the plot thickens
Who: Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Ginny
What: going semi-public with the relationship
Where: a quiet corner of the Gryffindor Common Room
When: a few days after Harry and Hermione began dating
Warnings: none

Harry was nervous, but he tried not to show it. He took a deep breath before walking out of the boys' dormitory. Hermione was waiting for him in the common room, and he attempted to smile reassuringly at her. He wanted to take her hand but knew it was better not to at the moment. That was difficult for him - always having to hold back, keeping his feelings for her suppressed in front of everyone else. That was most of the time. The common room was usually packed with people, and of course, they were not allowed into each others' dormitories. It'll be a good thing to just go on and tell. Then we won't feel like we're always sneaking around, he told himself.

They had promised they would tell Ron and Ginny first, as they were the people most likely to be affected by the news; Harry had a bad feeling that Ron felt the same way as he did about Hermione, and it had been obvious for years that Ginny had a crush on Harry.

He walked in silence with Hermione over to where their two friends sat on armchairs across from each other. Ron and Ginny looked up at them curiously, but not suspiciously. That was a good sign.

Harry exchanged a brief look with Hermione before speaking, but thought he should take the initiative and speak first:

"Right. We know you're wondering why you're both here," he said, meeting eyes with Ron and Ginny, "and it's because Hermione and I have a bit of good news. Well, we hope you'll see it as good news, anyway. Er..."

He cleared his throat, fumbling for the best way to say it. Ginny raised her eyebrow and, seeming to realize what was going on, gave Hermione an odd look. Harry caught it and immediately felt a pang of guilt.

Hermione's stomach had been in knots since the night she and Harry had decided to become a couple. She was so happy to finally have him, but she also couldn't stop the guilt that tore at her. She had wanted to tell Ron and Ginny right away, but that had been impossible with their class loads and Umbridge. Not to mention, she was working on ideas for their Defense Against the Dark Arts... club, she supposed.

When she saw Harry, her stomach did a different sort of thing - a sort of somersault. She was happy to see him, but had been glancing nervously at Ron and Ginny as she waited. They were most likely confused as to why she had waited on Harry instead of joining them. At least, she hoped so. As they approached, she tried to give Ron a half-smile but he just looked back and forth between them curiously.

When Harry spoke, she gauged their reactions. Lovely - Ginny seemed irritated. With her. Of course she was. Ron, bless him, was still curious.

"Come out with it, then, mate," he said to Harry. Hermione looked at Harry and almost whimpered. This sucked.

She cleared her throat, knowing that he shouldn't have to do this alone. "Well.. the other night... Harry and I realized that..." she said, stopping and giving Harry a searching look. Lord, this was hard!

"... that what we feel for each other is more than just friendship," he finished for her, slowly. "We're dating now, but we haven't told anyone else. Mostly because we wanted to tell you both first."

Ginny's mouth was in a tight, thin line, and she was now giving Hermione a scathing look. After all the things she had shared with Hermione -- all her confessionals about her feelings for Harry -- and now this? And him! How could he do this? Well, it wasn't as though she had ever expressed herself to him, but still. She wouldn't be able to forgive Hermione so easily.

Taking in Ron's and Ginny's expressions, particularly the mean look Ginny was giving Hermione, Harry immediately took the defensive. "Look, it wasn't exactly her idea. It's... well, both of us."

He gave a small sigh and looked at Hermione helplessly. So, he had been wrong about them taking this well.

	"How nice for you," Cho replied through clenched teeth. She obviously didn't think it was very nice. "Hermione sure does get around." Hermione didn't say anything, just continued to stare forward, her body trembling. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)
