“I’m not answering that.”

Severus huffed and stretched his long limbs. His gaze wandered from her face to the darkness beyond the window. Snow had been pilling up on the window sill for the past hours, finally setting the scene for Christmas.

“This is a stupid Muggle game anyway.” he groused.

“Careful, Severus.” There was a warning in Lily’s voice and a knot tightened in his stomach.

It had taken them almost a year to reconcile their friendship after he had publicly insulted her in the worst way possible during their fifth year. And although his repeated apologies had eventually lessened her resentment and allowed them to rebuild their friendship, from time to time that shadow still hung between them.

“How did we get to that subject anyway?” he stalled.

Lilly smiled. “You asked me if I had sex with James,” she reminded him helpfully.

His irritation rose. “It couldn’t have been very good, if he went off to spend Christmas at home and you chose to stay here.”

A frown accompanied an exaggerated eye roll. “You’re not going to goad me into an argument about James, Severus. Now quit stalling and answer the question.”

Lily smiled.

“Five years ago, and I was thinking of Geraldine MacCaffrey.”

“Who’s Geraldine MacCaffrey?”

“She’s a singer.” Severus straightened. “My turn. Truth or Dare?”

“Did you like it?”

“Did I like what?”

“Well, did you?” There was a stubborn set to his angular features, conveying very clearly that he wasn’t about to let the subject rest.

“It was nice.” she shrugged. “A lot better than average, from what I heard.”

Severus looked at her askance. “And what did you hear?”

She threw a pillow at his head, which he carelessly batted away. “Girls talk. Compare notes, so to speak. As to who and what, that’s none of your business.”

“You can’t blame a bloke for being curious. It’s all in good fun.”

Lily sighed uncharacteristically serious. “I wish.” Then, obviously realising how disappointed she had sounded, she tried to wave the words away.

“I meant what I said,” she explained at his curious look. “It was nice. There were candles, and music, and we did everything right, and it wasn’t too fast or too slow, it just... wasn’t...” She shrugged.

“Fun?” he asked as her voice trailed off into silence.

“It was a ‘momentous occasion’,” she said, her voice indicating that the words were a direct quote.

“I see.”

There weren’t many things that could render him speechless, but Lily had certainly managed to accomplish it.
