Max shifted uncomfortably in the chair as Woosley continued to reprimand for her latest report. She turned her head slightly, and looked out into Operations, glad Chuck had allowed her to take the call in private. The last thing Max needed was for everyone in the city to hear what Woosley was saying.
"Doctor Pace! Are you even listening to me?" Woosley demanded.
Turning her head, Max looked at the screen again. "Yes. Sorry," she quietly said.
"According to your report, when Colonel Sheppard and Doctor Sheppard went missing two weeks ago, the Daedalus was used to rescue them from a race that wasn't even dangerous!" Woosley barked.
"Yes, Sir, but--."
"You haven't done anything you were supposed to do. Atlantis is in worse shape now than it was when you arrived! Have you even did what we requested during our last conference?" he asked.
"No," Max said. "I'm not going to kick people out of the city just because they're from this galaxy. Atlantis is their home, too. Many of them have family and friends here, and I'm not going to take that away from them."
Woosley narrowed his eyes before his lips curled into a smile. "Very well, Doctor Pace. The IOA figured you wouldn't do as you were told. Effective immediately, you are no longer the IOA liaison. And, since you still have several projects to finish, you are to stay on Atlantis until they are finished. You will not receive your funding for your bridge," he said before he learned closer to the camera. "You've made a grave mistake, Doctor Pace. No one will ever respect you again. You should just stay on Atlantis and never come back." He sat back and folded his hands on the desk in front of him. "I'll send word through to Colonel Jackson and tell her you're her problem now."
Max opened her mouth to defend herself but Woosley cut the connection, and the screen went black. With a blank look on her face, Max stared at the screen. Part of her was relieved she was no longer the liaison. The position had brought her nothing but grief, but now she was stuck there - in a city where most of the people didn't like her. And to top it off, she was pretty sure the only reason the IOA picked her was because she wanted the funding so badly.
They had used her.
With a sigh, Max stood and wandered out of the room. Operations was quiet since it was late at night and most of the main personnel were in bed. She thanked Chuck, and started toward her quarters. She would talk to Colonel Jackson in the morning, and tell her everything the IOA had wanted her to do in case they decided to send another liaison through.
When she got to her quarters, Max suddenly remembered she had forgotten to pull the crystal out of the panel before leaving. Running her hand in front of it, she sighed when it wouldn't open. "Great," she sighed.
Max turned around, knowing there was no sense in fighting with the door. She would just go spend the night in the small room that was just off the gym. When she got there, she walked through the gym's main part and slipped into the side room. It was that big; big enough for a few people to be in. With a sigh, she pulled out the sleeping bag she kept there and unrolled it. Max then climbed inside it, and squeezed her eyes shut.
