When: October 1st, 2008 (4:00am)
Where: Danger Room
What: Surprise Training
Status: In progress
Rating: PG-13

Perhaps this was the Professor’s way of getting the two cocky twenty-somethings to ‘bond’, like some metaphor about energy with element. Either way, John and Bobby were getting along. Not only were they being more than civil towards each other, but they were working together to accomplish a task set forth by a Danger Room program created by Xavier himself. That creator, woke four seemingly random X-men up in the middle of the night to run through this program, two of which were Pyro and Iceman.

From pajamas to x-suits, the four mutants stood in the middle of the danger room without any scenery. A voice boomed over the intercom which was no doubt the Professor.

“I know you’re all tired, but sentinels don’t sleep. You have exactly one hour to eliminate the enemies in this program. Work together.”

After the echoed remnants of his instructions, the artificial surroundings began to materialize. It was night time and storm clouds blanketed the sky. Heavy rain poured from above and rumbling thunder could be heard every few seconds. At first glance, they appeared to be in the middle of a field with a nearby forest full of large ferns and redwoods. The only visibility came when lightening illuminated the surroundings like a quick flair. Aside from the storm and a few owl sounds, there was complete silence.

“I’d rather be in bed right now,” Bobby complained while the cold water beaded down his suit.

"I'd rather be dry right now." This wasn't the most fun thing ever, but Magneto hadn't exactly been easy on the Brood where early-morning-wake-up-calls were concerned. John could handle early. But this weather was a pisser. He supposed one had to fight for their life in the rain at some point in one's life, right? He'd write something about that later...

He crossed his arms in his new (and oh-so-tight) X-Suit, having given them a few swings to loosen the leather before being able to do so properly. "So where are these huge sons-a-bitches?" Their teammates seemed just as clueless...

"Cheer up, would'ya?" The heartfelt words were directed at the both of them, but Sam was already looking elsewhere. Squinting through the torrential rain, he canted his head around as the Danger Room's artificial surroundings began to materialize. Beautiful scenery .. much like home. Minus the gigantic sentinels out to get them. "Ah never get tired a'this." Sam never got tired of anything for the most part, much less when it involved the Danger Room. He was a frequent fan of training with others, always looking to eek out more efficient results with his abilities and general teamwork.

"An hour? More than enough time." He was itching to begin, cracking his knuckles in anticipation. The Sentinels were probably no match for the four mutants that were present. If anything, they would hopefully finish with ample time on the clock. But Sam knew that not all training sessions were ever the same. Nevertheless, he waited patiently, scanning as far as his eyes could muster in the downpour. "Coulda done without the rain though." Sam said to himself, but loud enough for the others to hear.

Rogue was no stranger to early morning wake up calls, having to rise much earlier than the sun during most days when she had been with the Brotherhood. Magneto seemed to enjoy keeping his (and Mystique's) Brood on their feet and she had the sneaking suspicion he liked putting them through the ringer - some more than others, naturally. However, that didn't mean Rogue enjoyed waking up early, especially anywhere between three and seven in the AM. Those were ungodly hours to be conscious during.

Not-so-bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed, Rogue stood beside her fellow X-Men as the steely gray of the Danger Room dematerialized around them and formed into something that would've done the Weather Witch proud. Marie's nose and eyes crinkled as the first few drops fell from the 'sky' and fell upon her hair and face. She was definitely glad that she had had time to pull her hair back into a quick ponytail before she simulation began; wet, matted hair in her eyes would've made it pretty difficult for her to be able to see much of anything. And when you were about to go up against metallic titans (who were not Pete), it was best if you could see everything clearly.

"Ah dunno, ah can't see anything," Rogue spoke up when Pyro asked about their current targets; she was also squinting through the rain like Sam, but she couldn't make out much of anything. Great. This was probably going to be a lot more difficult than Xavier made this out to be - and that had probably be his intention.

Oh well, it wasn't like Rogue didn't enjoy a challenge every now and then.

At Cannonball's words, she glanced over at him and shook her head. "Ah don' recon it's gonna be that simple."

Though Rogue was in his presence, he needed to think of her as more of a teammate than his girlfriend right now. There's no room to play favorites in an actual mission and Bobby knew that. Desiring some organization to the expected chaos, Iceman took the lead and voiced his idea.

