Sam nodded at Fred before taking a sip of her beer. "That was one of the biggest problems we had with getting the Gate program off the ground," she told her. "The device that provides the Gate with power was either destroyed or taken when Ra left, but we at least had the coverstone with the inscription on it, so we were able to figure out what it was."
She looked at Daniel and shook her head. "And no, we can't plug it in. It took years for us figure out a system. Years, a lot of money and a lot of support from the government and the Air Force."
When Fred went to call her friend, Sam nodded. Reaching over, she took a slice of pizza since she hadn't eaten lunch yet. She saw Daniel smile at her, and she smiled back. A part of her ached, though, because she wanted to be with her husband. She wanted to kiss him and hug her daughters.
She had just finished off her piece of pizza when Fred returned and asked about the power upgrade. "Basically, from what I understood, it was to make the Gate more efficient. It draws a lot of power, especially when we dial Earth, and even though your--the other you--your crystals keep us powered, we were looking for ways to make the charge last longer."
