Caitlin felt uncomfortable.
She knew it wasn't because this was the first time she had been to the lab area since the explosion. Nor was it because it was the first time she had been away from Shaun for more than a few hours since his birth. The infant was with her father, and she trusted him with Shaun. No, whatever was making her feel like this was much deeper than what had happened several weeks before. Caitlin felt like she was...changing.
It started a few days before when Erin lied to her about getting into the cookie jar. The little girl swore she hadn't, but Caitlin could smell the sweet scent of chocolate chips coming from the girl, even though she was on the other side of the room. And, it didn't stop there. Caitlin could smell things she hadn't smelled before. She could tell when Shaun needed a change before she even stepped into the nursery. And she could smell Rodney, Carson and Kade.
All of them had different smells. Rodney smelled like jello and worry; Kade smelled like copper and authority; and Carson - oh, Carson smelled the best. He smelled like comfort and love and sweets. And Caitlin had become attached to it.
Her attachment to Carson had almost become territorial. She made sure Kade and Rodney couldn't sleep by him at night, and she made sure she got to always sit with him. She thought all the smells, and her heightened since of sound, were part of the connection. She had to believe it was part the connection.
Then her mouth started to hurt. A dull pain in her upper gums. Caitlin pushed it aside and made an appointment to see the city's dentist.
But today everything seemed to be crashing around her. She felt like she was about to crawl out of her skin, and it was frustrating. The only comfort she had was the fact she could smell Carson, even though he was all the way in medical. However, her comfort flew out the window when another scent mingled with Carson's. Caitlin didn't like it so she stood from her chair and went down to medical.
When she got to the doorway, Caitlin softly growled when she saw Doctor Woods standing next to Carson as they looked at a microscope. To the naked eye the two just looked like two co-workers working on something, but Caitlin could hear the way Doctor Woods' heart would beat faster when Carson stood close to her. Without hesitation, Caitlin walked into medical and squeezed her way between Woods and Carson.
"He's married," Caitlin merely said.
"I wasn't doing anything," Woods said.
"Don't lie," Caitlin said as she lowered her gaze. "Leave."
Woods stared at her for a moment before dumbly nodding. "Leave, yes," she said as she picked up her things before walking out.
Caitlin turned around and smiled at Carson. "I missed you," she said before wrapping her arms around him, and nuzzling her nose against his clothes. Her Carson smelled so wonderful.
"Cait?" Kade said as he stood from where he was sitting. Caitlin looked at him and saw the worried look on his face. "What was that?"
She ignored him and looked at Carson again. "I want to go home. I'm tired and I want to spend time with you before Rodney gets home," she said.