"I think we should split up in two. We're an easy target like this and if..." He stopped mid-sentence when a heavier rain drop splashed off his cheek and caught him off guard. When he wiped his face he noticed a black smear across his hand.

"What the hell.."

He rubbed the black substance between his fingers and smelled it.

"It smells like oil.." He looked up to investigate but the visibility was poor.

However, a flash of lightening would reveal something immense. Towering above them many feet off the ground was one of the massive anti-mutant machines. Xavier obviously made this more difficult than it was, as the sound of a sentinel could be heard from afar. But before Bobby could shout to his teammates his reflexes kicked in and the cryokine froze an oncoming missile headed right for the group. The missile was in front of them by the time it stopped and fell to the ground, but ice wouldn't encase the explosive force.

The missile exploded in front of them, throwing icy shrapnel around the field and a wave of concussive force into the group. Bobby flew several feet and landed on his back with a thud. The sentinel above floated to the ground and turned on spotlights that surveyed the damage. If any of the X-Men continued to remain in their current location, they would for sure lose the program.

The wooded area near them began to glow from within and the tops of trees began to move side to side. The sound of breaking branches and scattering birds echoed into the field as more mechanical giants strayed from the forest. An entire army of artificial intelligent robots were now lurking about, searching for their targets. The team was vulnerable, someone needed to act quickly.

Ass: Officially handed to him. John struggled to get to his hands and knees, surveyed for his teammates, then moved to stand. He kept his feet busy, avoiding the spotlights while he called to Sam, "You should take out its peepers, Cannonball!" It's big glowing eyes roved over the ground. Even if the bastard that was on top of them didn't see them by his own glow, the oncoming attackers might. They should head for the woods. "Anyone wanna take cover, or?" He gestured rapidly at the group of trees. Despite it being the place the Sentinels were coming from, he felt it might be the best place to be. Getting smashed by a tree or a Sentinel's foot - same difference. He glanced to Rogue, wondering if she had any tricks up her sleeves. It hadn't been too often that anyone in the Brotherhood had to deal with anything metallic. Magneto usually covered that.

Before he had time to react (let alone process the entire situation), Sam was hurled back by the concussive force of the anti-mutant missile. Damn, these sentinels were stealthy bastards, he had grown accustomed to their loud thrusters. He landed on his back a few feet away, before hearing John in the wake of the blast. Twisting his body over, he grunted softly and pulled himself up rather quickly before looking over at the roving sentinel coming closer. "Ah'm on it.", while he dodged a spotlight that was veering around.

He quickly stretched his arms outward, aiming it at the general area of the head of the sentinel that attacked them. Flickering with red and orange energy, Sam accelerated the reaction, bypassing available thermochemical energy into his hands. When he knew it was going to be a good shot, Sam let it rip. The air molecules around his body were moved apart in a circular fashion, a small local shockwave stretched outward from his feet as two jets of red and orange thermal energy roared towards the machine. The sheer power of the blast had moved Sam back a foot or so, leaving a skid mark across the grass.

Needless to say, the Sentinel was summarily blinded and executed. The searing mark made a deep collar around the Sentinel's neck, the flames still writhing and melting the surrounding metal. And -- the most important part -- the head was disintegrated in one fell swoop. The rest of the decapitated sentinel fell to the earth in a victorious crash, to which Cannonball turned back nonchalantly to John and moved towards him quickly.

"Ah'll take you up on that offer." he said, breathing heavy, that blast took more than Sam expected. He shifted his eyes towards the forested area.

The impact of the explosion sent Rogue hurling through the air, until gravity brought her back down to earth with a thud and sounding 'oof' escaping her lips. She was face down but, luckily for her, she had managed to position herself just so, so her face hadn't connected with the ground. That would've hurt. Badly. Instead, she had her gloved hands propping her upper torso up vertically from the ground; her nose a mere two or three inches from being smashed.

Once she had recovered (which surprisingly hadn't taken that long), Rogue pushed herself back up all the way and got back up onto her feet, steadily. She just knew this simulation wasn't going to be easy. None of them ever were, but this one was probably going to be the toughest one (that she had been apart of) yet.

