Sam's turn!
Sam leaned back against the wall of her personal stall and took in a slow, deep breath. It was all about getting her mind straight, Seamus was right. Obviously he was right, he was the only one of their lot that had managed to fully transform so far. The only logical assumption was that whatever he was doing or thinking was right and whatever she was thinking and doing wasn't. Sam squinched her eyes shut for a moment and scolded herself; that was the opposite of what she was supposed to be thinking at the moment! Positive things, she reminded herself, there's a purpose.
Forgetting about the others for a moment, Sam closed her eyes and tried to call to mind what was important to her. Ginny flashed in front of her eyes instantly, Ginny who was always ready to protect her and had her back. Whom she loved and worried about and wanted to make proud just about more than anything. And her family, her siblings, Chester and Mallory, separated from her but still part of all she had left and Quincy here at school with her. Quincy who, no matter old he got, was still her baby brother and in her mind would always need her to look out for him. And her Mum... Sam never doubted that whatever had happened to her had involved Death Eaters in some way but now Carrow's ugly face floated up in her mind's eye, taking the blame for the thing she didn't even want to think about. Rage started to boil up in her gut, pure emotion that Sam tried to fuel into determination by focusing on the idea that this moment could be one of the most important steps to stopping the Death Eaters.
Steeling herself, Sam downed the potion and focused on her thoughts, clenching her eyes tightly. She pushed aside all the doubts and thoughts about all the previous half-formed transformation and thought about her family and friends and her increasingly burning desire to fight back. She allowed several long minutes to pass before she felt confident it was time for the attempt. The spell was second nature to her, just like the pain of constricting bone, muscles and flesh was. And while it felt like it always did it also felt slightly different.
She wouldn't have been able to describe it aptly but to her it was the physical feeling of that moment when you stop focusing on individual details and look at the big picture instead. The way it feels when everything you had kept missing suddenly slid into place like it had been patently obvious the whole time. Her hands shrunk and turned into paws, her nails elongating into fine, sharp claws, her arms shortened and her torso lengthened even as her entire body shrunk to a few dozen centimetres. She was on all fours by the time her face squashed in on itself and her ears popped and, her least favourite part, her tailbone expanded exponentially, turning into a tail that almost doubled her length. Even though it felt like slow motion, it was over in a couple of moments and Sam opened her eyes to a world that was suddenly less colourful than it had been.
I did it, she thought, simultaneously amazed and shocked with joy. She spun around in a circle, trying to look at herself before she remembered her mirror and reared back on her hind legs. Looking in a mirror and not seeing the usual reflection you were accustomed was slightly jarring, but it was easily overwhelmed but the replacement. She had a snow-white belly that she could only imagine was as fuzzy as it looked and the rest of her was a rich brown, just like her hair normally was. She immediately fell in love with her tiny, black nose and opened her mouth to find the sharp teeth she had at the ready. Merlin! I'm adorable she thought as the giddiness settled in and she fell back to her paws, bounding around in another circle. I did it! I fucking did it!
