Greetings
Hello there!

I am Physalis, 21, an engaged lesbian European literature student, and a WoW n00b who's only just started playing WoW in an attempt to understand the game which has eaten my brother. Well, and because the graphics are pretty. But it's mostly my brother. Coming from the cruel world of forum based Harry Potter RPG I do understand the addiction of games in general, but with him it reached an extent that was frightening. Well, frightening me. For a year he has been completely unavailable all day as soon as he returned from school, until he went to bed. His marks were in danger, our parents worried, and I am trying to understand my teenage brother by playing the game myself. The fact that I could not understand him anymore bothered me.

I think I can understand his addiction much better now, I am thrilled to be able to actually understand what he is talking about, and I am frequently spamming my friends list's attention span with boring post about my painfully slow progress as a Draenei warrior. I thought that was going to be the easiest class, I am told that it is not. As a newb I haven't even dared to attempt PvP yet, as I am still in my very early stages (so, mods, feel free to delete this post if it's too OT), but I think I'll give it a go soon.

Yeah. As an RPG veteran I was actually looking forward to doing some RPGing as well, as I feel that's much more my thing than slaying monsters, but once I read up on my chosen race I noticed that they don't seem to be the best choice if you want to RPG, the backstory does not really make sense. Also, the hostile reactions RPGers receive on my server are also not too encouraging, but maybe I'll have to get used to that.

So, I am still finding my way around and I am looking forward to getting to know you and reading about what more experienced players have to say.

Addiction can be dangerous no matter what it's for. It's good that you're trying to understand your brother, and I really hope that you'll be able to reach him and pull him out of the shell of the game. :)

I've always found that warriors are one of the most difficult classes to master, but [info]asha, who is my mate, has really enjoyed building one. For myself, I'm much happier with a warlock or a hunter, although I've been trying all sorts of different classes.

I like the Draenei for the way their area is set up - it's very easy to build your character up all the way to 20 without ever having to go to the mainlands. My human warlock wasn't quite as lucky in that.

Out of curiosity, what server do you play on?

I guess I'll have to be careful not to get too addicted myself! It's definitely fun being able to follow a full conversation with him again.
I'm playing on the European server The Sha'tar. Again, I thought something less populated might be good, but that server was a bad idea, it's too empty by far. What server are you on?

My brother's also happier with mages and hunters. He made me play a Gnomish mage, but I did not really like that character, as one of my main attractions to the game at this point is still running around in pritteeh landscape, and the area is not as pritteeh as the various islands the Draenei live on.

We play on the North American server of Kirin Tor, which is fairly full. Unfortunately, we keep running into the fact that Alliance on that server has a rather bad reputation amongst Horde for being jerks when it comes to PVP outside battlegrounds. It's amazing to me just how much that can change your dealings in some areas.

*grins* I've always had a strange view of things, but I liked the Dwarven/Gnomish lands more than several others, Alliance-side. Though the later areas, like Feralas and Nagrand, I also love looking at.

I bet it does! My server is full of Hordies who thinks it's funny to kill every NPC in sight, which means that sometimes you have to wait for ages to complete your quests. It's really annoying.
Do you also get so many males playing female strippers who offer to give you a striptease for 1g? There are disturbing flocks of that kind of person in Exodar on that server. I wonder who pays for that.

Oh, I have never been to the Dwarven lands. Are they also hilly and snowy? I'm curious about the Tauren lands, everybody (well, my brother and his guild) say that it's beautiful there.

I don't so much see the strippers, honestly, though I've heard rumors. I suppose they don't come up to me because my characters are typically female. XD

Our guild doesn't allow certain PvP actions outside the battlegrounds, in the hopes of at least establishing ourselves as a haven of sanity amidst the jerks that have given Alliance such a bad reputation on our server, and it's seemed to work out relatively well. We're not the biggest guild, but we've been very careful about who we invite and how we handle things.

Dwarves and Gnomes share the same lands, actually, so yes, they're also hilly and snowy. And I agree with your brother and his guild. Tauren lands are beautiful - grassy plains with copses of trees here and there. Horde-side, that's probably one of my favorite places to be.

Odd, that did not seem to bother them with me, as they asked me, too. Well, maybe I have a sign over my head that says "lesbian", although I did not do anything to out myself in the game. Apart from the strippers, do male characters get different reactions than females?

Being the haven of sanity sounds pretty good. I bet that the horde players really appreciate that.

I'll have a good look at the Tauren lands, then, when I get the chance. I went for a because I love lush greenery and those purple trees. Still strange how little blizzard did for the graphics, though. They could have done so much more.

I honestly don't know. It could be the server. It could be what I guessed. It could just be the person. :) Either way, I imagine they get paid by some people - enough to keep them doing it, anyway.

I honestly don't know about the males vs. females in reactions. Despite being on an RP server, I tend not to socialize much beyond my guild, and they're all pretty friendly and straightforward.

One thing Blizzard did do that drives me batty (especially in Outlands) is make tons and tons of useless and unnecessary NPCs. My computer isn't a slouch, but it isn't the best in the world, either, and having to deal with that much activity that is more or less background noise slows it to a halt. Keeps me from enjoying outlands much at all.

I keep wondering who would pay to see such a virtual striptease offered by a character they could have created themselves?

Oh, I can imagine! I was only ever annoyed by too many NPCs when I wanted to get tips for the newbie quests I'm doing and you can't find the right person because there are tons of them there, and each of them has sent you on a different errand. Since the server is so empty I never had problems, but I dread the fuller servers for that.

Do you ever RP on your RP server? I joined an RP server because I thought that people would, but no one ever does, and everyone seems to look down on RP servers.

I don't tend to RP, but several of my guild do, a lot, and a bunch of my friends, horde and alliance side, all like to. :) Even then, it helps to have one or two people you know who like to RP to get started with. Sometimes, it takes you RPing in a public area with a couple of friends before you start seeing others join in.

I guess that's what I'll have to find, other people who are interested in RPGing. I met some who said they were, but they were not, really, and I find it difficult to RP as a Draenei, too. It'd be great if there were a few more experienced players I could start with. Striking up an RPG as someone who is new to the game and the world is difficult, but there seems to be hope. I heard that some people were planning to open an RPGing guild on the server I'm on, hopefully they'll really do that and allow me to join.
