Oh no, that's the last blueberry
WHO: Raine Sage & Drew Nolan
WHAT: Terrible mornings
WHERE: The Jam Jar
WHEN: Sunday; 17th. 2019
RATING: PG
STATUS: Complete
Stepping foot back into the Jam Jar after this many years was in all honesty completely terrifying. Mostly due to the fact that Drew didn't even know if Waverley still worked there and if she did if she'd be happy to see him. Could be that she'd forgotten all about him and he'd have to remind her of who he was. Hopefully she'd be happy to see him at the very least but no way of telling so Drew just took a deep breath and pushed his way in.
Of course as he approached the counter he felt his stomach plummet ever so slightly when it was clear that Waverley had either moved on or just wasn't working today. "I'll take a regular coffee, black please and a blueberry muffin," he hurried to order when the girl behind the counter looked at him expectantly. Better look like an actual paying customer instead of, well, he didn't know what.
Maybe he'd come back another time, might have better luck then.
-
"Oh no," it was probably rude, well, it was definitely rude, she was peeking around the guy that was ordering, "that's the last blueberry." It wasn't even like Raine needed a blueberry muffin -they had some really nice walnut and white chocolate ones that she was fond of. But blueberry, that was like the breakfast muffin of all muffins.
She tried not to be too brattish, since the man in front was still ordering, but there was definitely a little bit of a whine in her voice, like he'd just stolen candy from her mouth.
"There's not even any cherry." Okay, she was definitely whining.
-
It would be pretty damn impossible to miss that particular brand of whining coming from the person behind him in line and Drew found his eyebrow arching as if it had a mind of its very own. As the girl behind the counter went about sorting out his drink and muffin Drew took this moment to turn ever so slightly to regard the person who was clearly the whiner.
"Bad morning?" He asked.
-
"Broken coffee machine and sour milk." Which in the scheme of things, not a terrible morning. But that was the point. Morning. Raine tended to sleep until noon, but her roommate had been making such a noise on his epic escape from the apartment that day, which meant she'd been up with the daybreak and couldn't get back to sleep.
The lack of a working coffee machine meant she was still needing that fix, and no milk meant no cereal so she was hungry too. "Which is like the apocalypse of mornings."
-
Honestly Drew could relate. He relied on his coffee first thing in the morning to really get him off to a good start and if he didn't get that then well all odds were off. Undoubtedly his day would be a solid craptastic shitstorm of bullshit if he didn't in fact have coffee first thing.
He should probably be more concerned about how reliant he was on the stuff, but, eh, life was short.
"Well just because it does sound like you've had a crappy morning," he started before turning back to the girl behind the counter. "Can I actually get a white chocolate muffin to go with the blueberry." The girl just went with the flow and as she passed his items over and money was exchanged Drew turned and offered the blueberry muffin to the woman who was clearly having a bad morning.

Most days, humans weren't exactly stellar. They just got on with their lives, kept bustling around, moving onwards, not really bothering about the world around them. And that seemed like such a big miss for them, they never got the real experience of the world if they weren't engaged with it.
But then, on terribly mornings, people could surprise you.
As the muffin was held out, Raine couldn't help but let the wide, bright smile pull onto her face, "Aw, are you sure?" She was already taking it though, because while she was a gracious woman she was not stupid and she might've asked if he were sure but that was not a cue for him to change his mind. "You are an absolute sweetheart." And possibly the reason she wasn't going to devour half a pig a lunch time.
-
"Totally sure," Drew answered with smile. "I think your need is greater than mine." And he didn't hate white chocolate muffins and hadn't been set on a blueberry one so it just sort of made sense. "Hopefully it'll go some way to improving your day."
He held a hand out a moment later. "I'm Drew."
-
"I'm Raine," She was still smiling sweetly as she squeezed more than shook Drew's hand. "And you've definitely helped improve this morning."
And maybe it was a sign that today would get better, since she needed to visit her contact in the Vice department -which usually meant pretending to be a prostitute for the night, but it paid really well to help the police. "This will be what gets me through my whole day. The muffin and you being a total sweetheart that is."
-
Drew took note of her name. "Nice to meet you, Raine." He lifted his shoulders into a small shrug. "Well, glad to have been of assistance. I know what it's like to have a really shitty start to a morning." And it was amazing what a small act of kindness could do and the impact it might then have on the rest of the day.
He strayed over to where the sugars and other items for flavouring your coffee were held and proceeded to add a couple of sugars but still went all black.
-
"You too." It was nice of him, and Raine felt a little lighter just for the one random human kindness, as simple as a blueberry muffin. As she ordered her coffee, with a hazelnut shot to add some flavour, she didn't really lose her smile. It was entirely possible that this would take her all the way through the day with a little smile.
Like those videos that humans said gave back their faith in humanity -even when they were the ones corroding it. Maybe Raine could understand it a little better if there were more people like Drew around.
