Crossing his arms as Fred spoke to Maya, John glanced back at the door. It really did feel like they had been pulled into a real life version of The Godfather, especially when she talked about how her father wanted her to give him a grandchild.
When Fred asked him to talk to her about fathers and their daughters, John nodded and took a deep breath.
"Well, I think part of the reason fathers are protective of their daughters is because of what the universe can be like for girls. Fathers who love their daughters hate to see them get hurt. I know my heart breaks every time my little girl cries or is upset," he told her, going over to sit down next to Maya. "We know that they can do everything and anything, but sometimes, we just need to be reminded."
Reaching over, he placed his hand over hers. "You should talk to him. Tell him you're not ready to marry now," he said. "And when you are ready...we'll be glad to come back and give this blessing or whatever it is that we're supposed to give."