When John glanced over at her (she had only landed a few yard from where it had been), Rogue quirked an eyebrow at him. He thought she had some brilliant idea to get them out of this pickle? "Ah reckon---" But, before the rest of the sentence could be completed, Cannonball took off in a blaze of glory and not too much longer afterwards, the Sentinel that had attacked them just moments ago was now lying broken (and very much beheaded) on the ground.

"Yeah, ah think we better head inta th' woods for cover." It'd at least buy them enough time to come up with a somewhat decent plan.

Everyone had the right idea about heading towards the trees, but Bobby was leery that the programmer would be expecting that. Putting an open field next to a forest seemed purposeful for some reason. Cannonball’s offensive move gave them the opportunity to make a run for it, but they wouldn’t go unnoticed. Too many machines were spread throughout and all of them were set to search and destroy.

It then struck Bobby that their motion sensors were more than likely not being utilized, as it was very dark and raining. Their visual ability was probably set to thermal location - making it almost impossible to avoid being found.

“Wait guys, before we dart out of here - trust me on this.”

With that he blew icy frost onto himself and the others. This would make them invisible to the sentinels for just enough time to find cover. He could turn himself to ice, but he didn’t want to use so much energy so soon.

“Sam, John, think you guys could torch some of those trees on our way there? It might throw them off!”

Everyone seemed to think John's idea was fine. But, of course, Bobby had input and could improve things! Let's all work as a team, John!

Pyro felt the arctic blast and felt like he was in some bad gum commercial. Not only did it tick him off, but it brought back bad memories. He supposed Bobby wasn't the biggest fan of bonfires now, though. With that thought in mind, the pyrokine smirked and gave a shiver through his frosty cloak. "On it, Snocone." Iceman. Whatever.

He glanced to Sam and as the group rushed forward at the wooded area, he motioned that he was going to take the right side. Either Cannonball could take the center where the majority were coming from, or he could take the right end and they could draw the beasts apart. When they got near, John decided it was time to shed his baby blanket and torch some trees. Once his lines were alight, the sound of metallic monsters crushing trees became more rushed and focused. Without much thought (second nature?), John turned to ensure Rogue's location and safety. Whoever she decided to stick with (most likely Bobby), he wanted to make sure she was alive. Or, not 'out of the game'. A huge mushroom-shaped burst of flame came up from John's location and he moved out of sight into the tree line. They'd have to catch him, Iron Giant fucks.

" Ahrighty, boss. " He was older than Bobby, but sometimes you have to let the younger ones lead.

The arctic wind chilled Sam's body, his uniform and hair became covered in a light frost. He whistled a few lines of Frosty the Snowman and moved towards the wooded area. Sam squinted his eyes once more as he scanned the wooden area, catching John's gesture that he was going to take the right side. Sam stopped whistling abruptly and faintly nodded. Cannonball pointed towards the other side, Sam's logic being the Sentinels would rush to either side. Then they could systematically eliminate them. Anything to draw them apart would suffice.

When Sam saw an opening to set the trees aflame, he activated his blast field. The frosty cloak that Iceman had given him evaporated into a wisp of steam, now replaced by the deep orange aura that surrounded his body. He aimed both hands at a singular tree, a combined jet of thermochemical energy consumed the tree. He continued manifesting the jet as he moved across the line of trees which he had targeted. The Sentinels were barreling towards their position and fast.

During their time together, Rogue had gotten used to the occasional arctic blast from Iceman. So, when he had blanketed her in a thin coating of ice, she didn't even bat an eyelash. Sure, it might've been cold, but she trusted him to do what he thought was right for the team, as well as the mission in general.

While Bobby instructed the other two men, Rogue moved to her boyfriend's side and waited. It wasn't much longer afterwards when Pyro and Cannonball were off doing their thing - throwing the metal giants off their course. She watched them for a good few moments, before she glanced over at Bobby and wondered, "When should we start headin' in?"

The pyrotechnic show John and Sam were giving was pretty entertaining to watch from the sidelines, but they needed to survive. And standing there like two bumps on a log wasn't going to help them any....

