Who: Niki Urquhart and Braxton Hicks Derrick.
When: September 7th. Afternoon.
Where: Braxton's estate.
What: Niki movies in. Braxton is thrilled.
Rating: Low.
Status: Closed/Complete.

Niki had been fairly nonplussed at coming home and finding his things in the hallway. He really would have (attempted to) slept in the tree if Braxton hadn't offered (told) him to stay at his place.

He didn't have a lot of things. The furniture had come with the flat, so they stayed with the flat, which meant it was just his clothes and other personal effects, of which he didn't have loads. He packed his clothes into a suitcase that was much larger on the inside than it seemed on the outside. His various magical books and supplies went into another bag, and he still had his trunk from school, which had all sorts of odds and ends (heavy on the 'odd' part) in it.

Once everything was ready to go, Niki put a charm on the trunk to float it. His owl, in his cage, rested on top of the trunk and was currently making annoyed noises as Niki guided everything along, his broomstick tucked under his arm.

It had taken a trip in a magical cab, but eventually, he ended up outside of Braxton's sprawling house. Juggling his bags and guiding the trunk (and owl) along, he went up to the door and then set things down on the doorstep so that he had a hand free to knock with.

Even though Niki didn't seem very phased by the fact that he no longer had a place to live, Braxton was less than pleased. He had planned to go to the apartment building and set a few things straight with the people who managed it, but he had been advised by his attorney that was witness to his raging that it was probably not the wisest thing for him to do, considering his fragile deal with the Ministry as it was. No need in forcing him right back into Azkaban. Braxton really did loathe that place.

Needless to say, by the time Niki showed up at his place, he had vented out his frustrations on rather unfortunate and entirely replaceable objects in one of his less-used rooms. He just left it how it was, and knew that Quirk would clean things up later. The little house elf had been preparing a few rooms for Niki to occupy that day, and the time had finally come.

He was still impeccably dressed when he heard Niki's arrival, and he waited in the foyer while Quirk answered the door, helping bring in Niki's things, "Your rooms have been set up already, Niki," Braxton informed him as he was led in, "We'll work on finding some place more permanent in a few days."

Really it was for the best. The flat that Niki had been living in was not exactly very nice. It was small, cramped, old and dirty. Not that Niki minded, or even seemed to notice, but really, it wasn't the place for someone from his background.

His mother, for one, would be very glad that he was out of there. She worried so about Niki and his odd ways, but didn't say anything. With her husband, Niki's father, in Azkaban, Niki was all that she had.

When the door opened, Braxton on the other side, Niki gave one of his slightly skewed grins. "Hi," he said. In contrast, he was messily dressed, in a black shirt that seemed made for someone twice his size, and black trousers with rips in them. He pushed at the floating trunk to guide it through the door (his owl squwaking once as he did), letting Braxton get the bags.

"Thanks. For letting me stay here."

Looking down at the bags that he apparently had been charged with, Braxton didn't make a move to take them, but rather gave a silent communication to Quirk who immediately worked his special House Elf magic and disappeared up the stairs and down the left corridor with Niki's things.

He simply looked back at his cousin with a bit of a grin, trying to remind himself not to be tense, that this would work out just fine. Honestly, he probably could have just sent Niki back to his mother's for a few days, but he felt some godforsaken need to provide for his batty cousin this time. Still...he wasn't much of one into enabling his family members. They needed to be able to support themselves.

"You're welcome. I really couldn't let you sleep in a tree, after all...it's just not proper," he said with a slight bit of an arrogant air. He started to walk a bit leisurely towards where Quirk had taken Niki's things, making sure that his cousin was following him.

Once they reached the rooms, he looked around, pleased with the dark, but warm decor. It was all clean-cut and polished, "Is this to your liking?"

"Birds do it," Niki pointed out, and that seemed to make it perfectly acceptable in his mind. Of course Niki had a rather odd fascination with birds of all sorts. There was just something so intriguing about them. Plus, they got to play, without even the need of a broomstick, and that was pretty fantastic.

