Tonks lingered in the background as Remus explained everything to Gabe. She didn't like coming here, didn't like imagining everything Remus had to go through, and she wished not for the first time that she could make things more comfortable for him. But she didn't want to insult him, and really, the only thing the wolf would do with a mattress was tear it to shreds. And then he'd have nothing to lay on.
A bit taken aback by Gabe's question, she bent down and scooped him up, balancing him on her hip. He was almost too big for this now, given how small she was, but he didn't seem to mind too much.
"I think you know the answer to that, bug," she said with a grin, morphing her nose into a pig's snout. "It's not as brilliant as a wolf, but I guess it'll have to do."
She glanced at Remus and then said to Gabe, "This place is off-limits, okay, Gabe? Not even when Daddy isn't here, you can only come here when one of us is with you. It's so you don't get hurt, and we won't be really scared, all right?" She pressed her lips to his forehead. "Can you promise me that?"
