( Swiss biologist and psychologist Jean Piaget posited that children progress through 4 stages of cognitive development, among them, the Sensorimotor stage (usu. birth to 2 years old). The infant builds an understanding of himself or herself and reality (and how things work) through interactions with the environment. It is able to differentiate between itself and other objects. Learning takes place via assimilation (the organization of information and absorbing it into existing schema) and accommodation (when an object cannot be assimilated and the schemata have to be modified to include the object). )

( Sparkles, then star-like flashes, then dancing waves of colored light too low to be an aurora event. At the cusp of the storm, exactly at 1:11 in the afternoon, several small electronics like cel phones and radios and remote control devices exploded into showers of sparks. There was a hum that grew in intensity until it could be sensed and heard all over the Haven, even underground. Thunderbolts seemed to shoot out of the ground in the front lawn, and a blinding portal of white light appeared at the epicenter of the lightning show. The light began to subside just enough that a shape could be made out. A man. Yes, something male, made out of light, writhing in the middle of the storm. )

It was early morning when it happened. Suddenly, most of the electronic devices on the Haven premises came to life at once. Phones rang, radios and TV's came on if they were turned off, or the programming was interrupted by an insistent white noise that began to waver with the rhythm of speech. A few seconds into it, a voice could be faintly made out amidst the electric buzz. Finally, words could be understood but for a few seconds.

"...uhying to get home... *bzzzt zrraaattt* ... can you hear me? Can anybody hear me?"

The words faded into static once more and, in moments, were gone as mysteriously as they had come. The voice had sounded tired, desperate, and unthinkably sad.
