nikolas vaisey doesn't need a broom to fly ([info]besserwisser) wrote in [info]wished,

Who: Nikolas Vaisey and Lucy Elkins
What: Studying the wonderful world of Animagi...and stuff.
Where: An empty classroom
When: Friday, 22 January.  Around seven o'clock.
Rating/Warnings: TBA.   Not high.

Nikolas was perched atop the large desk at the front of the classroom.  Presumably it would be occupied by a professor during class hours, but right now he was considering it a very comfortable seat.  His legs were folded in front of him and he was bent over a heavy-looking book - there were also several pieces of parchment next to him, scattered across the desk top, and an abandoned quill.  It seemed he'd been here for a while, though what he was taking notes on was anyone's guess.

He and Lucy had decided to meet up again and, he supposed, talk about what she'd been studying.  Sometimes, especially lately, he wondered why he was so interested.  It was an intriguing topic, but it wasn't something he was studying personally, and how much could he really get out of this?  Admittedly, he'd found himself paying much more attention during Transfiguration lately, taking more detailed notes, even asking more questions in the class.  The book he was reading right now, in fact, was one he'd seen mentioned in his Transfiguration textbook index - apparently it had a very detailed chapter on Animagi, regarding what determines the animal one eventually becomes.

In short, and for reasons he wasn't completely sure of, Nikolas couldn't deny that he'd been looking forward to this all day.  Maybe it was the prospect of an exciting weekend, with Quidditch and, hopefully, some time to relax.  This was just a way to start it off...well, it felt right.  Now it was just a matter of Lucy arriving.  Maybe she'd forgotten?

It had been a rather long time since their previous study session and Lucy found that she was more excited at the prospect that she ought to have been. Since their decided meeting time of 7 o'clock was chosen, she found that she was checking the watch she wore around her wrist more often than usual and that although she wasn't very hungry, she rushed right through two helpings of dinner just to duck out and prepare for the night.

But she couldn't seem too excited. Instead, she took her time in getting ready and managed to stroll in to the classroom just past 7 o'clock. Her long, blond hair was swept back into a neat chignon at the nape of her neck. Simple ballet flats and slim-fitting trousers were easy to move around in and a light, loose-fitting jumper was just comfortable enough for the night. Her bag hang at her side and a book, the one he had given her for Christmas, was in her hands.

She smiled brightly as she walked inside. Even though she was trying to seem as cool and casual as possible, it was impossible not to smile at Nikolas.

"You haven't been waiting long, have you?" she asked him, her brow creasing slightly in question.

Lucy's voice startled Nikolas out of the book, and he looked up sharply.

"Oh. Lucy!" he said. To his ears, his voice much more chipper than he had expected. Casting the book aside, Nikolas swung his legs down from the desk but otherwise remained sitting. "No, not really. Well, I got here early, but that's hardly your fault."

Eyes settled on the book in her hands. It seemed to be the one he'd sent her, and for a moment Nikolas felt compelled to grin stupidly. Luckily he was able to keep himself from doing so, and his expression indicated only that he was pleased to see her.

His head tilted a bit. "Is that the book I sent you over the holiday?"

Lucy caught his glance and looked down at the book in her hands. Although Nikolas was correct in saying that the book was slightly out-dated in terms of Animagi studies and its advances, it was still a very fascinating read. She had been reading it and re-reading since receiving it over Christmas holiday. She couldn't help but smile briefly.

"Yes, it is actually," she told him before placing it along with her bag on a desk near her. "It's a great read. Incredibly illuminating."

And he had given it to her.

But that wasn't important.

She looked toward the book on his desk and raised an eyebrow. "What are you reading?"

He looked over at the book and flipped the pages a bit.

"It's this book I saw mentioned in the one Professor Tonks has us using for class." Nikolas closed the book and held it up for Lucy to see. "There's supposed to be a chapter about - "

Stopping short, Nikolas looked down for a second. He'd been prattling on about the book and about to mention the chapter on animagi, but for some reason it suddenly seemed like a very silly thing to do. She'd probably seen it. What was he trying to do, impress her?

No, he was only trying to be helpful.

"About animagi, actually. You probably saw it..."

Lucy took a step toward the desk, her hands perching on the edge as she peered at the book. Yes, she had seen the book before and read from it quite often. She looked up toward Nikolas. She found herself quite surprised to see that he had been reading up on his own. She bit down slightly on her bottom lip before pushing herself away from the desk.

"It's a great resource," she told him, nodding her head. "I've found it really helpful. What made you pick it up?"

"Well, you know," Nikolas offered, although clearly she didn't know, or she wouldn't have asked. "I thought since we, or you, rather, were studying this. And since I drop in now and then, I might as well try to get a bit more informed on the subject."

He shrugged. "Otherwise it's just me sitting here watching you and pretending to know what your talking about, and that's sort of pointless."

Lucy leaned her bottom against the nearest desk to Nikolas. She crossed one ankle over the other as she leaned back, her hands as her support. She had to admit, she was happy to see that Nikolas had become interested in it all. It gave her a rather funny feeling, actually.

