconsider, Kevin tasted his words before he looked over to Kurt and nodded, "She's a strong girl. A really brave one, too..." and uhh...

He let Kurt fill the rest in.

Kevin was a bit mild mannered to be part of the Brotherhood. On the quiet side, holding down the proverbial 9-to-5, and not the least bit a sociopath like so many of the others. It was a bit strange. It also made him an excellent target for some friendly ribbing. If it actually went anywhere, well, then Kurt would take the matchmaking credit.

"No doubt. She's been a good soldier." Kurt was almost laughing. It was clear he'd caught Kevin off his guard. But now he was stuck. He'd chosen Anna mostly for the pun of calling the girl with blazing fingers a "spitfire." Of course, the heat was also something she had in common with Kevin. Related abilities. Maybe the were related, somehow. Best not to think about it.

"Well, alright. Maybe not her." He shrugged. "Just think she might loosen you up a bit, man. I know I get wrapped up in these," he tapped some pamphlets he had absentmindedly set on the edge of their table for passers by, "but you seem a little up tight. No offense."

The pamphlets. Kevin worked in design, didn't he? Why hadn't Kurt tapped into him yet for a hand? If the conversation continued to flounder, he'd bring it up.

"No, no, not at all," he cleared his throat (per habit) and sort of fixed the way he sat which is basically to lean back to his couch's cushion and stare at his latte. Really, he wasn't sure how he'd let Kurt know, but that opinion was strangely valuable to him. Up tight, was he? Kevin never meant to be up tight, it was just that...

Well, since his powers literally burst into life, he hadn't been the most talkative man on earth.

He paid a passing glance to those pamphlets Kurt had tapped on as he rounded up some nice-sounding words in his head, licking his lips a bit as he formed a few sentences out of them, "I didn't mean to be up tight, I'm sorry," he made sure he looked at Kurt in the eye when he said this. "It was just that...since I was a kid, I never really felt like I had to umm..." a little shrug of hands, "open up a bit." at least that was what he thought Kurt was getting at. "I guess...I guess I just got too used to sitting on the corner but if it's making everyone uncomfortable, I'm sure I could try to change..." nodding.
