Quidditch: Ravenclaw vs. Hufflepuff
The weather was uncharacteristically warm for a December morning this close to Christmas, and the unexpected warming, even if it was only slight, seemed to lift the dark mood that seemed to sit every day over the castle now as the Quidditch teams took the field. It was nothing short of a renewed sort of excitement. There had been too much worry in the students' hearts as of late; too much death, too much studying, and they took this chance to enjoy themselves seriously in its possibilities.
Ten minutes in to the match, though, it was clear that there would be no lighthearted fun here. It was a vicious and well-played assault from the Ravenclaw team, their brooms just blurs against the sky. The team of Brocklehurst, Chambers, and Bradley flew as a well-prepared team, the star of which was quite obviously Chaser Brocklehurst, apparently on a mission to make up for her years on the reserves.
In stark comparison, the team of Cadwallader, Moon, and Smith seemed disjointed. Chaser and Captain Smith flew well, as did Cadwallader, but Hufflepuff's Moon started the game perhaps a bit distracted by the Ravenclaw blur. When Ryan managed a good shot to Moon' shoulder, knocking her from her broom, and Belby a sound Bludger to Smith that nearly took him off his broom and certainly made him a bit woozy and slower for the remainder of the game, things looked dire for Hufflepuff's hopes.
For a while, things began to change. The Seekers, from high above the other players, dove like they'd seen a flicker of gold in the bright day. Seeker Li pulled out of the Feint short, just moments before Seeker Summerby crashed, hard, into his own Keeper Jones and sent her tumbling from her broom with a scream of pain and a resounding crack of bone. Summerby managed just barely to stay on his broom, and Li moved back into position.
The game settled, then, into a quick sort of pattern. With the score steadily rising, and both team down members, the weight of the game fell to the competing Beaters. Huffplepuff’s Hopkins and Cattermole did a good job of helping Hufflepuff to run the field for several goals. However, after Chaser Cadwallader managed to take himself from the game by running into a goal-post after a particularly good shot past Keeper Cornfoot, Smith was not able to keep up with the Ravenclaw Chasers entirely on his own, and Ravenclaw’s lead steadily rose.
In the end, however, it came back again to Li and Summerby, and the next time that they dove, Li easily outflew the younger man, and her fingers closed on the Snitch.
Final score after 2 hours and 12 minutes of game play, and quite a lot of injuries: Ravenclaw 270, Hufflepuff 80.