"I think that's brilliant," she told him, the enthusiasm clear from the smile on her face. "You don't know how nice it is to have someone to talk to about all of this."

Nikolas grinned back at Lucy - her words of confidence were, well, nice to hear. It pleased him to know that the fact that he was here mattered to her. A shame about her bloodline, really. Otherwise, Nikolas mused, a thought suddenly coming to him, perhaps they might...

What? Date? The idea certainly hadn't crossed his mind before. He didn't think. Nikolas made a face and gave the book one last look before pushing it aside, beneath some pieces of parchment.

"Oh! Good. Hm." Nikolas leaned back a bit, propping himself on his arms. "What about your book? Has it been useful at all? I know it's age probably means not everything is regarded anymore, but it seemed like a bit of a curiosity."

Although the book was indeed rather old, Lucy found that amongst all the theory and practices, the book offered quite a bit of insight. Even with the proper training, it was incredibly important that the right state of mind was achieved throughout the process. The book may have been lacking in modern approaches but it surely helped Lucy to focus and calm herself. She was grateful for that, she had to admit. Lately it had been hard to calm herself down in any way.

"A few of its practices have already been re-examined," Lucy told him as she pushed herself up to sit atop the desk. "But it's still a solid read in terms of theory and understanding. Some things don't change over time, it seems."

She crossed her legs Indian style as she reached toward her bag.

"Are you excited for the match this weekend?"

"Very," he said quickly. It was obvious that he'd been looking forward to it. "Can't believe it's already tomorrow, though. Felt like we had more time to practice. Sort of just snuck up on me. But hopefully we'll be ready to thrash-"

He paused, realizing he was talking about a game against her house. Well, what was she supposed to expect? He certainly didn't want Ravenclaw to win another game. Giving an apologetic smile, he shrugged.

"Heh. Sorry, sort of forgot we're playing your house," he added. "We'll trash them gently, then."

A small giggle of laughter escaped from Lucy's lips. She did her best to muffle them as she watched in amusement Nikolas' excited reaction to her question. It was nice to see him so passionate about something. Not that he wasn't a passionate person, of course. But then, she wouldn't really know if he was or not.

Although their friendship had grown over the past couple of months, there was still a lot they didn't know about each other. That much was obvious.

"Oh, it's alright," she said as she waved a dismissive hand. "I know our house is just as amped for it. It's going to be a big match, I think. I wouldn't dismiss Ravenclaw so quickly, though."

Nikolas looked skeptical, but the expression was softened by a grin that was meant to indicate he wasn't as cocky about the game as his words implied. He was glad Lucy understood he was only joking - well, partially. It really would be nice to bury the Ravenclaw team, but there was a time to keep one's opinion to oneself. Her laugh did make him feel a bit better about it, though.

"I have the feeling you'll have the school at large behind you," he mused. Slytherin never warranted the cheers of any house but their own, and Nikolas understood why. He thought it was rubbish, but it was how things had been for generations. "But I guess we'll see."

Nikolas straightened up and leaned forward, clasping his hands in front of him. He thought perhaps he should ask about her family, given the conversation last time. It seemed like a heavy topic, though, and not one he wanted to breech now. Later, maybe.

"So. How're the studies coming?"

It was often that Lucy forgot that for the most part, she and Nikolas were meant to be rivals. She knew that the match on Saturday would be rather tense. No matter, Lucy would be cheering on her house team. However, and she was unlikely to admit this, she knew she would secretly be cheering on Nikolas - if only to hope that he plays well. She had a feeling that being made Captain put just a little bit of pressure on him.

Especially as he pointed out just how disliked the Slytherin house was as a whole.

At his question, she perked up.

"Really well," Lucy told him. Lately she found that this was one topic she could get excited about. "I've been reading up on personal accounts now of some of the registered Animagi from past and present."

"Do you think so?" Nikolas asked, genuinely curious. "I haven't tried to be."

Usually he thought of himself as a fairly open person. He didn't really go looking to make friends with everyone, but generally Nikolas tried to give people the benefit of the doubt. The decisions he came to about people were arrived at quickly in most cases, which often led him to indifference when it came to most of his fellow students. There were only a few who he had any real regard for, beyond general politeness.

He chuckled. "We could play the question game if you want." Nikolas thought he was only half joking when he said this - he looked at Lucy for a reaction.

Lucy tilted her head to the side as her lips parted slightly in surprise. If there was one thing she had expected less from Nikolas in that moment, it was that response. Although Nikolas was not as serious and stoic as he appeared in class, she hadn't thought that he would be up for a game of the sort. But, she could see that it could prove to be a lot of fun and so she nodded her head enthusiastically.

"I think that would be fun," she told him as she made herself more comfortable on the desk. She tucked her legs under her small frame as she thought of the first question she could ask him. "Would you really want to?"

