CAKE AT GYM?
Who: Garth, Purple, Ester
What: Introductions, CAKE
Where: Apricot Gym
When: Late morning/early afternoon
Why: Everyone loves cake.

Purple had been right. It was probably for the best that the gym was closed today. It would allow him to introduce the new breeder to the area she would be working in without distractions and it was pleasant to read uninterrupted.

Hoppip was playing with the Budew he intended to introduce to the breeder on the table in front of him as he leafed through his book. He watched then over the top of the pages, honestly more interested in them than he was in its contents. He wondered who would arrive first, Purple or the breeder.

Ester was in a hurry that morning. She'd ridden up all the way from Chestnut town and was slightly exhausted and sweaty. She knew right away she was going to need to take a shower. Heading over to the pokemon center to freshen up she introduced herself to the nurse there and then quickly took a shower to freshen up. Pulling on a pink and pink, purple plad skirt with a light purple sleeveless top and dressy shoes. She quickly pinned up her hair as she wanted to make a good impression with Dr. Mattock when she came.

Walking quickly to the gym Ester stared at the maze and then made a face. Did he really expect her to go through that? Well maybe this is a test to see if I can handle it.

About half way through...she ran into the beedrills...and let out a scream.

Purple had started out in the early morning hour, with Buzz, Pie and Toxic flying above head, soaring and enjoying the early morning freshness. It was something Purple had promised himself every once and a while and the promise of sitting down with friends was always good. Plus, he wanted to make sure the bug Pokémon in the hedge maze were doing alright.

The (with little frosting and made with wheat flour and every other healthy substitute he could think of) cake was strapped securely to his back as he set off with rising sun on the hiker trail.

Having trekked the route a couple of times, (yes, looking for bug Pokémon), Purple knew a couple of shortcuts and within about 3 hours, he had made it into Ossia National Park, where he rented a bike and peddled the rest of the way to Apricot. The sun had just settled in the sky as he arrvied in the hedge maze and began checking the known nests.

Toxic, Pie and Buzz zoomed off into the maze as well to look for friends they had made. Purple wasn't in the maze for five minutes when he heard the scream and he grinned. Another trainer most likely lost and stumbled on a Bug Pokémon. Purple hurried over to the area and saw the girl and he smiled, "Need some help miss?"

Ester was backed up into one of the hedges nearly falling over. Her face was twisted into fear as she cringed. It wasn't that she hated bug pokemon, she just couldn't stand Beedrill, combees were cute, beedrills terrifed her. Namely because as a child one of the older coordinators at a contests had been annoyed with Ester, she couldn't remember what she'd done exactly, but the cooridinator had sent his beedrills to chase after her. Ever since then she'd had a terrible phobia of them.

Looking up she was suprised to see a good looking young man coming to her rescue. As usual, Ester couldn't help but blush seeing him but then went pale again when one of the drills got close to her. "Nnnnn...Yes...please..."

Purple flashed her one of his patented smiles and walked forward, calling Pie, who flew over the hedge.

"Pie, go ask that Beedrill to leave this poor young woman alone and explain that she's terrified of it." Purple asked his friend calmly, smiling at the girl.

Purple held out his hand with a smile, "Can I accompany you out the maze mam?"

"Ah sure, I guess so," Ester took his hand and sighed as Pie talked to the beedrill. "Man that was scary. I didn't expect there to be a hive in here. I should see if Dr. Mattock's has a way to go around this section of the maze."

She fummed some, "You would think he had another door on this building."

Purple chuckled as he lightly held onto her hand began to traverse the maze.

"I just memorized how to get around the maze, so if he does you'll have to ask." Purple commented, smiling at the girl, "So what's you name?"

"Ester Ribola," she introduced herself and checked her watch. "Oh jeeze! I'm going to be late! Urgh and I heard Dr. Mattock is a stickler for being on time."

She turned and bowed some, "Thank you so much for helping me!"

"You heard correctly." Garth said quietly, emerging from the hedges. He had come to investigate the scream.

"What happened?"

"Ahhhh...Ahhh...Dr. Mattock! I'm so sorry!" She bowed and smiled at him. "I'm Ester Ribola, and I'm the new Breeder. I'm so sorry I'm late. I didn't realize you had to go through the hedge maze to get here."

"You don't. There's a side door."

"Do you mean to tell me I didn't have to go through the maze and run into the Beedrill," she twiched and scowled just a bit. "Why didn't the nurse at the center tell me. Ugh, she must have thought that I was a trainer, even though I told her I was the breeder."

