When they got nearer the city, Kyri stared in amazement at the building that started to surround them. Evan had showed her pictures and video, of course, in preparation for their visit, but those didn't even begin to approach what it actually felt like to be there. In one way, it was unbelievable, and in another, it was almost overwhelming. And when Evan hit the button to raise her window, she looked over at him and nodded, remembering what she had read about pollution on Earth.
Soon, they were pulling in front of a house. And when the woman came hurrying out of the house, Kyri could immediately see that this was Evan's mother. She had the same smile he did, and the same expressive blue eyes. Before she could say hello to her, she was being pulled into a hug.
"It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Lorne," she said.
"Oh, please, call me Mom," Marie told her, reaching up to cup her cheek for a moment. "I can't wait to get to know you. Although Evan's gushed about you in his video letters."
Kyri found herself blushing at that as she looked over at her husband.
"Come on in. I've made dinner, and it should be about ready. Figured we can eat and catch up. Do you like chicken, Kyri?"
