so much for Thanksgiving on the right day
Right now I'm mostly thankful that I no longer have a migraine.

There's food in the oven and I'll do a much longer post about it all later.

Hope those of you who celebrate (and those how don't) had a great day!

Naturally, I requested Static Shock, and now I'm spreading the word in hopes this will reach someone who can actually write Static fic. :)

    Dull week...
Monday: still at work till 10pm, till TSH#1 and I finally packed up and left.
Tuesday: Took Bob to vet: she weighs the same as she did last time, so the vet hopes she's plateau'd out. Stayed at work till 10pm, till TSH#1 and I finally packed up and left.
Wednesday: Worked at home till 3pm, went into work, stayed at work till 10pm. (TSH#1 was through in Glasgow at a work-related event.)
Thursday: Twerp and FreshStart had meeting, which - towards the end - I overheard enough (door opened) to make clear they had been talking about me. Huh. Left work at 5:30 to attend work-related event. Left at 8pm and went to non-work wine-tasting. (White Rioja is great stuff, by the way.)
Friday: Left work at 5:10 to attend work-related event. Left at 7:30pm, did shopping, got home at just after 9pm.

Am attempting to figure out where I want to go for Christmas. For the last sixteen years, with only a couple of exceptions, I've been meeting up with two friends for mince pies, wine, and midnight mass. This Christmas, one of them is dead, and the other plans - rightly, I think - to go on holiday somewhere else. (I would go with him if he were going, but I have been going to that church specifically for midnight mass on Chriatmas Eve since 1987, first with one friend, then with another, and now both of them are dead. It feels too weird to be going there on my own. I'd like to be somewhere else instead.)

Because 4-H Lady was willing to brave Walmart at 5am
I now own a Philips MP3/video player*. So, does anyone know how I can get my various AVI files (and DVDs) into SMV format so I can take them places with me? Preferably a free way?

*And a pair of boots that are too narrow in the heel, so I'll have to return them. :(

Edit of SQUEE: I just realized I can now conveniently listen to podfics!

"Group Three: The Go On Without Me's. For you, November turned out to be a very bad month to try and write a novel. Life went completely crazycakes, and you faced a never-ending series of demanding work or school projects, health emergencies, social obligations, and/or tech meltdowns. You managed to get a few good ideas down on paper, but never quite found your novel's rhythm. You're thinking of bowing out, and planning on giving it a try next year."

    That was me.

But I still want to write...

Somehow, the Friday the 13th DVDs I ordered on the 23rd, shipped on the 24th and arrived today. And they managed that with Super Saver shipping (because I'm cheap). Dude! :D

I thought the "Lewis Vendredi made a deal with the devil..." opening lasted through season two; I'm sad they cut it on the DVDs.

I wish Rashid had been in more than two episodes. He was awesome.

    simple yet tasty
Take a bagel, slice it, toast it and put a generous amount of cream cheese on both slices. Then take a couple artichoke hearts and chop them up fine* and use them as sammich filling. Serve with Kalamata olives on the side.

Speaking of food, we got our box yesterday; I was just too wiped to report it.

Persimmons, tangerines, apples, kale, chard, lettuce, some other green and sweet potatoes.

That is the final word count before my fingers fall the hell off. I hit the 50k, my original 75k and almost made it to 100k.

Now I just have my last homework assignments to do, an essay to write for English, and some programs to finish coding. Icy/Hot, you are my friend today!

If I ever use the word "cerulean" to describe House's eyes
Please take away my writer's licence.

Cerulean is not just a fancy word for "blue", though I'd guess from some writers' use they think it is. There is a specific pigment of which the primary chemical constituent is cobalt, which has been used by painters to get a stable blue colour without greenish undertones since it was invented in the early 19th century.

It's also got a specific colour-name use to describe two hues of blue: very light blue (synonyms sapphire, lazulin); or a dark almost purplish blue which is also known as "bright blue", oddly enough. Both can be called "sky blue".

But really. Like most people with pure blue eyes, Greg House's eyes sometimes look colourless (absence of pigment) sometimes you can see the blue colour more strongly. They do not ever look like sapphire, or like potassium, or like cerulean blue paint.

What POV character in House MD would be likely ever to look at blue eyes and think "cerulean!" anyway? None of them are painters. Or photographers. Or even graphics designers.

    huh....
Due to a bit of stupidity on my part, I spent the day without internets. And you know...I missed people, but not the internets themselves. Lemme know if anything interesting happened.

Actually, you all should be glad I spent the day offline; I'm grumpy and crampy and apparently someone, probably Og, slept in just the wrong spot on the bed, forcing me to sleep in a certain position, so my knees and back hurt. It's not that I wouldn't happily kick him off the bed, it's that he does it in the middle of the night and I automatically adjust without waking up.

For those not on my NaNo filter, I'm declaring it a half win. I wrote 20,500 words and I'll probably manage another 5,000 before the end of the month. Or who knows, maybe I won't. Still that's 20K of fic I didn't have on October 31, so there you have it.

I have to go to our local upscale grocery store to pick up the lamb tomorrow. That's gonna be fun. I also have to go to Coco's to pick up the pie so at least I'll have French Toast for lunch or something.

    Going to hell. Again.
You know that Christian side hug thing I linked to earlier? Well, my brain refuses to remember the actual lyrics, beyond, "Gimme that Christian side hug," but I'm earwormed by the beat...so I'm afraid I'm coming up with alternate rhymes for "side hug", like "self love" and "butt plug". I am quite sure this sullies the purity of their white boy gangsta rap about how they're such sexual deviants they can't even hug someone without being uncontrollably turned on.