One of his eyebrows quirked. "Well see, you've already started, haven't you?" Nikolas put his feet on the ground and used the desk more as something to lean on than a seat. He crossed his arms. "But yes, why not? And I guess I should go first since it was my idea."

Which left the matter of what to ask. Well it shouldn't be very hard. Neither of them knew overly much about the other when it came right down to it, regardless of who knew more.

"Hmm...probably fair to start off easy. So, Lucy, what is your favorite sort of music?"

Lucy pursed her lips slightly in thought. All in all, she was open to all sorts of different types of music. Although she wasn't very partial to chamber music, she found it more sleep-inducing than anything else. She made a small clicking noise with her tongue as she finally settled on a genre she favored the most.

"Rock, mostly," she told him, nodding her head as she spoke. "I tend to favor Muggle bands mostly. But I suppose it's because I've grown up listening to them more so than like, the Weird Sisters. Elvis Costello is my favorite. But the Talking Heads are a close second."

When she realized that Nikolas would probably be rather clueless as to who she was speaking about she chuckled quietly.

"I'll play them for you sometime."

Nikolas nodded as though he knew what she was talking about, though obviously there was no way he could. Muggle bands had some very strange names. Harold seemed to have a penchant for some of them, and Nikolas could recall a few times his friend had spoken of them and he'd just shrugged it off as a quirk.

"That makes sense, if it's what you've grown up with," he said agreeably. "And I guess you probably could. Play them for me, that is."

It would be something new. Nikolas liked new things, usually. "Oh, it's your turn for a question."

She smiled broadly, her intent to fully broaden Nikolas' views on music. She had enough records stashed in her room to do so, anyway. Tugging slightly at the chignon in her hair, she thought of what a good and proper question was for the game. She supposed starting off easy was well enough.

"If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?"

She tilted her head to the side as she waited for an answer.

"Hm."

Nikolas' first instinct was to say Sweden, as some of his best memories had taken place there and it was the only other place aside from England that felt like home to him. Giving it more thought, though, he decided that he was probably going to be spending a good deal of his life there anyway. Why not pick another place entirely? He'd done a fair lot of traveling over the years, and suddenly found it difficult to pick a favorite.

"I don't know," he continued. "Travel has been a really big interest of mine, it's hard to narrow it down, but...New Zealand, maybe? We only went once but it's always stayed with me."

Aside from a few visits to her Aunt in Cape Town and a few vacations in St. Tropez, Lucy hadn't done very much traveling with her family or without. Most of her family resided in England and her time spent in Scotland was severely underused by being at Hogwarts. She looked to Nikolas with a smile as she nodded her head.

"I've heard it's really beautiful," she said. "And I imagine it's incredibly different than being here," she added with a small laugh.

"It is," Nikolas agreed, grinning as some fond memories came to mind - he'd loved the beaches and the mountains there. "I'm hoping to go back there over the summer holiday, maybe. My mum said it's a possibility that she'd have to take a trip there for business, and if I'm supposed to be getting familiar with it, I should go as well."

He felt the urge to get up an walk a bit, so he pushed away from the desk and wandered a bit closer to where Lucy was seated. "My turn..." Nikolas said. His eyes shifted up, so that it looked like he might be studying the ceiling. "If you could wake up tomorrow and suddenly possess some new ability - any kind, magical or just normal - what would you choose? Oh, aside from being an animagus, because that's too easy."

As Nikolas wandered closer toward her, Lucy felt a small tug at the pit of her stomach. She swallowed softly as she leaned back in hopes of somehow the answer coming to her. As Nikolas took away the first thing that popped into her head, she smiled ruefully in response. What could she possibly want more than already being a witch?

"Oh, I wouldn't mind being a metamorphmagus!" Lucy said suddenly excited by the idea. She truly envied Professor Tonks' ability change her appearance at will. "It might be fun to see what I would look like with blue hair, or something."

"Ahh, like Professor Tonks?" Nikolas piped up quickly. Ever since the young woman had taken up the Transfiguration post at Hogwarts, Nikolas had found he had a bit more interest in the class than normal. He certainly fell asleep less, but it was mostly due to the fact that he found Professor Tonks singularly good looking (even if her appearance could be changed at will) and enjoying watching her teach.

It was only more recently, largely thanks to Lucy, that Nikolas had begun to enjoy Transfiguration in earnest, hoping to be able to share the interests of a friend. "That is incredible, that she can do that. Too bad it's something you're born with."

"She really brings something new to the table, doesn't she?" Lucy responded as the thought came to her. She was incredibly grateful that McGonagall had been such an apt teacher, but Tonks brought a new zest to each and every lesson she taught, but Lucy supposed it was because the woman was so much closer to them in age. "I've always been fascinated to know if anyone else in her family carried the gene."

She re-positioned herself on the desk, letting her legs dangle over the edge of the desk as she thought of what best to ask Nikolas next.

"Right, so my turn," she mused aloud. "Hm. Alright, if there was one person you could have dinner with, fictional or not, who would it? And why?"