Bobby looked to his digital clock sewed into his sleeve, fifteen minutes had elapsed already. The huge flames that engulfed some of the trees seemed to be successful decoys. Many of the sentinels began heading in that direction. It was now or never.

“Run!”

Iceman grabbed Rogue’s hand and made sure he was behind the group during their run for cover. Some of the ice on their bodies began to shed, except of course Bobby‘s. It wasn’t until they were only a few more yards away from the brush that one sentinel seemed to notice their now warming bodies.

You could hear the weapons charging, but there was nowhere to go. Someone no doubt was being targeted. The area to their right lit up as blasts of energy came raining toward them. Dirt and grass flew up into the air and smoke billowed along the field. This plan unfolded with little success. Did someone get hurt? Who was hit?

So they caught him. John had been headed toward the middle of the forest, hopefully the location of their re-grouping. When the not-so-stealthy beasts had passed, he moved from one clump of pines to the next until he was at the edge of the clearing in the dead center of the woods. "Hello?" he said quietly into his headset. By the time he glanced skyward and noticed his company, the missile was already fired. Fuck! He raised his hands and attempted to slow it or control the heat, but there wasn't a chance. It shot down a few yards before him and exploded into the ground, sending Pyro back into the trees. The Sentinel came down and its feet touched the earth. "Mutant," it began in a cold, robotic drone, but John didn't hear the rest of his rights (or lack thereof)... he was out.

Damn, the diversion worked. Bobby called to run. The Sentinels were headed towards the decoy heat signatures, while Sam ran deeper into the forest. He figured that flight wasn't a good option at this point, seeing as the sentinels would be in hot pursuit of his fiery trail. No sign of Bobby and Marie, the forest was playing tricks on his vision. The Sentinels' distinct thrusters and the blaze he and John had left in the machines' wake were far off ... but they were on the move again.

Sam overheard the pyrokine on the headset and scanned the area for any sign of him. Shit, he found him. Running towards him, he caught a view of John's pursuer through the treetops, the visibility was still poor. But it was far too late, the missile landed in front of John sending him flying into the trees. Sam shielded his eyes with his right arm, before bringing it back down. His hands curled into fists. That sentinel sure was a bastard and now was as good a time as any. The blast field enveloped his body in a radiant orange aura, thermochemical energy was rerouted to his legs and feet. He wasn't called Cannonball for nothing. The thrust turned on rather loudly, followed by smoke and thermochemical flames streaming from his lower body.

He rocketed after the Sentinel, zigzagging through the trees with relative ease. It landed, perfect. Sam barreled into the chest of the machine full-force, yelling "Woo!" while passing through the inner circuitry unscathed. Flames and sparks flew out of the Sentinel from all sides. When he launched out the other side, Sam hadn't noticed the large tree in his way and proceeded to knock it down, the trunk splintering in half and falling to the forest floor. He willed his thrust to be turned off, the flames and smoke ended in an abrupt streak. Sam flew into the ground with a large thud, rolling and flipping along the dirt until his back smashed vertically into another tree. The tree cracked but neglected to fall over. "Ow." He grumbled (not even remotely injured), his blast field was still up. Sam still had the habit. The Sentinel keeled over and slammed into the ground, repeating " Mutant mutant mutant. " until finally short-circuiting into silence.

Getting up and "dusting" himself off, he ran over to John who was out cold. Leaning next to him, Sam spoke into the headset, hopefully Bobby and Marie were still around. "Iceman... Rogue. Pyro's out like a light." He heard the Sentinels in the distance. His invulnerability field dissolved, wisps of his orange aura faded into the night air as he breathed heavily, scanning the area for any more of the sentient machines.

"Damn Sentinels." He muttered under his breath.

Rogue's grasp tightened on Bobby's hand while they ran for cover.

From behind, she heard as the missiles had made impact with the grassy ground and soon both she and Bobby were envelope in a cloud of dirt and debris, and light. Her eyes shut tight to keep the dust from getting into them and further impeding her vision, but she was fighting like hell to keep ahold of Iceman's hand.

Someone had to have been hit. There was no way that they all could've escaped this attack unscathed, and then she heard a crackle of static in her earpiece, followed by Sam's voice to confirm her suspicions.

Iceman... Rogue. Pyro's out like a light.

