Meghan definitely got all of that. She got how Penny felt about it all and she hated how she felt utterly helpless to fix it or change it or make it better. She hated that all she could do was this - a hug, a tub of her favourite ice cream, the comfort of her company.
"Now that sounds like a party," she quipped, trying to lighten an overly somber mood, though a part of her suspected her friend was serious and it was hard to make the expression in her face match the humor in her tone. She tried, though. It wasn't like her, anyway, to wear her heart on her sleeve, and she tried very hard to keep her own emotions in check so that she could be there for Penny.
"You only love me for my ice cream?" she teased, forcing a smile that was much warmer than she felt. "I'm hurt, Pen, really and truly hurt." It was obvious that she was only kidding, of course, and that their friendship ran far deeper than her willingness to pamper her with her favourite comfort foods, but as much as the situation was very, very somber, Meghan wanted to lighten the mood and make her friend smile.
