Okay so I ended up not having time to do a super post, sorry guys! However, I think I found something even better. My local team put out a "guide to all the guides" here. Enjoy!

oh my god, i want to rub my body all over this guide. if this guide was a dude in a bar, i'd be buying him fifteen drinks and getting real forward.

unrelated save that it's also affiliated with sb nation, but this tweet is just so much for me right now.

I just followed the link from that page to this article on NYT and it's the best ever. The visual of tailgate parties at a football game is just hilarious to me. I love reading about football in America though because when I was last there we had to watch it on the Spanish channel because none of the American ones seemed to care. (And also, we didn't have cable.)

Though tbh shaking my head at the person who thinks you can't say game, because it's called a match. That is taking it about a million steps too far.

It's a lot of fun here! I actually got to go one of the matches during the 1994 World Cup. It was VERY VERY hot, but omg so much fun. Maradona was about 15 feet away from us at one point too which was awesome. (We were watching Argentina play). It's on more than the Spanish channels now at least. I think 1994 was when they first aired them all because I recorded every single game on our VCR. But yeah, a lot of is still cable only.

Yeah that's... a little weird. I mean are we supposed to say football too then? Start using British English for everything? I guess I do use both terms interchangeably but not because I'm being forced to. I think it's because we're still kind of forming our identity in regards to soccer and there so many different regions of people that it's at all these different paces. IDK, this country's relationship with soccer is really interesting to me.

omg you've been to a World Cup game, that is SO COOL. I never have, but I would so want to if I ever get the chance.

My whole American/British English usage is a whole story of its own because I learned British English in school, lived in the US for a while and gravitated towards that, and then I moved home and started doing HP RP and made friends that were mostly of the British persuasion, so I'm like.. a big mesh of terms. And if you then add to it that the direct translation of the terms from Swedish are a mishmash as well (like we'd call a pitch a football field, for example, but we'd say match and not game, and football not soccer) so I'm just a big mess and people like that makes me go "...okay then".

And yes, me too! Football has always been a thing here, but it's interesting to see it happen in countries that have traditionally been more about other sports.
