Train to School
King's Cross was especially noisy on the morning that the Hogwarts Express left to take the students back to school for the new term. A heavy snowstorm the night before had caused delays and cancellations for many of the Muggles who were stranded inside the train station. Luckily, this did not have any real effect on the students, who were depending on the train to get them back to school, since the Hogwarts Express was still able to leave the station at eleven o'clock.

In the Prefects' Car [open]

Severus hated leaving his trunk in a compartment unattended, even to do his prefect duties, because there was no telling what might happen to it in his absence. If Potter or Black happened upon it, for instance, all his things might end up burnt to cinders. Thankfully, he'd found a few new, choice curses over the holidays, and he'd managed to adapt them to triggered spell-casting, in order to booby-trap his trunk appropriately. Anyone who attempted to open it would be in for a nasty shock.

Speaking of curses, he wondered if Lily's family was seeing her off, and if Petunia had deigned to join them. Another thing he'd found -- this time in a Muggle book on the occult -- was a diagram of the "evil eye," which he'd been itching to try out on Lily's wretched sister. Obviously, it wouldn't do anything, since Muggles knew nothing about magic, but it would scare and annoy Petunia, which Severus had to admit was one of his favourite pastimes.

He stood to look out the compartment window, but he saw no sign of Lily or her family on the station platform. When the door slid open behind him, Severus wheeled about expectantly, hoping it might be her.

Lily rushed into the compartment. "Oh, hi, I didn't see you on the platform! I was so worried I was going to be late, Petunia kept stalling my parents. Really, I think she was trying to make me late. You think she'd want me gone, it's not like she wants to see me," Lily grumbled as she sat down across from Severus. She hated to think it was a relief to go back to school, it was always nice to see her parents and it was nice to not have classes. Of course, Christmas is always nice, but there was only so much of Petunia and her new beau that she could handle.

"Well, hello to you, too," Severus said, trying not to sound amused at Lily's tirade, though he was a bit impressed that she'd managed to get all that out in one breath. "Did you have a good holiday, apart from having to deal with your sister?" He really shouldn't be amused, he knew, but he'd been trying to tell Lily since first year that her sister's companionship would not be that big a loss.

"Oh, it was lovely, aside from that. My parents seem to be doing well. They were really excited to have everyone home for Christmas. Petunia was talking about maybe going to her boyfriend's family's house, but she ended up bringing him along to our house." She knew if she didn't change the subject she'd end up spending the whole time complaining about Vernon Dursley. "How about your holiday?"

"Same old, same old," Severus muttered with a shrug. And by that he meant his father had come home at one o'clock on Christmas morning, three sheets to the wind, when he'd been thrown out of the corner pub. Tobias had then proceeded to kick down the front door because he was almost too drunk to walk, let alone locate his house key. Thankfully Severus had recognised what was happening quickly enough to cast a Silencing Charm before his father woke everyone along the row of houses. It wasn't for Tobias' sake so much as the neighbourhood children, who didn't need to be wrenched so rudely from their sleep only to think that Father Christmas had come next door, and he'd lost his bloody mind.

After that, Tobias had immediately started to slap Eileen around for locking him out of the house ... until Severus stopped him with a well-timed Shield Charm. Then he turned over the Christmas tree they had spent the better part of the evening decorating (which had been a great deal of fun, for once, considering Tobias left early for the pub). Instead of stopping him this time, however, Severus decided let his father get it out of his system. The sooner he was over his tantrum, the sooner they could all get back to sleep. It wasn't as if he couldn't put the tree and ornaments right in a few seconds with a series of spells, though it had even been somewhat amusing to see Tobias try to throw ornaments at Mam with the Shield Charm still in effect.

Eventually, he'd grown tired of breaking things, or the spirits had finally made him sleepy, because he stumbled toward the stairs. Severus then stood the tree back up, repaired the trunk and ornaments, and replaced everything on the branches with a few spells and lazy waves of his wand. Eileen tried tried to apologise for Tobias' behaviour, once again, saying he didn't mean it, once again. But Severus knew better. And the next morning, regular as clockwork, Tobias had said he was sorry, as always, and that it would never happen again, as always. But Severus knew better. As always. Because Tobias always said it would never happen again, and it always did.

Not that he would tell Lily any of that, of course. It wasn't something you told people, was it? 'Oh, yes -- our holiday was lovely. My father got pissed and tore up the sitting room, after an aborted attempt at trying to thump my mother, but we had a nice fruitcake from Aunt Martha. How about you?' He had mentioned that his parents argued -- on occasion, mostly as an excuse to keep Lily from wanting to visit Spinner's End -- but he couldn't tell her the whole story. She wouldn't understand, though the thought of what he didn't say made him smirk.

[OOC: Sorry about that. :-/ He was in a right mood. Can you tell?]

"Hm. They were arguing again?" Lily had heard about Severus's parents arguing since they'd become friends. She'd never met his parents, aside from a few times his mother had come to get him, but she didn't ever get a good impression about Severus's family life. She got the feeling there was a lot that he wasn't telling her, especially with the way things had been going recently, but she had learned better than to pry and would let him tell her what he wanted to.

"Do you think the new people will be out of the infirmary yet?"