Ester looked at Garth, "Well then I am sorry I'm late but I didn't know where this other door was. This totally sucks, I'm late, and I'm embraressed, worst day of this week. Not to mention Dr. Yew wasn't too receptive of me when I went to see him early this morning."

"Excuses." Garth said, turning back to head toward the gym, the Budew hiding in his hands. The hoppip on his shoulder, however, was much less afraid of the people and leapt off his shoulder, floating over to greet Purple and Ester.

"Dr. Yew does not react well to distractions. I don't particularly blame him, his work is very important. You should distract him only for matters of utmost importance."

Purple waved a greeting at Garth, but he seemed busy scolding Ester, so he held back, instead smiling as Hopip floated over.

"Good day to you Hopip, you're looking healthy and happy today!"

Pie nodded, his entire body moving up and down, "Freee~"

"I wasn't trying to bother him. My mentor told me to see him because she said he needed to meet the newest breeder about the starters I would be helping with." Ester looked down. "I thought it was important. Huh?"

She saw Hoppip float over to Purple and his butterfree and smiled, "So cute. They're adorable together."

Purple grinned, "I'm assuming you mean Pie and Hopip?"

"Hum...of course, who else would I mean." Ester smiled and looked over at Garth then at Purple. "I'm assuming you came here to see Dr. Mattock for some reason. I won't get in your way I hope. And thank you again for saving me earlier."

Garth was waiting at the gym's main doors for Ester and Purple. As Pie approached him Hoppip leapt off the bug pokemon toward her trainer, still chirping. Garth openned his hands to catch her and the Budew that was hiding there cowered for a few seconds until Hoppip landed and then pulled Hoppip's leaves around herself.

"I'm afraid tea will be delayed for a while, Anthony. I need to introduce the breeder to her workspace." He said calmly. "Miss Ribola, please follow me."

"Anthony...as in the Sienna gym leader? Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry, I didn't recognize you!" Ester looked flustered. "I didn't realize...I must have sounded so silly to you."

She looked at Garth and nodded, "Comeing Dr. Mattock." A smile was turned to Purple before she went in. "I hope I can see you later."

Hoppip landed on Ester's shoulder, using her leaves to point to her trainer in case Ester hadn't seen him.

"This is the breeding centre." He said once Ester had caught up, motionning toward a second small building attached to the gym. Unlike the gym itself it was not make of glass, though the wall that seperated the two was. Inside the building everything was surgical white except for a few posters on the walls, illustrating pokemon's dietry needs and breeding groups, a stark contrast to the bountiful indoor garden that was the gym itself. "I am sure you will find anything you need in there. You will inform me if anything is needed. All equipment has been cleaned and sterilized. This should be one of the safest possible enviornments in Shiko for eggs to hatch. However due to the health benefits of fresh air, excersize and communication with a wide range of other pokemon you are permitted and encouraged to allow young pokemon to move freely around the gym under supervision as soon as they are old enough to walk."

As they walked Ester noted her new surroundings and gave a nod to his statement. Following quickly she doubled her pace as Garth had longer legs making it so that Ester had to walk twice as fast. When they reached the double glass doors that slid open she tilted her head to look around him. She gasped and hurried inside.

Ester looked around the facility in awe, it was huge and nothing like she was used to. This was all for her? It was strange having such a place and she beamed at him brightly then to Garth suprise she hugged him tighly smiling. "Okay then Dr. Mattock. I'll make sure to keep it clean and perfect. Though um...I'm going to have to add color to it. Pokemon, especially when they're babies need color to make them feel at ease. A nice soft yellow or blue will do And I'm glad there are windows here. Oh I didn't look..."

She rushed over to a pair of side doors and sighed happily. A field was fenced off with just enough space for the young pokemon to wander. Looking over at Garth she added, "Younger pokemon need to be away from the older ones till they get their bearings. That's why I'm glad this is here. It lets them gain knowlege without getting into trouble."

Ester grinned happily, "I'll be sure to keep a tight leash on them. Um...is it okay to have my pokemon wander, I have a skitty, a lopunny, and a cleffa whos still very young."

"If you must, do it with posters or decorations. Nothing permanent. The room is painted white to meet the standards for breding enclosures for starter pokemon maintained by this facility and by pokemon league facilities in the other regions."

"Younger pokemon spend all their growing likes in the presence of older pokemon in the wild. With proper supervision it is unharmful. Allowing them to wander here will be acceptable if you doubt your capability to keep watch over them, of course."

