the plot thickens
Who: Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny
What: going semi-public with the relationship
Where: a quiet corner of the Gryffindor Common Room
When: a few days after Harry and Hermione began dating
Warnings: none

Harry was nervous, but he tried not to show it. He took a deep breath before walking out of the boys' dormitory. Hermione was waiting for him in the common room, and he attempted to smile reassuringly at her. He wanted to take her hand but knew it was better not to at the moment. That was difficult for him - always having to hold back, keeping his feelings for her suppressed in front of everyone else. That was most of the time. The common room was usually packed with people, and of course, they were not allowed into each others' dormitories. It'll be a good thing to just go on and tell. Then we won't feel like we're always sneaking around, he told himself.

They had promised they would tell Ron and Ginny first, as they were the people most likely to be affected by the news; Harry had a bad feeling that Ron felt the same way as he did about Hermione, and it had been obvious for years that Ginny had a crush on Harry.

He walked in silence with Hermione over to where their two friends sat on armchairs across from each other. Ron and Ginny looked up at them curiously, but not suspiciously. That was a good sign.

Harry exchanged a brief look with Hermione before speaking, but thought he should take the initiative and speak first:

"Right. We know you're wondering why you're both here," he said, meeting eyes with Ron and Ginny, "and it's because Hermione and I have a bit of good news. Well, we hope you'll see it as good news, anyway. Er..."

He cleared his throat, fumbling for the best way to say it. Ginny raised her eyebrow and, seeming to realize what was going on, gave Hermione an odd look. Harry caught it and immediately felt a pang of guilt.

He tightened his hold on her hand and walked right past Umbridge. He couldn't believe it - she had just let them go without even picking on them.

As soon as he was allowing himself to be happy again, it felt as though someone shoved him, violently, away from Hermione. His side slammed into the wall, and turning around, he saw that Hermione was against the opposite wall. Umbridge was staring straight at him. That wide smile was on her lips, as if she had just eaten a particularly juicy fly.

"No physical contact in the hallways, children!" she cried in her shrill voice. "If I catch you again, it will be detention for you and your young lady here, Potter."

Hermione glared a hole through Umbridge's head. She was going to look this up in the rule book, for sure. She seemed to be making up new rules every other minute, at whim and as she saw fit. She could see Harry's vein in his neck, the one that got so big when he grew angry, begin to bulge. "C'mon Harry," she said quietly, pushing off the wall and gesturing for him to follow. She was watching him as she took a couple of steps, silently willing him to let this go.

Harry took a deep breath and began to move again. He would have put his arm around Hermione out of spite at Umbridge, but he didn't want to get her involved in the toad's horrible detentions. Once they were a safe distance away, he swore under his breath. "I'm really sick of her already. Can't believe we have to survive the rest of the year with the old bat."

Hermione gave Harry a look that was a mixture of sympathetic and worried. "I know, Harry, but please don't get yourself anymore detentions," she pleaded. Knowing that he was defiant and would stand up for what he believed in no matter what, she added, "I want to be able to spend as much time with you as possible, and I won't be able to if you spend every moment in detention." She knew she was being manipulative, but she had to use what she could.

"No... I'll be good. Promise." He forced himself to smile at her. Harry hoped he would be able to keep that promise, but with Umbridge, it was difficult to tell. He led Hermione to their usual spot in the Great Hall and pulled out her chair for her to sit down. Maybe he had to be careful about physical contact, but that didn't mean he could not still be a gentleman to her in front of everyone else. For now. He was sure Umbridge would make a rule against being polite soon.

	She smirked as she sat down, noting the looks they received from the others in the Great Hall. In particular, Cho Chang, who was giving Hermione a scathing look. Hermione frowned, looking over at Harry as he took his seat. "Cho seems angry," she said. She didn't like for people to dislike her. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Oh, does she?" he asked, turning to glance at Cho quickly. Hermione was right. She did look pretty ticked off. But now that things were... different, he wouldn't have given Cho a second look - not even a first look - if Hermione had not pointed her out.

"Don't worry about her," he told her. Unable to stop himself, he reached under the table and held her hand reassuringly.

	She squeezed back, but couldn't help but worry. She had invited Cho to their little group meeting to see who wanted to learn real Defense Magic... and she really hoped that Cho wouldn't turn against them now. As if on cue, Cho walked over and stood behind them. "Hello Harry," she said softly, smiling fakely at him. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Hermione felt like putting her head between her legs and taking deep, soothing breaths. Or becoming a turtle, so she could pop her head back into her shell. She knew why Cho was here - it was to humiliate her. She had spoken to Cho about Harry, as she knew he liked her and Cho had admitted to liking him in return. Now here she was, taking him away, or so it seemed.

Cho continued to beam. "I'm brilliant. I didn't know you and Hermione were going steady," she said to him, laying a hand on his shoulder, pretending Hermione wasn't even there. Hermione had turned at her approach, but was facing forward now, her back rigid and tense.

	"Oh." If Cho had placed her hand anywhere on him a couple of weeks ago, he may have jumped for joy. But now it just felt... scary. "It just happened a few days ago, actually. Er, we haven't told a lot of people yet." He looked over at Hermione, feeling bad when he saw how tense she looked. He fumbled for more to say helplessly. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Yeah. Um, Cho, are you all right?" he asked, though he fully knew what the problem was. But it wasn't Hermione's fault, as Cho seemed to think. After all, he and Cho had barely spoken to each other, up until now. Harry was glad now that he had never made a move on her. Cho was too fake for him anyway. Even if they had dated, she probably only would have feigned interest in him to get information about Cedric, which he hated to talk to anyone about.

"Hermione didn't do anything...," he lied. Let Cho think that he had initiated things, that he had kissed her first or something. He should have initiated them anyway, but he had been too chickenshit.
