Classes had just let out for the day, and Nikolas had decided, somewhere between listening to a lecture he wasn't very interested by and dozing off at the back of the classroom, that it might be a good day to head up to the Owlery. He had an owl of his own, who was currently at home making a delivery of sweets to his sister, so this wasn't a practical visit. Every now and then, since his third year, Nikolas had enjoyed venturing up to the owlery merely for pleasure. It got him out of the main castle for a bit, some open air, and it was nice just to watch the owls go about their daily lives. Now, especially, it might be nice to be around some creatures who weren't worried, or scared, or smug.
The walk didn't take very long, as he'd taken up a quicker pace to get out of the cold as soon as possible. When he arrived, Nikolas ducked through the door and ascended the steps. He could hear the unusual commotion before he noticed anything was wrong. The owls sounded agitated. Some were hooting loudly and incessantly, others were screeching. The stairs opened onto a landing, and Nikolas could see that there was a strange amount of feathers floating through the air, and the sound of more wings flapping than he was used to alarmed him.
He paused at the top of the stairs, apprehensive about entering the room fully. This seemed odd, but he didn't just want to leave. Settling to watch from what he thought must be a safe distance, Nikolas stood there and watched the bedlam above him head.