Dammit. Well, at least three of them had made it this far.

By this time, Rogue was slowing down (but not stopping). "Is he badly injured?" she asked quietly into her headset. "And where are ya?"

Forge moved through the forest quickly and quietly. Only the faint buzzing and clicking admitted by the servos in his mechanical leg gave him away. His brisk pace was uninterrupted by the mechanized monsters over head. Even if they were programed to notice him they probably would have had a hard time locating the old medicine man. Forge had a knack for disappearing in plain sight, especially in this type of environment. The forest and heavy vegetation were like a second home. Jon appeared alongside Cannonball and pushed past the Kentucky-fried mutant. He pulled a small object from his pocket and bent down toward the unconscious man and waved the chemical powder under Pyro's nose. If that didn't wake him up, nothing would.

The Native stood and turned to the Guthrie boy. "Cannonball, I suggest you keep moving. They're still looking for you." Forge said with little emotion in his face or tone. Pyro was out of the game, but the rest were still targets.

"Nah, Ah reckon he was jes' knocked out.", he commented into the headset. The sentinels were on the move towards his position, they had picked up his signature. He shrugged to himself as if talking to someone near him, turning around to survey his current . "Ah'm in a clearin', there ain't alotta trees here, so Ah reckon you'll find--" Sam heard rustling behind and turned quickly, narrowing his eyes in the gloom. If it weren't for his senses already being frayed, he would expect a big-ass Senti-- an old man. He blinked a couple of times as Forge passed him. "Ya reckon he'll be--" he said quietly while he administered the packet, before Forge interjecting silenced him. Sam glanced at John's unconscious body and then to the Native.

"Ah'right.", he nodded, turned on his heel and began to run back into the forest. What Cannonball needed to do was find the others and Sam had no idea where to start. Heaving breaths took over, intermittent with the thrusters of the Sentinels and the knocking down of trees ... all coming closer. He was going in the direction that Iceman and Rogue had been going towards ... finally seeing an errant crater in the middle of another patch of trees. "Rogue. Bobby. Ya around here? There's a crater--", he spoke into the headset once more. Sam stopped abruptly, the droning sound of the Sentinel right near him. The giant machine unceremoniously dropped down through the canopy, thrusters turning off rapidly and arming itself. "Mutant.", the Sentinel's voice blurted out before firing a missile in Cannonball's direction. Shit. His blastfield wasn't even up.

It was a complete blur after the explosion behind them and Bobby heard little out of what was said on the radio. Rogue was still behind him, but the others somehow ended up displaced. He adjusted his disheveled headset just in time to hear Rogue ask about Pyro’s condition, he shook his head in disbelief. Of course he was worried about John’s safety, but he was also worried about their overall success in the program.

“We’re already one man down,” he commented to nobody.

He knew the only way they would start making some progress is if they went full force. If it weren’t for the fact that he was nearly killed when he tried to ‘fly’ during the Darkseeker invasion not too long ago, he would be totally confident in taking to the air with his ice slide. But now wasn’t the time for fear and hesitation. He motioned for Rogue to hold on around his waist.

“Come on, we need to find the others and regroup. I don’t think splitting up is the best idea anymore.”

Just knocked out... Rogue could certainly live with that answer. John would be all right all in due time, but now they had to worry about keeping themselves from getting terminated from the game.

Rogue blinked a bit when hers and Cannonball's transmission was cur abruptly and her brows furrowed slightly. She hadn't heard anymore explosions and couldn't see any of the metallic beasts, but they were certainly still out there... somewhere. And they were probably closer than they thought.

When Iceman gestured for her to take a hold of his waist, she nodded and did as instructed. Her arms enveloped around his middle and she gripped him snugly. If he was about to do what she thought he was, then she'd need to hold tight.

"Yeah, ah'm inclined ta agree with you there." Splitting up always sounded good better in theory than it was in actual execution. There was strength in numbers after all....