Garth thought. "As long as they cause no damage and do not provoke the Gym pokemon or harm the babies it will be fine." He said. He looked around for a second and then turned back to Ester, speaking quickly and quietly. "Within the next few days you will be provided with lists of Togekiss, Raichu and Roserade owners - trainers, coordinators and fellow breeders - who have volunteered to allow thier pokemon to be bred. You will be expected to select ideal parents with traits you consider beneficial to the next generation. When you have made selections I will arrange for you to meet with the pokemon in question so you can observe it in person. I will likely accompany you to ensure that the pokemon is healthy enough that breeding it would not be potentially harmful. Have you any questions so far?"

"None so far, you seem to have everything in order I guess. Not much for me to ask about really," she shrugged. "What about music or other things, and how often will you be watching me?"

"Music is acceptable provided it isn't loud enough to put the hearing of the young ones at risk. I will leave that to your judgement." He nodded to himself. "I would hope that you are capable enough that constant supervision is unneccisarry. I will supervise your work as much as I am able for the first litters and from then on will probably check on you in mornings and in evenings. As I am the supervising physician for this facility you will be given a number to contact me at any time in the event of an emergency. If that is all your questions then I will provide you with more information as it becomes relevant. For the next few days until we recieve information on potential parents I have a task for you"

He placed the Budew on the table. Hoppip moved with her and the Budew remained hidden by her leaves.

"This is Budew. She is very young, she was injured quite gravely at the hands of an irresponsible trainer who then abandonned her here. Her condition has imporved a great deal, thankfully, and she is no longer in any danger but..." He paused, realizing that Ester probably couldn't see the Budew. "...She's easily scared. Shy. She's behind Hoppip's leaves."

If Ester were to move Hoppip's leaves to look at the tiny pokemon, she would notice that the Budew was covered with awful-looking burn scars.

Ester leaned over some and gently pushed the leaves aside and gasped, "She...she's...She's adorable!"

Smiling cheerfully she cooed to the little budew. "Hello there little one. Do you have a name? You're so cute."

She could see the burn marks and scars and looked at Garth Seriously, "What did they do to her. She looks like she was in a fire."

Garth was releived by Ester's reaction to the Budew. In some ways that had been a test. If she had reacted with disgust she would be unsuitable for this job.

The budew suddenly looked terrified and looked around madly for the leaves that suddenly weren't hiding her anymore. before dashing behind Hoppip, peering out from behind the other pokemon with mild curiosity when referred to as 'cute'.

"As far as I am aware she belonged briefly to a trainer who's irresponsible nature resulted in a fire here some weeks ago. She was abandonned when the trainer was informed that those scars are likely to be permanent. She's been in my care since but I'm afraid I lack the time to help her recover. She requires a lot more attention than I am capable of giving to her if she's ever going to be able to function well when faced with humans again. Consider this a test of your ability to raise difficult pokemon. Some pokemon are born with similar problems, after all."

Ester nodded some looking up at Garth and smiled in a certain way. "I'll do my best. Is it okay if I name her? I really do like her, but...if I'm going to keep her I want her to have her own name so it makes her unique."

She looked at the little Budew and ducked down to slip under the table and come up on the other side carefully peering at her.

"Hey there little one, don't be so shy...you need a name...and a good one. We're going to show that old trainer of yours you're as vibrant and exciting as any other Budew. You're just a little rosie posey aren't you...."

She grinned and snapped her fingers low so the noise didn't startle the smaller pokemon. "Hey I know...her name can be Rosie."

'Rosie' stared at Ester, not sure whether to move.

"It's okay." Garth said in a tole that was slower and more gentle than the one he had been speaking to Ester with. "She wants you."

The budew looked between Garth and Ester as if still unsure what to do until Hoppip gave her a gentle shove with one of her leaves and she stumbled forward and then ran forward, clambering onto Ester and trying to hide in her hair.

"If it's not yet clear," Garth said, tone returning to normal. "She's quite concious of her scars. She dislikes being looked at. Hopefully she'll grow past that in your care. If you can make her comfortable with interaction with humans and pokemon then I doubt you'll have too much difficulty with pokemon that have naturally shy or feirce temperaments."

Ester giggled some when Rosie hid behind her hair and rubbed her hand gently against the small budew, "Don't be so scared Rosie, you're an awesome looking pokemon. You're unique."

She looked up at Garth and nodded, "I'll be sure to take extra care of her. Oh, we should be seeing how Anthony is doing. It's rather rude of us to be leaving him out."

Ester grinned at Garth, "I hope that we can become friends Dr. Mattock's." She patted Rosie on the head, "Come on Rosie we're going to get some cake."
