Kyri took a deep breath and reached up to gather her hair together, pulling it off her neck for a few moments before letting it go. She then pushed back her stool from the counter and stood up.
All day, she had felt distracted and warm, wanting nothing more than to be out away from the lab with Evan. At first, she had thought it because she and the others in the animal science department had been so busy recently, rebuilding the lab following the explosion four weeks before. The loss of Willis had hit all of them pretty hard.
But then she had found herself daydreaming. About very intense, physical moments with her husband. And that was when she had realized that this wasn't just about being busy or distracted.
When she got back to her and Evan's quarters, she went into the bathroom and turned on the water, running it as cold as she could before splashing her face. She then cupped some in her hand and pressed it to the back of her neck. Looking at herself in the mirror, she could see how flushed she was and knew there was no doubt. She had been meaning to bring this up with Evan, but she had thought they would have more time and with everything that had happened, it just hadn't seemed to be the right time.
They would definitely have to discuss it now, though. She wasn't sure why this had happened earlier than expected, but it had.
She was just coming out of the bathroom when she felt her husband's presence and heard him calling his name. Before she could stop herself, she almost pounced him, kissing him deeply as she pressed against him. After a few moments, she gasped and pulled back, looking at him.
"I'm...I'm sorry," she said. "Evan, we...we need to talk. I know we haven't talked about it yet, but...I didn't expect this to happen for another few months, and with everything that happened." She took a deep breath. "I'm going into heat. All Lykaios females do, once an annual cycle after they hit maturity. Something's...something's made me start early."