Severus shrugged again and gave Lily a look that said, plainly, "Of course they were." He didn't want to talk about that, or think about it, really. He wouldn't see Mam for another three months, at least -- more if they couldn't afford a train ticket for him to come home for Easter. Her brewing business always slowed down in the spring, once the cold season had passed. There was no telling what his lout of a father would do to her in the meantime.

When Lily asked about the new students, his eyebrows rose. "That's a good question. I hadn't even thought about them over break. Surely Madam Pomfrey will have them all sorted out by now?"

If Pomfrey didn't have them sorted out by now, Lily would be concerned as to their welfare. Already, they were quarantined for much longer than Lily had seen anyone be in the hospital wing, but if this plague had killed their entire families she supposed there was reason to be careful.

"She must have. It seems like it'd be fairly easy to tell if they were infected or not considering the... effect whatever it is had on the rest of the people that got it. I do hope they are all alright."

Roaming the Corridors [open]

After he'd heaved his trunk inside the door, Peter climbed aboard the Hogwarts Express, but he left his trunk sitting where it was, for now. He didn't feel like dragging the thing behind him, up and down the corridor, whilst looking for James, Sirius, and Remus. He'd come back and get it, once he knew where they were all sitting. Down the corridor he started, ducking his head at every compartment door to glance inside. Nope, not there. Or that one. Or that one. But he'd find them soon enough. He always did.

As soon as his feet hit the stone of platform Nine and Three-Quarters Sirius took the first opportunity to get away from his parents.

Freedom at last! He thought with a smile as he climbed onto the train, trunk in tow, only to almost crash into someone's trunk. "What kind of idiot..." Sirius frowned and looked down only to realize he knew the trunk in question quite well. "Peter." Shaking his head, he pulled out his wand and levitated Peter's trunk in front of him as he fully stepped onto the train to look for his friends.

"Sirius!" Peter had seen movement out of the corner of his eye and wheeled about to find Sirius levitating his own trunk toward him. He waddled back that way -- as quickly as he could through the cramped corridor -- until he got close enough that he didn't have to yell. "Hey! How're you?" he asked, a little short of breath, all of a sudden. "Any idea where you want to sit?"

Sirius shrugged a shoulder and put Peter's trunk down on the ground, now that he'd found the proper owner. Or rather, the owner had found him.

"Any place that's empty. James and Remus not here yet?" He asked, wondering if maybe they'd snagged a compartment already.

"Haven't seen 'em," Peter said, frowning and shaking his head. He bent down to peer in the doors of compartment after compartment, until he found one that was unoccupied. "This one's free," he squeaked, a bit uncertainly, turning back to face Sirius. One empty compartment was as good as another, really, but for some reason he couldn't quite explain to himself, he still wanted Sirius' approval before entering.

Trunks still in tow Sirius walked up to where Peter was standing and just walked right in. "Brilliant." He said as he put his trunk away on the shelf above and plopped down in a window seat, putting his feet up on the bench across from him.

It was good to be back to school.

"D'you do anything fun over the break?" Peter asked, settling himself in the next seat over from Sirius' feet. He knew better than to ask, 'How was your holiday?' because knowing Sirius' family, it was dreadful. Not that Peter's had been much better, considering he was sick the whole time, and he had yet another large box of potions and pills that his mum had sent to dump in the loo.

Sirius shook his head at Peter's question. "Nah. Usual rubbish as always. Did set off some fireworks in the house...was pretty entertaining." He finished with a sly grin. Pretty entertaining had been an understatement. Though the repercussions and the yelling afterward almost made it not worth it. Almost.

Lynette had gone off to the prefect's compartment, leaving him in peace. It wasn't that his sister annoyed him, but Nevin wanted to have a nap. He'd been up most of the night, organising his trunk and keeping an eye on some new specimens. Having found an empty compartment, he stashed his things over-head and reclined across the seats on the right-hand side.

That girl (dare he call her his friend?), Elizabeth, had promised to give him a birthday present today. He was rather excited and nearly dying from the curiosity. No one at school had ever given him something without expecting a favour in return before. He was the same way, of course, but he hadn't done any of the giving so far. Though he could definitely think of a few things he wouldn't mind giving her... Nevin felt a twinge of guilt then, but talked himself out of it. He was a fifteen-year-old boy, after all. This was all perfectly normal. Wasn't it? Shortly after that thought crossed his mind, Nevin fell asleep.

Kingsley dragged his trunk to an open compartment and then tucked it out of the way with a shove. No one was here and so he decided to pull out his chess set. He had found a cheap Muggle set so that he could play against himself over the holiday after her charmed them to be unbreakable first.

Enjoying the comfort of heading back to school he set the board and began to play.

She smiled at his grin.

"My holiday was nice," she told him, "After I got my brothers to leave me alone." She walked into the compartment and puck her trunk away, sitting across from him, examining the chessboard.

"So," Elizabeth asked him, "Are we going to play?" She grinned.

He shrugged, "if you want. Do you have a set or do you want to use my charmed Muggle pieces? I think it frustrates the magical ones that I charmed them not to break, he chuckled.

He hadn't thought that he would get to play with her and so he was happy that he was going to.

He frowned in concentration as he put the Muggle pieces away and reset his own side.

"It took me a while to learn to play. Strategy takes a lot of practice for me."

He made his first move. "I'm rather surprised that my Mum bought me anything magical. She must have sent for it by owl order. I highly doubt she went to Diagon Alley. She doesn't even carry her wand anymore," he frowned unconsciously at that thought.
