The expedition gets a new member
"And make sure you get their attention right away and read off our list of grievances. If you don't, they'll try and walk all over you."
"Yes, Sir."
"Good," Woosley said as he stood from his chair and held his hand out. "You have sixty days to turn the Atlantis expedition around. Do a good job and you'll have your funding when you come home."
Maxine Pace looked down at Richard Woosley's hand. Deep down, she felt like she was selling her soul to the devil. But, from the reports the IOA had given her, she knew the expedition was in serious trouble. The leaders were allowing their members to do whatever they wanted and it had to stop.
"Thank you, Mr. Woosely," she said as she finally took his hand and shook it. "I won't let you or the IOA down."
"I hope not," Woosley said before he ushered toward the door of the room. "The Gate will be dialed soon. You mustn't keep them waiting."
With a small nod, Max picked up her shoulder bag and placed it on her shoulder. She walked out of the room and started down the corridors of the SGC. The closer she got to the control room, the harder her heart started to thud. She was about to go through a wormhole to another galaxy. Part of her was excited, while another part was afraid.
The IOA was entrusted her with turning the Atlantis expedition around and she didn't want to fail them. She had failed enough people in her lifetime, and didn't want to repeat the pattern. This was an awesome responsibility and she was determined to get things right this time.
"Doctor Pace," General Landry said when she walked into the control room. "I see you're ready to go to Atlantis."
"I am," Max said with a smile.
Landry looked at her for a moment before stepping closer. "I hope you know what you're getting yourself into," he said in a quiet voice. "I recommended you for the Midway Station project because you're one of the best and brightest I've ever seen but I'm not sure now."
Max stared up at Landry before nodding her head. She was grateful to Landry for bringing her in and was sure she could handle her new assignment. "I know, Hank," she said. "But the IOA needs a liaison to make sure the expedition is running smoothly."
"It is running smoothly. The IOA is just using you to get at Carter and Sheppard," Landry said. "Look, if going is so important to you, then let me talk to Carter. I'm sure there's room for you there."
Max held up her hand and shook her head. She had made her decision and had promised the IOA she would do this. Going back on her promise was not an option. "I'll be fine," she said.
"If you think so," Landry merely said before he walked out of the control room.
With a shake of her head, Max moved down to the Gate room. Once the event horizon appeared, she took a deep breath and walked through. It was the strangest thing she had ever experienced and she stumbled a bit when she came through the other side.
Blinking her eyes, Max looked around and marveled at the how beautiful Atlantis' Gate room was. She then looked in front of her to see a few people standing there. Remembering Woosley's words, she stepped forward and tucked her hands behind her back. She had to be tough or they would walk all over her.
"We need to have a meeting now. So however is in charge should probably call the senior staff in," Max said as she tried her hardest to look stern.
