WHO: Victoria
WHEN: Saturday Night
WHERE: Her dorm room
WHAT: Contemplates her emotional state and takes a shaky first step that no one will ever see.
Vee had barely left her room in a week. She knew that her friends were worried about her and she understood that. But the thing was she knew she needed to get her head on straight before she said or did something that would cause irreparable damage to one of the two friendships that meant the most to her. Saffron she knew would understand it was Stephen who caused the worries. And with one glaring exception she found it impossible to lie to him and she knew that she would tell him that it was whatever happened to him last weekend that had put her over the edge, so to speak. And she also knew that was a very, very bad idea. Hence the staying in her room.
All the alone time was doing for her though was making her brood even more. When she wasn’t thinking about Stephen she was thinking about NEWTs. When she wasn’t thinking about NEWTs she was thinking about Saffron trying for a job at the apothecary. When she wasn’t thinking about that she found herself thinking more and more about her father. Whoever he was.
And that was the trouble. She had no idea how to even start looking for him because she knew nothing of him other than the fact that he was once involved with her mother. And many men had been involved with Kat Frobisher over the years. She guessed that he was probably a dark haired man because both her mother and her Nan had red hair and light eyes and something had to account for her looks. She guessed he was wealthy because Kat tended to gravitate towards wealthy men.
Finally she pulled out the journal the Stephen gave her for her birthday and inked a quill.
"Letter to an Unknown Father"
I’ve often wondered what I should call you,
What name it is that you would chose
If you knew me.
How I’ve longed for the word da
To leave my lips
And for me to know it was
My own father
I was addressing.
Do I look like you, da?
Or like some long forgotten
Branch
On your family tree?
Do I remind you of a
Favorite aunt
Or the barmy cousin everyone pretends
Not to hear?
Will I ever be your
Little girl?
Or am I truly
Alone?
Vee closed the journal and snuffed out her candle. She’d really spent enough time with her thoughts. Maybe she was finally ready to leave her room.