He followed along, guiding his floating trunk with nudges of his fingertips as they made their way along down the corridor until they arrived at the room - his new room.

Niki let the trunk preceed him into the room and then stepped in and looked around. It was a far cry from the flat he had been living in. It was open and clean with nice, solid furniture.

He grinned. "This is great!" he said, because compared to his flat it was a palace.

"Yes, but you're a wizard, not a bird," Braxton pointed out. Sometimes, he seriously considered taking that damn wand of Niki's and snapping it in half...and then snapping those halves into innumerable pieces. Therein lie the root of the madness, he thought. But every time he so much as began to utter such a thought, it put his cousin on the offensive...

So he squelched the thought and decided he'd just ponder it later, without making his cousin pitch a fit and end up sleeping in a tree anyway.

"I'm glad you like it," he sincerely replied, a small grin on his features. The sentence, short as it was, sounded so normal. He couldn't help but appreciate it.

"Any room on this hall is open should you want to wander. The right corridor, however, has a few off limit rooms, including the ones we were speaking about with those boring meetings, you remember? If you need anything, Quirk will help you. I'll be around quite a bit, but I'll be at the club too," these were just things he needed to go ahead and say, even if Niki knew most of them anyway. It never hurt to reiterate some things.

"Maybe I could be both," Niki suggested, fingers sliding up and down one of his arms, imagining what it would be like to have feathers. Glossy ones that would flutter and spread and let him fly. But no, he was a Wizard. Just a Wizard.

He was grinning too and he went further into the room and sat down on the edge of the bed, bouncing a little bit, feeling the firmness and the give of the mattress. Oooh, he liked that.

After a moment of distraction, he got up so he could follow Braxton around a little bit more. He had been through his cousin's house before, and had a good knowledge as to which rooms were off limits, but he listened anyway.

"Quirk is a funny name," he said idly.

"Not unless you're an animagus, and then you could only be one at a time," Braxton mused, but he really shouldn't be planting such thoughts in his cousin's head. He didn't want him trying dangerous, complicated transfiguration. Especially not in his house.

He didn't pay much heed to the momentary childish antics. After a while, there were just certain things that he had chosen to overlook rather than dwell on. He had to acknowledge that sometimes, Niki was going to fight him tooth and nail on things, and sometimes they weren't significant enough to reprimand.

"Perhaps, but Quirk is a House Elf, and most of them have unconventional names," he said decidedly, glancing about the room.

"Should I leave you to get settled?"

Well there was an idea that wiggled into Niki's head, and would probably take roots there over the next little while. Then he really could be a bird.

Hmmmm.

"True. Ours had a funny name too." Still had a funny name, because the House Elf was still there, at the family home, taking care of his mother.

He glanced around the room as well. Seeing his trunk, his bags, everything needing to be unpacked. His owl needing to be let out of the cage so he could go flying.

"Okay," he said with a bobbing nod of his head, lifting a hand to flick longish black hair from his eyes. "Thanks Braxton. This is great." He sounded almost normal for a moment.

He couldn't make himself retreat for a few moments, struck by how normal his cousin sounded, his gaze lingering on the features that now disguised the boy that he remembered. Braxton would give almost anything to put him right again.

There weren't many people that he would say that about. He could care less about most, but he cared, inexplicably, for Niki. They had grown up together...been friends and almost brothers all their lives. It hurt him to not have the same boy around anymore. Sometimes, it was like Niki was gone...like he was dead and replaced by some imitation. But it wasn't like that, and Brax knew it. It was the only reason he tolerated this version.

He shook himself silently, motionlessly, out of his thoughts, "You're welcome, Niki," he said almost softly, "I'll be in my study if you need me," and then he excused himself from the room, wandering down the long corridor and hoping...hoping that maybe there would be some way to honestly bring Niki back.

"Okay," Niki said in that same almost-normal way, and then he blinked, and the normality seemed to vanish back behind the glaze of his eyes. He watched as Braxton went, and then he turned to his room to start unpacking and arranging things.
