The wine sent through the Gate by General O’Neill wasn’t as sweet as Rodney McKay thought it should be. There was a certain bitterness to it, and he had to wonder if it was because of what all of them had just endured during their first few days in Atlantis, or because the General was too cheap to buy something good. It didn’t really matter, though, since he had never been a big drinker.
Setting the metal cup aside, Rodney picked up a place and filled it with the small pieces of chicken the dining hall had sent to the terrace. Some of the Athosians looked at him as he started to eat. Rodney merely narrowed his eyes at them, which seemed to give them the hint to bug off. After all, he’d had a hand in saving the city so he deserved all the food he wanted.
But, Rodney also knew he wasn’t the only one who had helped save it. Caitlin O’Neill had a lot of do with it, too. Even though her specialty was bio-systems, she helped him figure out how to release the city from its underwater lock. Of course, her having the natural ATA gene helped matters, too. Rodney hated that he didn’t have it but didn’t mind if Caitlin did. In all honesty, he didn’t mind what Caitlin had at all - she was beautiful and smart and funny. She could be covered in warts and he would still want to be knew her.
Caitlin and him, along with Carson Beckett, had spent a great deal of time together at the Ancient lab before coming to Atlantis. Rodney found he rather enjoyed their company, even if he enjoyed it a bit too much. Both of them were beautiful in their own way. He had fallen for Carson’s dimples and blue eyes, while becoming fond of Caitlin’s smile and the quiet solace she seemed to offer anyone who needed it. It was strange liking two people at once.
Not that anything would ever come of it. Threesomes only happened in cheesy porns, not in real life.
But it didn’t bother Rodney. Carson and Caitlin were his friends first and foremost. He’d never really had friends before so it was a nice change. Even if he would never admit to it and he annoyed them at times.
After finishing off a piece of chicken, Rodney looked around and narrowed his eyes when he saw Grodin was chatting Carson up. With his plate still in his hand, Rodney stalked over to where the two men were standing. Grodin raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms as he locked eyes with Rodney.
“Doctor Wilson was asking about you,” Rodney lied as he nodded toward the woman in question.
Grodin looked from Carson to Doctor Wilson and back again. “I’ll talk to you later, Carson,” he said before walking off.
Rodney moved to Carson’s side and grinned. “Hey,” he cheerfully said. His cheer quickly deflated when he glanced across the terrace and saw Caitlin chatting with John. What in the hell? Why did all the women flock to Sheppard? “Why is she talking to him for? She better not be falling for his Captain Kirk charm!”
