Orlando, by Virginia Woolf
Okay, hey everyone ^^ First timer here, just yell at me if I do anything wrong.
I have, however, just read Orlando, by Virginia Woolf. And I am sorely disappointed. Seeing as I've never read her before, I don't if she's always this bad, but I found Orlando sorely lacking. For one thing, you can get no feel for the character. Granted I'm not done yet, but if after 200 pages you cannot empathize or understand the character at all, something is wrong.
In Orlando, we are given no permanant defining traits of Orlando. He changes constantly, which isn't bad, but there are no constants to him. Even his clumsiness changes. He is just so different every few pages that it is impossible to get into the book.
It rambles as well. It is not that hard people, to cut down on rambling in a story. It does so in the most irritation way as well, it is really indescribable.
No other characters seem permanent. I have yet to see a character occur twice in this novel. Once they've played their part, they are done. This is annoying as well. Yes, Orlando should be the main focus, but not to the exclusion of all others.
In all, I've found it to be a very mediocre book. If someone else has seen merit in it, please do tell. At least it makes me more confident as a writer. If that tripe can be published, anyone can.