For the love of! Jon punched a code in on the panel of his left hand and the entire scenario began to disappear. The missile that had been headed for Sam faded into oblivion. The scenery around Rogue and Iceman melted away and the cold, metallic reality was exposed. He crouched again and gave Pyro a (semi) gentle slap to the face to further bring him to. His robotic hand grasped the boy's collar and as Forge stood, so did Pyro. He kept a steady hand near the boy's back until he was sure John could stand on his feet on his own. "You're too slow," he informed the Australian, loudly enough for the others to hear. "You need to move more quickly." His eyes shifted to Cannonball and he said more loudly, "Good effort, Guthrie. Next time, though, try to stay under the radar." Too loud, too showy. To Rogue, he shared this pearl of wisdom, "Do something." What had Magneto supposedly been teaching her all those months she'd been gone? The man was an asshole, but he wasn't an idiot. The girl couldn't be shy of using her abilities if she was going to be one of the X-Men again.

Pyro swayed and he steadied the grouchy-looking lad. He focused in on Iceman, now, "You fancy yourself a leader, Drake. Next time, lead or let Guthrie." The showboat had more common sense most of the time. Home training. "You're all dismissed." He made to turn and walk toward the exit, then paused and glanced back. His eyes shifted purposefully from Iceman to Pyro. 'Make sure he gets to the showers, at least' he meant to say, then he said aloud, "Gert has prepared an early breakfast. I suggest you partake. She worked hard." Probably not. Woman was a wizard.

When the scenario was shut off and the missile zapped out of existence, he breathed a heavy sigh. The trees, the sentinel, the fires ... all faded back into the metallic Danger Room once more. His gaze scoured the ground as it segued from the forest floor back to the tiling that stretched all across the training room. He turned around and sauntered towards the Native, cracking a smile when he heard Forge's comment about John. It quickly faded when Forge's gaze fell on him. Sam nodded at Forge's assessment, scratching the back of his head.

He liked the sound of leader though. Gaze shifted towards Iceman, trying not to look too interested in what Forge said about Bobby's leadership qualities. Maybe he should have taken the reins early in the scenario. No use now though. Passing John on the way out, he lightly padded him on the back. "Ah reckon you'll need breakfast." He chuckled lightly before making his way out. Gert was fantastic, maybe she had some pancakes or something whipped up...

No shit, shaman. John shook his head as he stood, trying to right its contents. Hell if he wasn't tripping out. He missed most of what the old dude said about the others, but he couldn't disagree with assessment of his own performance. "You're right," the ol' cyborg had a knack for being that way...

As Sam passed by, he raised his hand and gave the southerner a distinct and as-polite-as-could-be-managed flip of his middle finger. "Save me some grits." He smirked. He liked Sam. Always had. More quietly now, to Jon, "But can ya blame me? Seriously. I'm not exactly on my A-game. And these guys ain't no Globe Trotters." Okay, Sam was a Globe Trotter. All that, and John hadn't worked out in like... a month. He shrugged his shoulders a few times to loosen his body back up and took in some deep breaths. So maybe he'd wanted to get taken out early...

As prideful as Bobby was, he couldn’t help but agree with the senior X-Man that was covertly overseeing their participation. It was a failure that Bobby didn’t take lightly. He took his gloves off and flung them to the floor with force. The professor himself had told Bobby that he was a born leader, that he had the strong head and will power to make others follow, which was why failed training sessions such as this were such an immense disappointment. The Iceman melted, as so did his ego. He began to follow the others then stopped mid-stride. He turned around and returned to Forge in hopes the two could talk. But before beginning he glanced to Rogue.

“Go ahead with the others, I’ll catch up with you later. I don’t have an appetitie anyway.”

It was always strange to see the Danger Room return to its normal state, after braving its simulated elements; it always made her forget that it wasn't real sometimes.

Rogue had slowly unwrapped her arms from around from Bobby's waist and took a step back. The elder Native began handing out his critiques as soon as the simulation had been prematurely ended and when her turn came around she felt awkward and ashamed, but what he had said was true: She hadn't done much, if anything at all during the whole session. That was unacceptable, especially since she was still in the process of redeeming herself.

"Yes, sir," she said. Rogue had wanted to say 'sorry,' but she felt it wasn't really necessary. Once he had finished and Bobby urged her to go on to get something to eat, she merely nodded her head and slowly made her way towards the exist with John and Sam.

Forge had mentioned something about Gert preparing them an early morning meal, which made her spirits lift somewhat. She was starving.