My lyrics do make about as much sense. The last round went, "I'm a rough rider/with a Jesus butt plug/So gimme that Christian side hug/ 'cause I practice self love."

Edit: It dawns on me that apparently, Fundie boys are all Edward Cullen, terrified they will be overwhelmed by Bella Swan's outrageous flavor.* See what repression gets you?

I am making gifts this year
And you know, I love knitting, but this is a LOT of work (not to mention the OMG WON'T FINISH ON TIME! panic). It's kind of making me feel guilty for all the times I've asked to have something written/drawn/made for me, instead of just telling people to drop ten bucks on a gift card from Amazon or Knitpicks.

(On a related note, I have things for people from that meme at the start of the year, and I am SO FAILING at getting them packed up and mailed out. Bad Dragovian. Bad.)

It is a truth not sufficiently acknowledged...
...that no one ever sees themselves as the villain: no one ever thinks of themselves as the bully.

Healthcheck warning: this leads to Kathryn Cramer's website via HideMyURL

In other, more pleasant thoughts, it has occurred to me that there is a lovely meme to be had comparing fandoms to cake.

The manly moustachio'd fandoms of the 1970s and 1980s are chocolate cake, solid and multilayered with thick chocolate frosting and sandwiched with more chocolate.

(The Professionals has an unexpected chocolate-ginger layer that involves Gordon Jackson/Cowley. Bodie and Doyle are chocolate cake even though neither of them have moustaches.)

House is a series of green tea vegan cupcakes with rosewater icing and little silver balls, though attempts keep being made to stir it in a more normal direction.

What is your fandom? What is its representative cake?

(This post wants you to know *bouncing up and down a little* that it was inspired by [info]jekesta's RiptideIsLove multifandom vid, which is all about being in love with a fandom so much you can't really think about any of the rest. Or anything else. Really. It is (the fanvid, not this post) deep and meaningful and clever and funny and cute and full of Avons, or at least one Avon.)

I don't know why I never thought to search Amazon for knitting stuff
Because I just got a set of 15 sizes of 6" bamboo DPNs - 5 of each size, so *math* 75 needles total - for $19.99 and $4.99 shipping. I would have preferred 5", which fits my rather small hands, but 6" should serve without tending to get caught on my sleeves like 7" do.

No, I don't expect these to be the highest quality needles ever at that price, but considering I rarely use DPNs because I prefer magic loop (I am working on slipper socks in magic loop! I AM ENJOYING THEM! I may get over my anti-sock bias!), I think these will serve just fine. And I can't argue with the price.

Then while I was there, I used a gift certificate to buy myself Friday the 13th: the series season two. Which netted me a $5 credit for Amazon Video On Demand. Which I may or may not use - I would have to watch at work since I don't have a fast enough connection to stream things here - but it's rather a nice thought, I guess.

    It strikes me
That for all the 70s had its share of fail, like every decade, I was rather lucky to be a wee!Dragovian growing up back then. Why? Why because, I had a wealth of women to look up to, from my Saturday morning heroines Isis and ElectroWoman and DynaGirl, to Wonder Woman and the Bionic Woman, and Charlie's Angels and Buck Rogers' Wilma Dearing in prime time. I don't know that today's wee girls have quite so much awesome, at least, not in shows they'd actually be allowed to watch. (Also, so many beautiful women, and not a visible rib to be seen in the bunch.)

    Oh, if only
If only I had $93, I could have Knight Rider: The Complete Series, a boxed set of all four seasons of the original. The box has a KITT-style scanner light. I keep hoping it'll show up as a deal between now and Christmas; I mean, there can't be THAT much demand for it, right? Discounts are good!

(I checked on the new series. $40 for one season! One short season. This is why God gave us Netflix.)

Sadly, Xena and Hercules are both out of print now. Woe. :(

    TWoP Update
I did hear back from the mods, which I didn't expect. Basically, the problem was my tone. Oh, and the mod who actually suspended me and deleted my posts didn't read far enough back--or ahead--to notice that the thread had been and continued to be way off-topic.

I honestly didn't realize that TWoP had a long history of being faily. It's a shame, because I really liked the SGU snark, as well as the recaps of Flash Forward. Oh, well.

    Podfic progress
I had to start again, because the stand mike wasn't working. It'd be fine if I had a desk, but with it on my lap in the back bedroom, I get echoes, and it picks up the ambient noise every time I shift position.

So I started...and realized quickly that the mike that connects to the jack on my laptop apparently picks up the broadcasts from the Catholic radio station whose tower is about a block away. While there's a certain irony in having the Catholic station ruining my attempt to record the NC-17 slash, I'm getting down to the wire here, and this is not helping.

Fortunately, I don't pick the station up after sundown, which still gives me a fair chunk of recording time. I've also ordered a USB headset mike that should get here on Wednesday. I kind of wish there were an adapter so I could use the jack mike at work, because my headset is crap.

They found the formula too late
You know what's on the last DVD of Knight Rider (the final four eps after the retool)? No big SRS GOV'MENT BIZNZ, just helping women, children, and old friends of Mike's. Like the original wrapped implausible episodes around for four seasons. If ONLY they had made the changes early enough to avoid cancellation. (Also, KITT3K developed some lovely snark in the final few episodes. I love him so. Not as much as KITT2K, of course.)

Mike: You ever think about making your back seat into a bed, KITT?
KITT: I'm afraid you'd be tempted to invite strangers.

Edit: HEY, why didn't anyone tell me Alona Tal was in the last episode of KR? (Oh, wait, because nobody was WATCHING KR by the last episode.)
