Who: Matrix & Mystique.
When: February 23, 2008 (6:00 PM)
Where: Xavier's; Computer Lab.
What: The Brotherhood is having issues with their network, so Mystique goes to find someone who may be of some help.
Status: Complete.
Rating: PG.
Mystique wandered the hallways, looking dressed for a change. Xavier and his worry about her corrupting his precious kiddies. She had a reason to be here, however. Magneto wanted the network Toad had set up for the brotherhood to be tied in with the X-kiddies network. For that to happen, she needed to find someone to make sure they had a solid connection between the buildings.
Matrix was bunkered down in one of the computer labs, updating and optimizing a few of the PCs (simultaneously), so they would run more efficiently than they had been. Most of her days consisted of doing this and keeping rogue intruders from breeching the system's security - not that there were too many people with working connectivity outside of these four walls nowadays. But, on occasion, someone with a working connection would try to tap into their network and bring it crashing down around their ears - metaphorically speaking, of course. There were even a few nasty viruses, Trojans, and worms still floating around in cyberspace to ward against; so her days, while slightly slower than usual, were still fairly busy. And when she wasn't doing her normal work, she would still be sitting at a computer, playing computers game and/or salvaging information from a very limited internet.
Mystique sauntered into the computer room and looked around. There was the person she was looking for. She headed straight for Matrix, then stopped and stood over her.
Eva's back had been turned away from her unexpected visitor when they had entered the room. However, what had alerted the techno-bug to their presence was by the vague reflection they had cast in one of the monitors she had been staring at. Blinking, Matrix stood up and turned to face the woman, keeping her expression passive, but pleasant.
"Need help with something?" she assumed right off the bat, as not many people came to her for a strictly social call. Most of the time, they needed help with a computer glitch or some technical malfunction, and that was generally the limit of her human-to-human interaction, for the most part.
Mystique smiled coldly. "Yes, actually. Toad is having some issues with connecting our network to yours. There are some incompatibility issues that we need information from you to be able to fix."
That cold smile didn't come as much of a surprise to the cybperath, since warm and fuzzy didn't exactly fit the Brotherhood's image. They preferred the intimidation method, which was all fine and dandy with Eva, because it wasn't like she was expecting anything more or less from them. But, if it bothered her in any way, it didn't register on her face at all; in fact, Matrix decided to smile in return.
"Well, you certainly came to the right person," she said, taking a side way step from the behind the chair she had been sitting in, and pushed it back in toward the desk with a slight scrapping sound.
"What's the information you need?"
Raven was no amateur with computers, but this explanation might take a while. She grabbed a seat and gestured to the computer in front of Eva. "May I?" Then she started to explain the issue and how the brotherhood system was set up. She didn't care for sharing that information with the x-people but it would be necessary to get the link up. Also, Magneto had said to give full access, and she couldn't come up with a good enough reason not to. The humans were almost all slavering beasts, they had no reason to be at odds with the X-men. However old habits were hard to break. At least this technopath wasn't someone that Raven had to deal with on the other side of the battle before.
"Please," Eva said, leaning back against the table with her arms folded, while Mystique explained the situation to her in detail. There really was no point in grandstanding or being rude in any way. Sure, this woman might've been part of the Brotherhood, but that was kind of beside the point now. Causing conflict would only add to the pressure and strain everyone was under, anyway.
"Hmm... Well, if you'd like, I could take a look at it?" Matrix suggested, helpfully. She wasn't entirely sure they'd be too keen on having an X-Man (or X-Woman in her case) look at their stuff; but to get to the bottom of the problem, it might be their only option.
Mystique nodded. "That was why I was looking for you." She sounded a bit brusk but it was more businesslike and not really malevolent. She leaned back and gestured to the screen. "Feel free." Then she pulled out some more papers, and added. "You will probably need to check out the equipment on our end to, I imagine."
Brusque tone dually noted, Eva turned back to the computer and a few windows opened almost instantaneously - without having to pull them up manually. She leaned down, resting the palms of her hands on the edge of the desk, while she sifted through pieces of electronic information, diligently.
"It may have something to do with the new firewall we recently installed; it's a bit finicky and we've had issues with our network, because of it. So, needless to say, when an outside source is trying to tap into our network, it tends reject it automatically, rather than giving us the option to clear it," Eva said a few moments later, while she straightened her back and turned to face Mystique again. She sort of figured that it had been the problem, but she wanted to make sure.
"I thought we had the issue somewhat under control, but clearly it's going to need more work."
She nodded and relaxed a bit. "Well that shouldn't be too hard to fix. We are intending to have the two systems blend into one anyways." Much like the supposing plan for the people on their teams.
"It should be."
Matrix could probably get it straightened up fairly quickly, but if things were more complicated than they appeared to be, she'd ask Zap to get in on the fun.
"I think I may have an idea that could help, though," she said, before she reached for a small, black CD case (that had been lying next to the computer she had been working on previously) and opened it up; she flipped through a few of the clear sheets within, until she found the particular CD she was looking for and pulled it out. "If you install this, it may solve the compatibility problems," she informed Mystique, as she handed it over to her.
Raven took the disk and tilted it in her hands, examining it. "It's worth a try." She just hoped it didn't make things worse. Using this would imply a large amount of trust on their behalf. Toad would check it out, of course, but if the technopath wanted to hide a virus or spy scan they couldn't find, she could probably do that. "I will let you know if it doesn't work." Then after a bit of a moment, she added. "Thank you."
"No need to thank me," Eva said. "If it doesn't work, just let me know; or if you can't find me, Zalika Pallaton is more than capable of helping you out." She didn't expect to be too preoccupied in the near future, but sometimes things came up. "I'll continue working on this issue until I can find a solution to it - you have my word."
Raven actually smiled. She appreciated competent people. She could work with this woman. She stood and gave a cut nod. "I shall keep that in mind."
Wow, a genuine smile; she hadn't been expecting that. But, it wasn't something she was going to complain about, because it showed that she might be gaining the woman's trust. Whoda thunkit, right?
"If you have any other technical problems, feel free to hunt me down whenever - day or night; I really don't sleep that much," Eva said, a slight grin turning in the corners of her mouth now. "I'm Eva Garza, by the way," said Matrix, as she extended her hand towards Mystique.
Mystique shook the hand. "Mystique." she introduced herself, even though she was sure the other woman knew her already by that name. She wasn't quite ready to walk about using her human name, no matter what the others did.
Eva did know the other woman's name (who didn't?), but it was nice to be able to formally introduce themselves to each other. After all, they weren't on the battlefield fighting on separate teams, they were allies now - even if only on a temporary basis.
"It's nice to meet you," Eva told her, retracting her hand after they were finished with the pleasantries.
"Indeed." Mystique said with a smirk of a smile. "I should be getting back before Toad completely disassembles our system."
"Yes, that would be very prudent of you," Matrix replied, a ghost of a smile lingering on her lips. "Last thing we need now is more complications, right?"
"Exactly." Raven replied as she left to head back with the disk Matrix had given her.
